The stern, black-suited disciplinarian of our parents memories is gone. In its place is the modern teacher—ready to laugh with the students, to discuss rather than lecture, to listen rather than demand, to strive for concepts, not memorized facts. Especially in our small school, the program of extra¬ curricular activities depends upon teachers willing to share their time with students. The rewards for teaching are intangible. A price cannot be put on the joy felt when a student grasps a difficult concept, and smiles with new self-assurance. Shared ideas, the excitement of the play’s opening night, or the understanding counsel given a troubled student cannot be measured. In dedicating the 1971 Bengal, the stu¬ dents of Rosman High are saying thank you to a person, who in the two short years she has been here, has enriched our lives. Thank you, MRS. KATHY STOCKLEN, for CARING. 2 isi l -.i ' 3 KATHY WILDE AND RONNIE JOE OWEN : .. .m Bm%m 4 ARE MISS AND MISTER ROSMAN HIGH CRISS GALLOWAY AND CINDY GILLESPIE CHARLENE McCALL AND FURMAN NICHOLSON RUNNERS-UP 5 6 THE YEAR 1 NINA McCALL — Captain NANCY WALDROP - Co-Captain CHEERLEADERS ARE TIGER CHEERLEADERS Beth Shepherd (Not Pictured) 8 WANDA HARTNUP GERENNA OWEN INA WALDROP ACTION FROM THE WORD GO BRENDA SNIPES SUZIE NICHOLSON PATRICIA McCALL HOPE RAXTER BETH SHEPHERD 9 1970 TIGERS ARE THE ASSISTANT Tiny Rollins, HEAD COACH Lee Powell, ASSISTANT Jimmy Howell. The money raised from this project was used to sponsor the annual Christmas Ball, the float which appeared in the Rosman Christmas Parade, and for improvements in the school. Other fund raising activities included the annual hippie day, and Sadie Hawkins Day, which replaced slave days this year. The Council was also responsible for the selection of the student of the month at each of the assemblies it sponsored. The winner is . . . Brilliant idea, Gary! STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS: Mary Helen Huggins, Secretary-Treasurer; Kathy Wilde, President; and William Cathey, Vice-President. 41 Should we cut his head off here? Ann, where’s your section? CAPTURING TODAY The best word to describe the 1971 BENGAL is change. Most significant was the selection of a new, more symbolic name. By a vote of the students, THE ORIOLE became THE BENGAL. The staff has also radically changed the usual “Features” and “Sports” Divisions, combining them in “The Year.” Finally, a three color cover enhances the beauty of this new book. In addition to the exacting work of preparing the annual, the staff has also sponsored several sock hops, and the MISS BENGAL PAGEANT. Marlene, is that the new Annual? How’s that candid, Margaret? Jesse, we can’t use THAT picture! FOR TOMORROW ,, 4 i Working? Them? 43 TIGER RAG STAFF THE VOICE OF THE STUDENT Dianne Owen draws the clever cartoons featured by the paper. The interests of Rosman’s students, determined by a survey, were the focus for changes made by the staff in the 1970-’71 issues of THE TIGER RAG. Reahzing that student interests often extend beyond the school, the staff pre¬ pared a special air pollution edition, and invited many speakers to the school. A talk on the dangers of smoking, on air pollution, and a visit by “Miss North Carolina” were three well-received assembly programs. Many ideas for pro¬ grams and speakers came from the stim¬ ulating press conferences the staff attended. A Eiterary Contest sponsored by the staff revealed a wealth of undiscovered talent. Winning student poems, short stories, and essays were featured in a popular special edition of the paper. Finally, the staff has entered two contests. If innovation in response to student interests is measured, we already have a winning paper. Linda Petit types copy under the watchful eye of Mr Howell. Cindi Gillespie has “printer’s ink” in her veins After hours of hard work, the staff staples THE TIGER RAG, and puts the latest issue “to bed.” 45 HONOR AND SERVICE BETA CLUB and MONOGRAM CLUB, whose members have achieved excellence in studies and athletics, share a second similarity — service to their school and community. One of BETA CLUB’S most successful projects was the night spent Christmas carolling in the community. The members visited the elderly and ill, bring¬ ing cheerful moments and fruit baskets. The Club also attended the District and State conventions, and sponsored an assembly. The members also enjoyed fre¬ quent social suppers, often held at the sponsor, Mrs. Cothran’s home. The MONOGRAM CLUB, sponsored by Mr. Powell, also had an exciting year. The “powder puff football games’’ and the Homecoming Dance were two fund-raising projects enjoyed by the students and com¬ munity. The profits helped purchase new uniforms for the Tigerettes. BETA CLUB stimulates intellectual achievement. Representative Charles Taylor discusses political issues with Beta members at a typical meeting. 46 BETA CLUB OFFICERS include: Mary Helen Huggins, Re¬ porter; Nancy Waldrop, Vice-President; Evelyn Beddingfield, President, and Cindy Gillespie, Secretary-Treasurer. Has the gym burned down? MQNOGRAM CLUB OFFICERS; Kathy Wilde, President; Nancy Waldrop, Secretary; William Cathey, Vice-President. Being a member of MONOGRAM CLUB means athletic excellence and dedication to improving the sports program through many projects. 47 FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA CLUBS GIVING AGLIMPSE One of this year’s most interesting meetings was a demonstration of Will the Freshmen survive FHA initiation week? styling by a leading professional stylist. FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA OF TOMORROW Two of the most active clubs at Rosman High are the FHA and the FFA. The FHA presented a fashion show, with students modeling their own creations. The mem¬ bers also attended the annual convention in Raleigh, and contributed to the Western Carolina Children’s Center. This has been a year of victories for the FFA. The TOOL IDENTIFICATION TEAM, led by Arthur Whitmire and includ¬ ing Steve McCall, Lawrence Owen, Alfred Owen, and Daniel Ramey, won the Dis¬ trict Contest. The Land judging Team, paced by highest scoring Joe Henderson, won the District Contest. Both teams, coached by Mr. Clinton Owen, will com¬ pete in the State Contests. Further vic¬ tories are anticipated in the Parliamentary Procedure and Live Stock Judging Compe¬ titions this spring. The FHA and FFA operate the con¬ cession stand at ball games, using the money earned for their projects. LAND JUDGING TEAM: Clinton Owen, Sponsor; Mike Owen, Roger Petit, Frank Summey, Joe Henderson, Lynn Bullock. 49 SERVING OTHERS WITH Learning by doing — Checking out books, preparing bulletin boards, and replacing books on their proper shelves are some of the duties of Library Assistants and the LIBRARY CLUB. Their duties may include typing tests, grading quizzes, or Whether they’re typing the daily menus or flying from class umpiring ball games - TEACHING ASSISTANTS are invalu- to class, OFFICE ASSISTANTS form our communications 50 network. OUR SKILLS “Learning by doing” is an apt descrip¬ tion of the activities of the clubs pictured on this page. The FUTURE TEACHERS, for example, have initiated a tutoring pro¬ gram aiding students in elementary school with learning problems. They also spon¬ sored Christmas and Easter parties for the Special Education students. Students planning business vocations receive valu¬ able experience working in the office, while I.C.T. students hold part-time jobs in the community. The LIBRARY ASSISTANTS and CLUB have delved into library science studies in their service, and have brought to their work insights gained in travels to the local libraries and college libraries. TEACHER’S ASSISTANTS, in handling time-consuming paperwork, have freed Rosman teachers for more creative use of time. Each student exemplifies the positive side of modern youth — a willing¬ ness to serve. The FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA plan activities giving them insight into their chosen profession. 51 The charms of music attracted a large group to the new FOLK SINGING CLUB. STUDENT INTEREST CHESS, WILDLIFE, and FOLKSINGING CLUBS center around the varied interests of our students. The sudden appearance of chess boards during study hall led Mr. Tinsley to form a club whose meetings are devoted to tournaments in this exacting game. The club is also to be commended for its generous contribution to the Western Carolina Children’s Center. The absence of a glee club this year prompted Mrs. Kathy Stocklon to sponsor a FOLKSINGING CLUB. Using the talents of our student body, the club presented a delightful Christmas Program, and a Spring Concert is planned. This year’s WILDLIFE meetings have included films on fishing, hunting, gun safety, and conservation. The members plan a trip to a bow and arrow demonstration, and will enjoy a fly tying demonstration by their sponsor, Mr. Dwight Howell. FOLK SINGING OFFICERS: Judy Morgan, President; Linda Petit, Vice-President; Janice Fisher, Secretary; Jean McNeely, Program Chairman; and Laurel McKinney, Historian. 52 All eyes are centered on matches of wit and skill as the CHESS CLUB meets. SPURS THE CREATION OF TWO NEW CLUBS Although not a new club, WILDLIFE CLUB attracts those with interest in Ininting, fishing, camping, and conservation of the forests and waters. 53 BUS DRIVERS SKILL AND RESPONSIBILITY COMBINED “Let’s take the side road to my house.’’ “I just hit what?’’ 54 FACULTY A MAN IN THE MIDDLE Mr. Alonzo Warren, Principal Even when bus reports are late, registers overdue, and the mimeograph machine obstinate, MRS. MARY JANE REESE, the school secretary, has a smile, and the personality that has won the admiration and love of the students and faculty of Rosman. A sudden hush falls over the classroom; furtive glances reveal Mr. Warren observing quietly at the door. A shriek, “I’m caught!” res ounds from the street. Another road-crosser meets his fate. “I refuse to give up my lunch period to attend a pep rally!” is the battlecry at faculty meeting. The team scores; the crowd roars. Stand¬ ing near the door is Mr. Warren, with one eye on the game, another on the crowd . . . These varied scenes reveal in part the many responsibilities of Rosman’s principal. His is not an easy job, and not always a popular one, for he must balance student desires with faculty objectives and parents’ demands. Even so, the office door is always open, and within sits a man who listens, and who cares, no matter how small our problem may be. Return to classes after a three minute break . . . 56 MRS.
