IHHSS HISWHY Remember the herd of unsophisticated sophomores who. on a fateful day in September. 19239. stormed the gates of Hoslindale High in their eagerness for knowledge? XVith the exception of a few casualties scalped by marauding school teachers. those same people are present here and now. Believe it or not. those grave and reverend sages sitting around you. were once sophomores. It's been a fascinating transition. this change from ignorance to bliss in three years. It all started when having crashed the gates of the brain factory. we were surrounded and coralled in our hoinerooms by certain sinister individuals whom we discovered to be teachers. As. battered and bent. we left school that day. we discovered that by some strange means we had acquired a bushel or two of books. Now the plot thickens. XVe also found ourselves bur- dened with devices of mental cruelty called home lessonsv. The teachers were behind it all. as any detective story fan could tell. From day to day. this went on until there burst upon us another phe- nomenon known as a test . For the eighty per cent who did not commit suicide. school held no more terrors. lThat's what they thought.l So passed our sophomore year. Then. as juniors. we had some one to patronize. The sophomores could tell you whether or not we made the most of this opportunity. Thus we spent our junior year. happilv buried in advanced algebra. Cicero. shorthand hieroglyphics. or what have you. 'lilll' big event of our junior year was the election oi ofiicers. You see before you the worn and venerable faces of the vietors in the fray. The gray hairs were caused by worry over the two or three iunongst us who did not get on the honor roll. Illlifl' sl.i'lw'1i wuzne au! wntglif whim i no l TELL.. Plllllllllll Hllllllll lllliatever breezy optimism may have informed Class Dai' slim-cln-s lornieiv ly. this year. certainly. is not one in which to proclaim that all is we-ll with the world. The conventional note in the past has been. tio forth, young men and women. into a future full of opportunities for those reach' to seize themf' The conventional symbol has been the wide road upon which youth marches steadily forward into the sunlight-into a world full of promise. For us today such agreeable conventions would be travestics of tht- truth. XYho can say what the future holds for the Class of 1942, or what the world of tomorrow may be? It becomes. then. our difficult task to steer between a shallow optimism that refuses to face reality and a defeatism which would tempt us to brood on the futility of effort. XXX- must somehow keep within ourselves a heroic faith in quiet unremitting labor to preserve our institutions and customs. In our vears in school we have learned to value our cultural traditions. XVe have also learned that we cannot rest in Passive acceptance of that heri- tageg it can be ours onlx' through our own efforts. .-Xnd thex' must extend x, Y c . bevond nhvsicll struggle and endurance. XYar is not an end in itself but a . l , ' F5 means. In the immediacy of the means. we must not lose sight of the end. lVhoever loves men must perceive within himself. as an absolute dutxi I the need of working to make them less unhaplw and the world less vile. Stated in more Positive terms. Papinfs words suggest the establishment ot the good societx' in which the good life is an imitation of Cod. and men are -? . D capable of brotherhood. But in the splendor of this ideal we must never. as Gerald Yann points out. forget that ultecoiistruction of character must precede reconstruction of societv. YYe must be good before we can do good, be real before we can accomplish real things. Even if we are disheartened even if we go down in defeat, it doesn't matter. If thex' are good. our ideals will triumph in the end. llc bear the burden and the heat Of the long day and wish 'twere done. Not till the hours of light return All we have built do we discern.
