We, the seniors of l94'7, are stepping out into a shaken and uncertain world. Certainly there has never been a time when a sound basic education has been more important in the training of young people for intelligent citizenship. Our years here at Ross were made full and meaningful by our teachers and advisors as they taught and led us in our studies and activities. We feel that they have made our preparation for the future a very satisfying and worthwhile accomplishment. Because of our association with them, and our fellow classmates, we are able to take our places in the world, prepared and unafraid. The choir made its first appearance in the Christmas assembly program. DRAMATICS I After an absence of five years, dra- matics again appeared on the Ross High curriculum, supervised by Miss Imogene Forsyth. The course was offered in two parts: junior dramatics the first semester and senior dramatics the second semester. The main project of the junior class was the selection of the class play, Ianuary Thaw. The classwork con- sisted of the study of pantomime, facial expressions, posture, diction, stage craft, and the various types of plays. During the first few weeks a one act play a Week was required to be read and reviewed. Scrapbooks were kept and handed in at the end of each six weeks. The last part of the course was devoted to the production of one act plays. Points were given drama students according to the number of lines spoken in plays. Those having enough points became members of the National Thespian Society. Row 3-David Schwartz, Gene Smith, Carol Hudson, llllargret Shellkopf, Ted Williamson, Dick Conley. The play revolves around the feud between the Gages, who bought an old farm in Connecticut and remodeled it, and the Rockwoods, who were thought to be dead, but re- turned to claim their house. The feud continues until a blizzard hits and the Gages plumbing freezes and their electricity goes out. This brings the two families together. The play was a great success with Dave Swartz playing Herbert Gage, Thelma Bates and Pat Hooks as Marge Gage, Molly Boyer and Pat Huntzinger as Mathilda Rockwood, and Iim Stoner and Ted Williamson as Ionathan Rockwood. They were ably supported by a large cast. A lot of credit is due, also, to the back stage crews who took charge of the staging and to Miss Imogene Forsyth and Mrs. Helen Schahet who directed the play. The staff has put forth its best efforts to draw a true picture of your old pals and teachers. Had it not been for Iack Huddle, editor-in-chief, assisted by the mem- bers of the staff, we doubt if it would have been a successful book. The weeks before the book went to press were hectic ones for the edi- tors, reporters, and other staff mem- bers, as they hurried to get in all the write-ups and pictures. These were tedious but wonderful mo- ments for all who worked on the year book. The one person who helped them through all their jobs, giving needed advice, was Mr. Vor- licky, the faculty advisor. Oh, and by the way, Dick Stotz was our photographer who sweated to make the students smile for the birdie. Jack Huddle, Nlr, Vorlicky, Sue Carroll. Row 3-Edith Hamblin, lVlr. The Chatter is out tcdayll were the familiar words that floated through Boss halls once every two weeks. 'Ihis year for the first time, the juniors and seniors on the staff, which was headed by Mar- cia Miller, assisted by Mary Frances Beeker, turned out six pages of the news and views of our dear old Alma Mater. Even most of the students didn't realize how much hard work the news-hounds do in gathering the material and composing the usual four-page paper. There were many times when our school paper put out outstanding editions, and two of those times were the eight-page Christmas edition, and the clever Charles Hutchings, Mr. Tooley, Marcia Miller April Fool issue, both of which will be long remembered by the staff and pupils, Three cheers go to Mr. Tooley, the competent faculty advisor, who did a wonderful job and saw to it that the kids got what they wanted. Throughout the basketball season fincluding the tourna- mentsh the Giants collected 740 points while their oppon- ents gathered only 646. The high point getter of the season was Dick Baron who amassed 180 points. Dick was unable to participate in the first six games because of a hand injury received during the football season. During the first six games in which Baron was unable to play, Bobo Weinhardt was high scorer however, he relinquished this position as soon as Baron started to play. Weinhardt scored 146 points to tie one of the two seniors on the squad, Dick Porczak. Porczak was voted captain of the squad by his team- mates. With only two of the eleven cagers leaving a mighty fine team is expected next year. Of the nine lettermen who return next year seven are juniors and two are sophomores. A very superior team is almost a certainty. Another familiar face that will be missed next year is that of Coach Eddie Gabel. After eight years of coach- ing at Fremont Ross, Coach Gabel accepted a position at Western Michigan State Teachers' College as trainer. Eddie will long be remembered as one of the favorite coaches at Ross High. Coach Eddne Gabel 5.4. , , 4 ' . 7 V Y 5,t.1's 5 If 1 vv , Q V 5 V. jf 2' f . Despite the the size of the crowd always be depended in winning the game. The cheerleaders the team the backing weather conditions or the cheerleaders can upon to do their part alone canot spur the team on to great victories but without them the effect of the cheers would be lost. They put all their feeling and pep into those cheers and take a real part in each victory we attain. Each year two new cheerleaders are chosen from the freshman class. When they become seniors they are head cheer- leaders and are awarded a letter for their three years of loyalty and effort. The veterans vied for honors in the following fields: pole vaulting, hurdles, high jump, broad jump, distance, dashes, discus and shot put. This was the last year for 10 of the 14 men as they were members of the Senior class. It was still too early to get any of the scores of the meets when the Croghan went to press but the 13 meet schedule was as follows: April 10 Inter-Class at Harmon Field. April 15 at Toledo Waite. Coach Iohn Tits- worth chose Bob Semer, Fred Stetzel, LaMar Hoffman, Dick Schell, Bernard Kellogg, lim Sevitts and Dick Shatfer to represent Ross in the out-of-town meets. All the men chosen were seniors and Coach Titsworth will have cr difficult task in shaping a new squad next year. The schedule and scores for the Harriers were as follows: Fremont Opponents September 24 16 Old Fort 39 October 3 32 Mansfield 23 October 15 32 Tol. Central 23 October 26 Placed fourth in the District Meet. Bob Semer was the only Harrier to qualify in the District and go to the State Meet. Since there are not very many participants in the Cross Country, it is not generally known that the team with the low score wins. S- TENNIS Participating in inter- scholastic tennis ior their third year the netters boasted a good record by winning the majority of their fourteen matches. Coached again this year by William I. McConnell, the netters were rated as one of the strongest teams in the district. The returning letter- men: Bob Bodenlos, Ted Hilty, Lloyd Bischoff, and Dick Baron, were the mainstays of the squad. Playing a two month schedule the Little Giant netters competed against seven teams on a home and home basis. The op- ponents ior the racquet wielders were Lima Cen- tral, Toledo DeVilbiss, Tc- ledo Scott, Toledo Mac- omber, Sandusky, Nor- walk and Bluffton. The netters also participated in the district and state tournaments. N, I Back Row-Henry Wood, Coach IVIcConneIl, Dick Baron. Front Row-Jim Jennings, Ted Hilty, Bob Bodenlos, Lloyd Bischoff 5 W .. -ff 'W s SWIMMING TEAM First official splash session for the Ross Mermen was held November ll, with six lettermen reporting to Coach George Gruse as the teams' backbone. The F men were as follows: Bruce Ransom and Bob Bodenlos, free stylersg Harry Strauch and lim Pence, breast strokersp Lee Koenig, backstroker, and Don Wen- singer, diver. The team made a spectacular showing, outstroking such teams as Massillon. Sandusky, Toledo DeVilbiss and Toledo Scott. Canton McKinley handed them their first defeat. The Mermen were victors in the district meet at Bowling Green. Bruce Ransom broke the 50 and 100 yard free style records in the Ross pool and took first and second places at the State Meet, March l. The Mermen con- cluded their successful l947 season by placing fourth at the State Meet in the Ohio State University pool. The departing seniors include Bruce Ransom, Lee Koenig, Bob Bodenlos and Ferry Anderson. The quartet constitutes quite a loss to the Mermen. Altogether Coach Gruse had thirty-four men to work with. Of the thirty-four swimmers only five were seniors, the majority being freshmen. This means we should have some very good squads in years to come. Bruce Ransom constituted the team's biggest loss this year. Ransom broke the 50 and 100 yard free style records in the Ross natatorium as well as some in the schools throughout northern Ohio. He was responsible for the high ratings the Mermen received during the swimming season. Bruce took a first and a second at the State Meet held in Columbus, March l. Fremont placed fourth and once again was recognized as one of the best swimming teams in the state. The Mermen made a spectacular showing outstroking such teams as Mas- sillon. Sandusky, Toledo DeVilbiss, and Toledo Scott. Canton McKinley handed them their first defeat. They also swam in the exhibitions given at Bowling Green University and Fenn College.
