The Open Book stands for the knowledge we have gained in our years of formal instruction. It also represents the constant thirst for knowledge, the driving force each of us has instilled within him to better himself, no matter what life may have in store for him. The Lamp represents the enlightenment that comes from knowledge. Each ad- vance in learning increases our ability to comprehend the nature of our environment and the meaning of life itself. May this year book be a pleasant memento of the highlights in our pursuit of knowledge and of the lighter moments of our companionship in Roslindale High School. John Courtney Editor-in-Chief 1 .1 4 CSL I LINC f . x NDALE HIGH SCHOCL POPLAR STREET ROSLINDALE, MASS. CLASS oF 1958 THOMAS F. GATELY fo The twenty-one years I spent in Roslindale High School bring to me many memo- ries of wonderful predecessors, outstanding teachers, and marvelous pupils, all of whom contributed so greatly in fashioning a community high school second to none in this fine city of ours. No school can be great in the eyes of the people unless it is staffed by a highly devoted and intelligent faculty. No school can attain a high degree of merit unless it has a loyal, earnest, and right-minded student body. Both of these groups have always been a part of Roslindale High School. Two such groups require but one simple force to weld them into a composite body which assures success in the common aim of both, namely a well-disciplined and highly regarded institution of learning. This force was furnished in the first Head Master, Mr. Ambrose B. Warren, who so wisely and learnedly prepared the foundations of Roslindale High School. It was a simple task for Mr. Gerald Coughlin, his successor, and for me to follow his leadership and guidance and, by working together with gifted teachers and fine pupils, to maintain the fair name of Roslindale High School which Mr. Warren established. Roslindale High School is an excellent secondary school. The accomplishments of its graduates are the solid proof of that simple statement. I pray that each of you in the Class of 1958 and every member of each succeeding graduating class of Roslindale High School will assist not only in maintaining its fine record but also in increasing its standing and prestige. Farewell, and may God shower His choicest blessings on each of you, the members of the Class of 1958. 4 DR WILFRED L. O'LEARY its Your graduation from high school means that you have grown up, and that from now on you must make your own evaluation and decisions. Your parents have done all within their power to ensure your goal. Your teachers have, by example and instruction, prepared you for your chosen career. You have been the beneficiaries of an excellent moral training, whose principles have been a part of your curriculum since the day you entered the first grade. You have learned much, and you have acquired skills which will continue to serve you. You have been privileged to grow up in a truly democratic society in which the only aristocracy is the aristocracy of the intellect. You have learned to meet, to appreciate, and to understand all types of people and by so doing have gained social competence. For some of you, graduation from Roslindale High School is the completion of your formal education, for others, it is the beginning of more formal education in the college or school of your choice. Graduation, too, is the time for you to pause to thank all those who have helped you so much-your parents, your teachers, and the people of Boston, who have provided the splendid education for you. To them you owe much, you can never repay the debt. However, by being the good citizen and community leader you can fulfill their earnest hopes and prayers. Ever keep in mind the words of Micah, He has shewed thee, 0 man, what is good, and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God. May good health and success attend you all the days of your life is the farewell to you from your Head Master. 5 ,J ' Y Q 'iq 1'4- '--Ano 'nl' Robert J. Bent Catherine F. These students are class officers, club presidents,-sport captains, and editors of publications, to name a few of the sources of the boys and girls of the week. Accompanying the senior of the week are what are known as Student Clippingsf' These are the happenings of the school in general or of our students in particular. The Roslyn Chapter of the National Honor Society was founded in our school in 194-7. Its purpose is to give recognition to those students who meet high standards of scholarship, character, service, and leadership. Members of the senior and junior classes are elected annually by a Faculty Council. During its twelve years the Chapter has endeavored to serve the school and community, it has contributed to many charities interna- tional in scope, and awards each year a S100 scholarship to one of its members. Most of the members go on to higher education and have brought honor to the Chapter by achieving distinction in their chosen fields. 51 EY, QQNLHR05g kv. i ' I NWN.. Row 3: J. Brown, J. 0'Neil, J. JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT fi If? sw 5 .1 xg wud:-1 l'l,c-ary, June Vrasco lpresident of a J.A. companyj, Claire Belmonte Csecretary of J.A.B.A.D 54 The Spanish Club is one of the largest and most active clubs in Roslindale High School. At each of the seasonal meetings, the members have an opportunity to put what they have learned about the Spanish language to a practical and purposeful use. At our first meeting, the officers for the year 1957-58 were elected by ballot and they began immediately to plan the Christmas meeting of the club. Little dramas were written, planned, and rehearsed by several mem- bers of the club. At each meeting thereafter, the dramas and activities were centered around the season during which the meeting was held. By listening to Spanish recordings of both voice and instrumental pieces, the club members became ac- quainted with the Spanish music, culture, and the Spanish atmosphere in general. Through conversing in the friendly, informal, club atmosphere, many students lost previous classroom inhibitions and began to take a new found interest in the Spanish language. Our faculty advisor was Miss Gertrude Whelan. SPANISH CLUB Raw 14: J. Holland, L. Appleton, M. Gean, T. Donohue, M. Keefe, D. Brandli, L. Anderson, S. Starkweather, H. DiVito, J. Tuttle, F. This is easily achieved because the greater number of the members are of Italian origin, and naturally they are very much interested in the language and customs of their ancestors. At the monthly meetings a delightful atmosphere prevails, as the members' chief concern is enjoyment. Excellent Italian music is supplied at these meetings, and delicious refreshments are served. Each year they set aside part of their dues for something more lofty than refresh- ments. They send a small check to the Home for Italian children. It is gratifying to think that someone less fortunate may be a little happier. 57 DEBATING CLUB in Row 3: B. Reid, J. Ridlon, V. Psharra, J. Mooers, S. Mooney, J. O'Neil, M. Pearson, M. Durning, R. Cooper. Row 52: R. Fulton, J. Madden, J. Crasco, A. King, E. Saliba, R. Gaughran Cpresidentl, S. Skinner, M. Fodale, G. Dow, L. Jamison, J. Mooney. Row I: G. Thompson, J. Bartlett tvice-presideutj, J. Caro, J. Conley, C. Souearas Csecretaryl, M. Donaghue, M. Finneran, E. Edlund, B. Moye. The Debating Club has been a part of Roslindale High School since the earliest days of the school. A student is always improved by his membership in this club, for the club develops not only poise and ability to speak in public but also self- confidence and reliance. The experience of doing research on a particular subject, organizing information to prove an argument effectively. and presenting the result to a listening audience in a convincing manner is invaluable. A most important part of the Debating Club is its gavel, made by a grateful parent of a former Debating Club member from a section of Old Ironsidesn which was replaced during the ship's repair. This parent was so appreciative of all the club had done for his son that he presented this gavel, which has been an inseparable part of the club ever since, and a reminder of the American heritage of freedom which is the club's ideal. 58 ART CLUB I i 1 1 I I ! 1 1 E FQ 5. g! il An ,I .i 'I 11 l A1 I 1 Q l 'I 11 1 Row 3: A.
