The class of 1973 of the Roslindale High School is the recipient of com- mendation, congratulations, and our warmest best wishes. You have worked and cooperated to implement the philosophy, policies and practices of our Roslindale High Schoolg and you have accepted the responsi- bilities and sacrifices involved. We are proud of your achievementsg and we have been inspired and guided by the sensitivity and high idealism you have shown in our hours of mutual sorrow. May the members of the Class of 1973 have the strength, the perseverance, and the ability to give abundantly of their youth, their services, their potentialities, in the militant struggle against intolerance and evil, and to render reciprocal service to family, community, and country. In the words of John W. Gardner, We have in the tradition of this nation a well-tested framework of values: justice, liberty, equality of opportunity, the worth and dignity of the individual, brotherhood, individual responsibility. These are all supremely compatible with social renewal. Our problem is not to find better val- ues but to be faithful to those we profess. With every good wish for the future, Helen M. I President: The job of our President, Frank Scarpaci, was truly difficult and time con- suming. Frank's duties included presiding over the Senior Advisory Council and being responsible for the organization of all senior activities. Frank was the official spokesman for our class. Vice-Presiderz1.' Anna Benenato was our very spirited V.P. She assisted Frank in all our Senior Class activities. Annafs major responsibility was for the organization of Class Day. , Secrelarv: Our most efficient Secretary was Gale Attaya. Gale was kept quite busy recording the minutes of all Senior Advisory Council meetings and publishing the class newsletters. She was responsible for all Senior Class correspondence. Treasurer: Trustworthy is the word to describe our Treasurer, Nadija Kawczak. She was the keeper of our class funds, and of records of all income. Nadija authorized all expenditures for class activities. Thank you, Frank, Anna, Gale, and Nadija, for an excellent job, and for helping to make our Senior Year a successful and memorable one. , 1 A 20, A LINDA L. We cried in the wind, The tears iced on each cheekg We know it was fate, But the memories are so bleak. You know as well as I What happened that year, Oh, why did they die? Our eyes still do tear. The snows of the winter Could not ice up our minds, As we remember the three Memories locked in our minds 3521 KAREN F. FLANNERY For Tony, October, For Karen, November. The winter got colder, It was Mark in December. Our memories together Are now just a thought. Oh, why did it happen? Oh, why were they sought? I-Iamrock, Advisory Su- san Foynes, Carole Lieber, Joanne Newmark, Mary Jane Platek, Editorsg Russell Teebagy, Photographer. To put a yearbook together with only 112 pages while trying to satisfy all the seniors and while trying to make our yearbook unique was our motive. We feel that our countless hours of toil and aggravation have made our yearbook a success. We hope that you feel the same way. L r . HQ X i ,iv EEST Q 0 XB U W1 LITTLE QTY HA FLEXIBLE CAMPUS Flexible Campus Program is a descriptive name given to the on and off campus programs started this past September. Under the flexible pro- gram, students are able to use the educational, medical, business, govern- mental and social sources in the community during school time. This year, students served as tutors in local Elementary and Junior High Schools, at- tended Health Career classes at the Occupational Resource Center, took college courses at Suffolk University, taught swimming at the West Rox- bury Y.M.C.A., and interned at the Little City Hall in West Roxbury. Mini-courses and last period study periods were some of the on-campus selections. Besides providing worth-while on handi' experience in career areas, the program created a feeling of responsibility and maturity among students. 82 Over the Years When we came to R.H.S., we were on our own. Unlike the sheltered life of Junior High, we were at last given some responsibility. The proper dress code was abolished, which left us to usecour own judgement. About this time, the surrounding schools conducted what is fondly remem- bered as the BOSTON STUDENT STRIKE. Even though Rossie didn't actively participate, we were all se- cretly hoping that some changes would be made. Well, we finally got our wish granted when a three man crew, armed with brushes and rollers, came, and R.H.S. was painted. Our efforts to bring about changes that year were ham- pered when German Measles swept the school. Yes, for at least a month during that year, each new day found a line of spotted victims awaiting their turn to visit the nurse. Who said the German Measles is only for little kids?? Well, you know that Rossie always recovers, and as far as sports are it concerned, the football team finished sec- ond in the District. Our athletes were honored at the first annual Sports Night where the guests were addressed by Bruins star, Rick Smith. 1970 was the year Ted Kennedy came to Rossie and spoke to us about our rights. A real, live government offi- cial . . . we are almost adults!!! The year ended on a slightly sad note when our Head Master, William Cunningham, retired. By the end of the school year, we were all wondering who would take his place. A woman?'? No!! Yes!! When September of '71 rolled around, we were more than anxious to see, not only our old friends, but also our new principal. We were at first a little leery, but after speaking with Miss Moran and getting to know her ideas on how a high school should be run, we knew that we were pretty lucky. If they said to us A woman princi- pal? , the reply was always You bet!!' . . . With our new principal, Roslindale High got a few new things. Some of our concerned teachers began mini- courses. A few juniors were allowed to leave early one day a week to teach in neighboring elementary schools. Overall, sports were something to be really proud of. Our hockey team was undefeated and this would be the third year that the track team was number ONE !!! In football, 1971 was the year of the first annual Thanksgiv- ing Day Game. Well, we're still trying . . . When June rolled around, we were anxious for our sum- mer vacation. Next September we'd finally be seniors !!! In the fall of 1972, we returned to school with high hopes of making this a very special and memorable year. We were seniors at last. Most of us, because of over- crowding, now had our first class at 7:48 A.M. Almost every senior found himself in a Flexible Campus Pro- gram, and either left R.H.S. to go to work or took extra courses at a local college. As our senior year went on, we were saddened by trag- edy. Two different auto accidents resulted in loss of three R.H.S. students. Again. we. the seniors, banded together to form the Trophy Fund, which would honor the most outstanding sportsman at Rossie by presenting him with an award in memory of his deceased classmates. With winter coming, seniors were busy making plans for their WINTER CARNIVAL. Even though the Lon- don Flu found each of us at one time or another, we did our best and the CARNIVAL was an overwhelming success. By the end of February, we were all touched by a slight case of Senioritis. Each day would bring another letter of acceptance and the excitement of telling every- one, especially those who told us that our College Board scores were so bad that we wouldn't even be accepted in Romper Room, was tremendous. Well, we showed them Now comes the time to start fitting for Caps and Gowns. All of us are looking forward to June, when we walk across the stage, receive our diplomas, trip, and re- turn to our seats . . . THE CLASS OF 1973 FINALLY GRADUATES . .. Mary P. Each girl is putting forth her effort and always with the ideals of sportsmanship. The junior varsity is our valuable training ground for the developing of team work and confidence. Basic skills are drilled on in practice. Our teams have additional direction from our co-captains, Laurette Carter and Deborah Spence. uw' , GIRLS' BADMINTON To open the Fall sports season, Badminton is offered. Students select their own partners for the weekly double matches. These matches are in preparation for the City Tournament held at Girls' Latin School. Roslindale High School was represented by Laurette Carter and Deborah Spence. Our second doubles team was .lean Wong and Fran Doocey. The girls are also trained in scoring and officiating their own matches. Our team did very well, placing second to Girls' Latin School and soundly defeating all competition. In doing so, we set a new tourna- ment record for high scoring . . . over 100 points for the tourna- ment. In the spring, we will en- ter the state championships held at Brockton High School. Lp GIRLS' TRACK A new addition to our Girls' Sports program is Fall and Spring Track and Field. Track meets are held in the fall and spring at White Stadium. The Track program has been ex- panded to include a variety of Field Events and Cross-Country. Our girls did very well in these new areas of competition. It is hoped that in the future each school will have their own teams competing on a weekly schedule. Look out, Olympians!!! Cheerleaders Co-captains: Gale Attaya. Cathy Smith CHEERLEADERS The Roslindale Cheerleaders are an ex- ceptional group of girls, whose dedica- tion and practice are well known. In the spring. many girls tryout for the presti- gious positions on our squad. With prac- tice held all summer long, the squad is ready for the opening football season. They cheer with such spirit and gusto that all their cheers, chants and songs echo throughout the stadium. Their glow of enthusiasm brightens the play on the field. A recent addition to our squad is our TIGER, who's great. After the close of the football season, our squad moves in-doors to prepare for state-wide com- petition. Sandwiched into their busy schedule is a very special assignment coaching the girls at the Horace Mann, a true learning experience for all the girls involved.
