THE SILVERSTEEN GYMNASIUIVI The year T957 will long be remembered as the year of Rosman's new gymnasium. This modern gym, rec- ognized as one of the finest in the two Carolinas, was ready for occupancy at the beginning of the fall term of school. Dillard Construction Company of Sylva built this modern gym and total costs, including facilities were approximately ST20,000. McDonald and Daniels of Brevard were the architects. The building, constructed of brick and steel rigid frames to avoid center supports, contains 115,000 square feet. There are two practice courts and one standard size court in it. The gym also has locker rooms, rest rooms, storage rooms and an office. Among the unique features are folding bleachers to seat some 650 people. An impressive Dedicatory program was given on the night of January i7th. The opening prayer was by R. E. Moody. Mr. Silversteen, who contributed the land on which the gym is located and in whose honor the building was named, was the principal speaker. Superintendent Wayne Bradburn dedicated the build- ing to the health and welfare of the youth of Rosman. He presented a plaque to Principal E. F. Tilson and said the gym should be a stepping stone to a better life for the entire community. Eddie Varner, Chairman of the Board of Education and Rosman's Mayor, A. M. White, also spoke briefly. Climaxing the program was a brief but impressive talk by J. B. Jones, former superintendent of schools. He paid tribute to those persons who were responsible for the building and predicted even greater progress at Rosman. The program was concluded with the singing of the Alma Mater by the Glee Club under the direction of Mrs. J. M. Winget.
