SOCIAL STUDIES The social studies include Civics, World History, American History, Geography, Economics, and Sociol- ogy. This covers the study of gov- ernment, and world problems of the past and present. MRS. THELMA BRYSON AND RAY SIMPSON, teachers in this depart- ment, strive to instill in the students an understanding of the physical and political world in which they live. They also help to make the student aware of his responsibilities and privileges as a citizen of his school, community, state, and nation. Mak- ing each student realize, his respon- sibility in maintaining world peace through the United Nations is one of the main objectives of the depart- ment. Frances Maggard and Jo Ann Carter study the globe with Mrs. Bryson. Discussion of Adventures in Outer Space led by Mrs. Bryson with students Terry Owen, Hilda Sue Thomas Barbara Ashe, Susan Breedlove, Paulette Hooper, Gloria Moody, and Michael Whitmire. »vkk; In American History really comes alive when Mr. Simp- son discusses it with his students. 10

ATHEMATICS Urs. Comnena Reid teaches first and second year Al- lebra and Plane Geometry. All students are interested |n learning how to use a slide rule. I ' ' M ; , ' Im Because Mathematics has such an important role in today ' s world, every effort is being made at Rosman to arrange the courses offered in this department to meet, as nearly as possible the learning needs of the students. Mathematics is at the center of the exciting devel- opments in science and the teachers in this department, MRS. COMNENA REID and MISS MARGARET BYRD strive to create and maintain, in each student, an in- terest in mathematics, in order that he will be pre- pared to take his place in the world of the future. Miss Margaret Byrd, a new addition to our school this year, teaches General Mathematics and Business Arith- metic. Margaret Winchester demonstrates a theorem in Plane Geometry to Bramley Fisher and Steve Rropelnicki,

HOME ECONOMICS H A three-year course in home-economics is offered WinRosmanHigh School. This course benefits the high % school girl because it includes these seven divisions: Child Development, Clothing, Family Economics, Home experiences are a valuable part of the home- economics course. Here Mrs. Vaniman is discussing different projects with a group of tenth grade students. Family Relations, Foods, Health, and Housing. The girls learn the tricks of the trade from Mrs. Dorothy Vaniman, home-economics teacher and FTA sponsor. Doris McKinney and Majorie Raines are preparing material for a dress while Margie Galloway is decor- ating a curtain. AGRICULTURE A four year course in Vocational Agriculture is of- : fered in our high school. The course is primarily de- , signed to give farm boys experience in the various j fields of agriculture such as crop production, beef I cattle, swine and dairy production as well as farm ■ and home improvement and self sufficient agriculture. ' B. E. Keisler, second from right, is giving instructions i to his Land Judging Team: Harry Powell, Wayne Mc- ; Call, Clinton Owen, and Bramley Fisher--This team ' won first place in the Pisgah Federation Contest. The boys engage in such competitive activities as judging dairy cattle, beef cattle, land, and seeds, as well as parliamentary procedure, public speaking, tool identification and the like. Farm mechanics and shop work also are basic parts of the agricultiual pro- gram. In shop work the boys make a variety of useful things. 11
