Through its five courses it has prepared ten classes of girls and boys to take part in the life of the community during the most critical years of our country's existence -years that have brought us depression, war, and, in our time, peace. Our school has done its task well. VVe, the Vlass of 194-6, have enjoyed its benefits, have shared in the crystallization of some of its traditions, and have founded still others. In our school's deccnnial year we offer our Yearbook as the record of the achievements of Roslindale High School and of our own small contribution to them, as proof of the school's service to Roslindale and to lVest Roxbury. THE YEARBCDO 301' 7946 ,fl Smiar Publimfian TENTH ANIVERSARY J-Wh Schoal Kasliudala Mass MR. AMBROSE B. WARREN flaw! ,Master Um' Head Ma fer is' Mas' age In extending my congratulations to you, the class of nineteen forty-six, I wish to compliment you on the timely theme which you have chosen for your Year- book, and on the excellent way in which you have developed it. Your high school days have been spent in a period which will never be omitted from the history books which future generations will study. Its importance and signqicance are tremendous and beyond our ability to predict, but we cannot but feel that the thousands of boys and girls throughout the land who are assuming the responsibilities of citizenship will apply sober and serious thought to the problems which face them in the administration of civic affairs, elocal, state, and national. This year is your school's decennial, and that means more in your case than you might at first suspect. It means that your school was practically one hun- dred per cent engaged in the war effort. Every young man graduate was of an age to make him eligible for service in the armed forcesg many of the young women graduates were engaged in some kind of service which contributed to the war effort, and those of you who were in school during the war years made your contributions through service in the junior Red Cross, as helpers in the rationing program, as workers in place of men who had gone to war, and in purchasing stamps and bondsg practically everyone, graduate and student, was doing his part. So, as you finish your studies in high school, you may justly feel proud that you had a part in the history of Roslindale High School's first ten years, and that your three years, coming at the end of the decade, were characterized by service for your country in its struggle to maintain and preserve Freedom, Liberty, and justice. Your Head Master hopes that individually and collectively you will continue to find pleasure and satisfaction in so conducting your activities that you can justly claim that your service has been a worthy contribution to the progress of civilization and to the establishment of peace and good will among all mankind. The young people of the Class of 194-6 are not the only ones who are graduating from Roslindale High School this June. XYith them there goes a man who has seen much of the world which his young companions enter so eagerly. Yet he belongs among them: if we look at him we can not help but see in his eyes the twinkle that will ever be youthful. After long and faithful service, Mr. Francis J. Vonlin is leaving the classrooms which have been such an im- portant and absorbing part of his life. No matter how large or how numerous its classes may be in the fu- ture, our school will seem a little lonely without him who has served it so well. During the years that we have known Mr. Cfonlin we have become devoted to him with an affection which springs from admiration, respect, and gratitude. NYe admire him because he is a gentleman in the purest sense of the word. In this patient and understanding man we have seen a teacher who was doing his utmost to aid us. English is perhaps the most difficult subject in which to interest the average student, but few indeed were the pupils who did not look forward to an English class with Mr. Conlin, whose wit and sagacity made each period too short. NYe respect him because he undertook each task with the same energy that was evident in his every action. Almost single-handed he has turned out edition after edition of the Taftlerg he can be proud of his work which has always been entirely for our benefit. We are grateful to him because he has enriched our lives by his very presence. Any of us who have had the privilege of daily association, even for only one year, with this jovial and kindly man could not help but absorb some fraction of the fine qualities which have earned him our undying love. We shall miss Mr. Fonlin. We hope that he will miss us, but, even more than that, 'we hope that his influence will stay with us to guide us in our association with everyone who, in the future, will cross our paths. MR. FRANCIS J. CONLIN 41 LI LTY During the years 1 9 3 6- 1 9 4 6 we and our predecessors have known that, regard- less of the difficulties we were to encounter, we were assured at all times of the Hrm, guiding hands, and of the friendly, encouraging advice of our Headmaster and of our Faculty. We knew that theirs was an inspiring example for us to emulate, and that the road ahead would be all the clearer and easier because of their tireless efforts in our interest. Most of all, we have felt that our only suitable remuneration to them will be our untiring maintenance of the splendid traditions of the school-traditions for the establishment of which our Head Master and our Faculty have done so much. As a group the faculty registered 2,591 men for Selective Service, took and gave First Aid and Air Raid Pre- caution courses, and issued 18,800 ration books. As individuals they served as members of the Aircraft Warning Services, members and chairmen of OPA price panels, victory gardeners, directors of War Loan Drives, organizers of community recreation, USO, and Red Cross units, secretaries and workers in war plants and federal bureaus, members of the Coast Guard CTD, and Nurse's Aids, Gray Ladies, and Dietitians in civilian and veterans' hospitals. Many were blood donors. Girls and boys in the school subscribed 827,693.13 in War Bonds and Stamps, and worked as clerks at the local rationing board. Each war year forty-nine per cent of the pupils worked part-time in offices, factories, and stores. Girls made 12,575 surgical dressings, and a group of second-year girls issued by mail 14-1,800 copies of War Book III. Many boys and girls did Red Cross work, served at USO canteens, at Air Raid Warning Centers, and at hospitals. We are proud of all this, but we can find no words to express our admiration and respect for our brothers, our sisters, our cousins, and our friends who, educated as We have been at Roslindale High School, offered their lives in the service of their country. VVith this in mind, we have organized our extra- curricular activities so that every pupil has the opportunity for safe and beneficial expression of his individual ideas and of his special talents. We have emphasized the lasting rather than the temporal gains, and we have conducted the ac- tivities maturely and in a spirit of friendly in- formality. But never have we forgotten our loftier purpose, and in so doing we have many times experienced the unique satisfaction of having completed successfully tasks which we had undertaken of our own free will and in addition to our regular school duties. Yauliael Tattler Representatives Nluch credit should be given to our Tattler representatives, directed by Miss Burke, who have conscientiously and steadfastly given a great deal of their time and energy to the Taftler. Their job consists of getting one hundred per cent subscriptions to the Tulfler from the pupils in each home room. This can be done only through the cooperation, which is nearly always easily gained, of all students. If the need does arise, however, for just a little bit of bribing or threat- ening, it is always done with the best intentions and with good results. Then follows the process of much tearing out of hair, struggling to make the accounts balance, and staying on friendly terms with robbed classmates. The Tatiler representative, apparently non- chalant, finally reaches the goal of one hundred per cent subscrip- tions. But that is not all'-three times a year the representative distributes to his constituents the finished issue of the Taltler. i21I Xim- st-niors, om- rc'pI'vs0lltillg 1-:1c'h Sl'lliUI' homvroom, wt rt - w 4-loc-tml In hm-pta-lllhvr to sc-rvv with our f'l:1ssoftic't'rs:fit-orgt' lioluirvzm, IH'l'Silll'Ilt1JUllll O't'onm-ll, vim- prt-sith-l1tgAl1l1v NIc'f':xrthy, tra-usu .mel ltuth Johnson, soc-rot-:rv NT as an Vounc-il to dirt-vt the zuftivitics our sm-nior ycur. Sullivan Dramatic Club The Dramatic Vluh, under the direction of Nliss Mary Reid, was a new addition to the Roslindale High School roster of cluhs this year. Since the deactivation of the Pl21yIll2lk0I'S at the beginning of the war, there had been no dramatic cluh, until a group of students interested in the stage and the theatre asked to have a cluh started this year. The activities have heen carried on in a spirit of inforniality and were intended mainly for the henetit of the inein- hers themselves. Highlighting the first half of the year was the highly successful Vhristinas party, which featured an original play hy Francis Xee. Later two one-act plays were cast., one a comedy of high school life and the other the well-known melodrama, Tha .lIonl.'z'y'.s- Pun: Taking part in the former were Phyllis Bader, Janice Lunney, Dominic Bright, Patricia Wilkey, John Marshall, Lois Jenkins, and Leonard Voppenrath. The inenihers of the cast of The ,TIUlllt'6'.Iji.S' Pau' were Francis Nec, David Tucker, Dorothy Pugatch, Leo Khari- hian, and Kevin NValshe. The club looks forward to a year of greater and more amhitious activity in 194-7. 1l25 t llnslilululv lligll 5c'luml's flirls' film- filllll, 1'mnpi'isc-4l ol' OIIQCI' vrwznlisls llIlllC'l'lll1' zllmlt' flil'vc-limi mul r'l'ili1'z1l vyv ul' Nlr. lfznnig- In-ttl, luis prnvnlwl un ulnimlunm- nl lull-nl :mil llll'lUlllfIIlS lmr'xnun.x' lm' lllllll-V 2ISSl'lIllllll'S. lllllNl2lllIllllg Zllllflllg film-1' 1 lull me-mln-rs was il gil't1-il lriu lllilfll' l1poftlnl'4'c- IlllllSll2ll S1'lIlUI'S'l,fll'Hlll.X' l,ll'2llll2lll, Luis , , . , . 4-lislulsmn, :mel Nlurum Nlzwk who worm' lll'ill'Il Hll lll2Ill,X' l'rul:n,v morn- llllis in svluml :incl llll1'l' nn tlw rzuliu fm' ilu' Hllfmlllll l'ulmlir- Sf-lmfll l v llulIl'. 1 - 1 1 .Xt tlu- 1 lll'lSllll2lN .Xsscmlilv tllr- film- 4 lull pn-sm-nim-fl lllrm- i lIJIH'UIll'l1lll'l'0lllllUSlllUlISIHfl0Sll llnlnliilmf' lQlm'i:nii1 lixc-vlsis Ili-fl, mil 'IKM' Nlui'iu. The ahility of its members, comhined with the variety of instruments played, contributes to the popularity of the orchestra. This year, under the direction of Mr. Trongone assisted hy Miss Reid, the orchestra played for the annual district meeting of the Home and School Association. It also performed at school asseinhlies, including the fl0lllIlllJllS Day and Vhristmas assemblies. Early in the year preparations were started for the orchestras part in the graduation exercises. The rehearsals twice a week are continually increasing our ability as well as our repertoire, and enable us to perform at very short notice. Membership in the orchestra does not consist completely of work. It is a source of relaxation and enjoyment for its music- loving IIll'lllll0I'S. Seniors make up the larger part of the band and therefore hold most of the commissions and ratings. Several boys from the organization displayed their talents by playing Christmas Varols in Roslindale Square. The entire Band had its first chance to show its ability when it was called on to perform before the Home and School Association on the night of January 16, 1946. Mr. Latham, who conducted the band on that night, received many compliments from both parents and teachers. The band has always finished very near the top in the annual Schoolboy Parade and did very well this year under the helpful direction of Mr. Sordillo, Mr. Latham, Mr. Gardner and Nlr. Gabele. The officers were: Vaptain Henry Kelley, First Lieutenant James Gallo, First Lieutenant John Marshall, Second Lieutenant Paul Parker, Second Lieutenant John Caulfield, Second Lieutenant George Boudreau, Second Lieutenant William Gruseck. i29l Band .Xs llum- unrullv ya-t timifl suplunnmx-s lmirvluul illlo ilu :wluml gym: in S4-pta-mlu-r nf 194-fi, SllUXYl'l'l'll by ilu- c-olnrful zulvc-rs? 4-ritic-ism uff':1pl:1lll Burkc' mul c-mnpzmy office-rs, little flifl Hwy think llml smlu' 1l:1y llu-5' wmllal lu- lmrril'ying otlu-rs in tlu' Silllll' mumu-r r x - - . llmt IS just tlu- misc, lurwcvor, lor now that group has lK'l'0llll' ilu sc-nim'm'la1ss. lllilllj' :mx 1-mmllissimuwl ollic-vrs wllilv utlu-rs luplcl high num-cornmissimu-fl grzulc-s. l,lC'llll'4'Il lu-low are flu' cmmuissimu-fl uflim-rs ul' flu- I'I'g'l nu-nt who lmvc- :ulvzuu-ml from rank to rank tllrflllgll thru- ,vvurs alul arm- now CUIIIIJZIIIX Cmnnunulc'rs or slllmlwlilmtm-s. Constantly keeping in mind the excellent mental and physical training we could derive from participation in athletics, we en- couraged every girl and boy to engage in some sport. We set as our objective not merely the creation of championship teams but teams which would bring credit to our school by instilling in each player the qualities of good sportsmanship. These qualities, we are sure, will be of incalcul- able value not only to the players themselves but to the community which we all hope so much to serve. Bowling The Aches and Pains Club, under the direction of Miss Sullivan and Miss Kelley, the two expert bowlers, has for its aim the building of bigger and better muscles. This aim is achieved during our weekly excursions to the Park Street Bowling Alleys. In order to arrive at this Amazon factory, each member of the elub madly dashes out from school and across the square to catch that elusive 2:47 street ear. When the girls reach their destination, they immedi- ately quiet down and work out a rotation system in order to give every- one a chance to knock down the stubborn pins. The sophomores of this elub made their debut on January 14, 1946, and the juniors and seniors appeared on January 17. Later these groups were combined, and bowled one afternoon each week. The enthusiasm of everyone steadily increased the membership to about one hundred girls. Teams were formed and a H90 C'lub was chartered for those who achieved a score of 90 or more. Fun, no end, was the reward for those who participated in this year's Bowling Club. Members of the Bowling Vlub were Janice Bohan, Helen Brine, Joan Vogliano, Vorrine Fiore, Norma Fralli, Marlen Gillis, Frances Gourley, Varol Havey, Phyllis Hersee, Marie Hynes, Flaire Jacobsen, Ruth Johnson, Helen Kennedy, Bloniea Kearney, Mary Kyne, Dorothy Lenihan, Anne Mahoney, Patricia Maynard. Mary llcllonough, Marilyn Meyer, Louise Morrissey, Mildred 0'Leary, Patricia Scanlan, Barbara Thompson. Club Jl36i Riding Club The courageous girls who comprise the Riding f'lub met weekly during the spring and fall at the lYeld Stock Riding C'lub in West Roxbury. The first week all hopeful beginners learned how to show the horse they were not afraid, a lesson which is by far the hard- est. The second week was really confusing because each one had to learn that it is imperative not to mount on the right side of the horse. CAnd just because the instructor says, Now get up on the right side, girls, is not an excuse, because one should have known the right side meant the left sidelj After this it's every girl for herself-and her horse. Under the skillful direction of President and instructor, Pat Flynn, it wasn't long before all were getting more than aches and pains for such trouble. It was a thrill to dash under low-hanging branches and around corners. It was easy to imagine one's self a Pony Express Rider, another Famous Heroine, or even the Lone Ranger. No other club can offer this opportunity! Blembers of the club were Patricia Flynn, president, Patricia Holleran, secretary, Carol Havey, Jean Welch, Alice Bowler, Norma Lane, Virginia Niven, Eleanor McClintock, Anne Kerrigan, Janet VVeeber. i37l ln thc- past yr-:ir wc- rliscovc-rml that golf was not only :1 fzlvoritc of lioys, lint tlmt girls also 1-njoyc-rl it, for Czwli 'llllvsiluy in tlw fzmll anal spring thc' Clnli journvyt-el to tlw tic-orgc lYrigllt Golf Voursc for :1 strc-nuous aftcrnoon ol' instruc tion. l,0IHllllllIll wrist nuovcincnt for putting was tlw first lcsson -rlvfinitm-ly thc- lmralx-st. 4Xl'tm-i'wuI'cls tlw llIl'lll0ll of rllipping, making :upprozwli sllots, :intl driving SK't'Ill01l f'UlllIl3lI'2ll'lly misy-to tlw incin- lwrs. l'4-rlmps tlw pro haul an more fliflivnlt tlllllk for all thc girls worc- lwginncrs Xm- orrlingly tlw first liull liour or so tha-y spvnt in inastvr- ing tht- lnmlaiinc-ntul positions :incl grips. .Xftcr tlu- wee-kly routine tlwy slznywl until 4lz1I'ktop1':1r'tic-c tlu- various shots. Mr.0'Brien was the coach, and it is due to his persuasive influence that so many boys became interested in golfing. Two nights a week the boys journeyed to George Wright Municipal Golf Course. One afternoon was devoted to practice under the direction of the club professional. Un the other afternoon, the fellows tried to see who could get the lowest score in their eighteen-hole matches. Members of the golf team are Eugene Vatino, Vharles Steeger, Harvey Forbo, llohert NfacEwen, James Kirkland, Leonard Kane, Leo Kharihian, Horace Dacko, Frank Murphy, J. Boys' Tennis 'l40l Girls' Tennis The Tennis f'lub of Hoslindale High opened the season of 194-5-4-6 under an entirely new system. By a method of tournaments each girl played all the other members in the club. There were a great many new members and these girls received special attention from our potential Alice Marbles. All the girls worked diligently to ini- prove their games and on any Tuesday afternoon cries of Love and Deuce could be heard from the courts at Billings Field. The fact should be appreciated that outdoor activity and participation in all types of games breed good sportsmanshipg so if any one has been knocked down in the corridor by a female whirlwind running along with a blithe expression on her face, he can be assured he has been a victim of a member of the Tennis C'lub. Reynolds took over the helm, and snecess- fully guided our hockey team to a very impressive reeord. After losing a heart-breaker to Jamaica Plain, the hoys swept through the rest of the season with six straight victories. It seems ironic that the Roslindale Sextet lost the hest game they played all year to a team they had previously defeated. The season's close found Roslindale deadloeked with East Boston for the District title. In the play-off, it took Eastie a fnll three periods and all hut six seconds of a sudden-death overtime period to cke out a four to three win over a stuhhorn and aggressive Roslindale foe. Much credit is dne our first line of George Bondrean, Boll MacEwen, and Dick Healy. Vharlie Steeger and Doc Festa played a rugged game at defense, while Don Sellers was superh at guarding the nets. Other boys who contributed greatly to tl1e team's success were Paul Brady, Bob Pero, Harvey Vorho, Joe Kelleher and Al Reddy. To the boys and girls who graduated from secondary schools in America during the last four years, the outlook from this summit was dark indeed with the tragic hopelessness of war. But today, we of the f'lass of 1946 see in the distance the light of peace-a peace that we must do what we can to secure. lteal peace is not yet ours: although the war is over, there are rumors of warg there still exist much of the bitter- ness, many of the inequalities, and many of the injustices which our fathers, brothers, and friends offered their lives to eradicate. Yet if we are worthy of our heritage, we can help to make this far-distant peace a reality. How can we, as individuals, do this? We can achieve our object only by putting to their greatest use our own special talents and skills which our training both at home and at Roslindale High School has developed, and which we, by our own efforts, must continue to cherish. Now, more than ever, every part we play not only will illuminate our future but will reflect our past. Our parents and our teachers have helped to equip us with the needed knowledge, but we alone can put that knowledge to practical use. We must be confident that we shall be equal to the tasks that lie before us-tasks more difficult and complicated since now the world we enter is torn by doubts and almost stagnated by confusion. Each of us must search for the place in which he may best apply his abilities. Some of us will make plans for a better worldg others will work to carry out those plans, and still others will teach the word of God to insure peace in the hearts of men everywhere. Today should not mark the end of our learning. Un the contrary, we should continue to learn something new every day, whether it be in another school, at our work, or in our social life. As long as we keep an open mind, we shall have an increasingly greater understanding of the world in which we live, but if we close our minds, our spirit will weaken, just as a flower, when it breaks from its root, withers and dies. Un this our graduation day we say goodby to ltoslindale lligh School, but that goodby is a gesture of farewell only to the tangible things there, for the lessons we have learned and the memories of the friends we have known will remain with us as long as we live. Let us thank God that in our time hostilities have ceased, and lei. us pray to Him that, through His generosity and His mercy, we shall be able to do our part to make our peace a lasting one. We experience again 0 Qu bf 'ae ci that sinking feeling we had when, QQQQ with the mysterious No. 136 slips clutched in our youthful hands, we timidly asked upper classinen how to get to our destinations, and ll X found how far it was to go from Room 117 to the gymnasium by vtmgai . ., way of the third floor. Through a X haze of confusing bells, we of the lost battalion finally reached our objectives, not the least of which was the third front-the lunchroom--which we manfully took practically singlehanded. Those first days at school during our sophomore year were all-ab- sorbing. It was not until we had settled down to our regular routine that we realized our interest in our own affairs had almost made us forget that, outside of school, 1Yorld War H was entering its most critical stage. When three of the faculty left to enter the service of our countryg when we went to the auditorium to pay tribute to Blajor Albert J. Kelley, our Military Drill instructor who had died in the serviceg and when more and more of us saw our fathers and brothers and friends enlist. our own private troubles seemed small indeed. Boys in the upper classes in our school disappeared suddenly, and returned in uniform for their last furlough or leave before they sailed to the Pacific or to Europe. And although we were glad of the holidays, we knew exactly what the issuing of Ration Book IV meant. But we had our work to do, and worries of our own, too,-report cards and the hope that they would not be too bright with the maroon of our school colors. However, after we had weathered the months to Christmas vacation, we felt better about ourselves, and with lighter hearts and more am- bitious minds we returned in January to Readin', 'Ritin', 'Rithmetic, and Rossie. Our trips to the Biology Lab were brightened Cparticularly for the girlsj by the little chore of digging into the internal cavities of frogs and worms. Something was the matter with our lunches on those days. In llilitary Drill the boys were preparing for the Prize Drill: we must admit that they were handsome in their new uniforms which were pretty sharp THEN. Almost before we knew it the Street Parade was a memory, as was the Flass of 194-3. 1901 During the summer many of us worked, taking the places of men who had entered the service, and although we were glad to do what we could for the war effort, we were happy to return to school in September, even though we 1m1st face a year of History bi-monthlies and an even more vigorous health education program which we were confident would either make or break us. It was this year that we had the experience of seeing some of our classmates enter the servicesg war was very close to us now. As a class we settled down to work. Un the playing fields our teams were doing a fine job: our football team ranked with the best the school has had. A light note sounded when it was rumored the girls were ga-ga over a voice attached to a tie on the radio. The ladies we soon noticed Wearing the same kind of clothes as Frankie. The shadow of sorrow engulfed us when our nation's leader flied on April twelfth. Although Franklin Delano Roosevelt had not lived long enough to see the result of his efforts towards peace, he had had faith in America and in us, too, that we would keep the wheels rolling. Three weeks later, on May seventh, the Presidents prayers and those of all the world were answered when V-E Day was proclaimed. The highlight of our junior year in school was the class election. After the candidates had given weeks to bill-posting, the building looked like a modern academy of art. The officers for the 194-5-46, our senior year, were finally chosen as follows: George Boudreau, president: Jolm 0'f'onnell, vice presidentg Ruth Johnson, secrctaryg and Anne Mcfarthy, treasurer. Our class sponsors were to be Bliss Gordon and hir. O'Bricn. But it was during vacation that the biggest day in the history of this class came. On August fourteenth, 1945, the Japanese Government accepted the United Nations surrender terms, and YYorld lYar II came to an end. YYe of Roslindale High Schools class of 1946 can say that we did our part to speed the day of final victory. Our record speaks for itself. Besides the many YYar Bonds and Stamps we bought as Junior Minute Men, we made super-salesmen during the lVar Loan Drives. Because of an acute manpower shortage, some 1 I f M, X Tl I f ' X S1L,:M UP!
