Your Head Master rejoices with you members of the Class of IQ4O. and extends his congratulations to you on this occasion which is so significant in your lives. I-le feels that you may be justly proud of the fact that you have successfully accomplished a task which you undertook three years ago. The small part which he has had in training you for future citizenship has been an inspiration to him, and he prays that the years ahead will be peaceful ones in which the further development of your talents and the reali- zation of your ambitions will not be interrupted or diverted bv the necessity of combating any forces which might have a tendency to deprive you of the freedom and liberty which are your rightful heritage. Aceompanisl Mildred Doherty Albert O'Brien Presidenvs Address Every one of us, at some time or other, has expressed the desire to be a success. Some of us desire successful business careers: some seek suc- cess in a profession, and some just want to be a success without knowing how to achieve that goal. Addison said, lf you wish for success in life, make perseverance your bosom friend, experience your wise counsellor, caution your older brother, and hope your guardian genius. That is, Addison thought perseverance, experience, caution, and hope all necessary to success. We have shown perseverance in that we have finished our high school course. Some of us, I am sure, felt occasionally that a diploma was not worth the work required to attain it, but now that we have persevered, we feel rewarded for our work. As we grow older, there will be times when we shall feel that all is lost: let us remember this, and always try to realize that anything worth doing requires that old stick-to-it-iveness that is known as perseverance, While we have all shown perseverance, we have very little experience. Until the time when we have had experience of our own, let us listen to the counsel of those who are experienced. The fact that we are high school graduates does not mean that we know all that there is to know: in fact. we have a long way to go before we can consider ourselves as knowing any- thing at all. With this in mind, we should go to our elders for advice, for they have had the experience which we lack. After experience, Addison lists caution. In my mind, both extremes of caution are dangerous: the over-cautious person, or pussyfooter, is just as bad as the incautious man. Since we are all young, however. there are few of us who are over-cautious. The majority of us are inclined to be a little reckless, and if the reckless person meets with disaster in school, it is not diflicult to imagine what happens to him in later life. Hope, which is the last of Addison's requirements for success. is, it seems to me, the most important. We must have hope if we wish to succeed. When the going is the hardest, we may be down. but we're far from out if we cling to that hope which springs eternal in the human breast . Addison has told us the secret of success, but it seems to me he has omitted one point. The happiness which results from adjusting oneself to the conditions controlling one's life is a factor without which true success is impossible, for only the happy man can be successful. We shall soon have an opportunity to put these ideas into practice. May success of the right kind and happiness come to each of us. '40 page sz'.x'ty-sever: Valedietory We, the Class of 1940, have reached that point in our journey along the highway of life where each must make his way alone. We have arrived at a crossroad, with the future stretching far into the distance. Thus far we have travelled a common road. Working together, we have helped on: another in hurdling those obstacles which were so numerous in the course of our high school days. To you, Mr. Warren, and to the members of the faculty who have guided and directed our thoughts, who have endeavored to fit us for the life which awaits us, we wish to express our sincere appreciation and gratitude. Although at times we know we must have caused you moments of anxiety, perhaps you are consoled by the fact that your efforts have not been made in vain, and that in days to come we shall be thankful to you that your efforts have been an important factor in the successful accomplishment of our tasks in life. Upon graduation, some of us will go to colleges to prepare ourselves for professions. Some will continue the study of commercial subjects in busi- ness schools. Some will enter the business world directly. Wherever our travels may carry us, we shall often think of our high school days with pleasure, and realize how short those happy days were. We shall then be able to say truthfully, Our high school days were the happiest of our lives. Time speeds with swift wings, and we must follow. The moment has come to break the ties that have long bound us as a class. Whatever we may do, wherever we may go, may we find success and happiness in the work that lies ahead of us. Though our paths may never meet again, though we can never again be classmates, may the class feeling of good fellowship remain with us the rest of our lives. Our school work is finished, our preparation accomplished. And so. goodbye, - not farewell. May we always retain. long after the years have stolen our old friendships and associations, that buoyant spirit which has left its mark upon us. The curtain falls. The second act is to begin. With a last look at the sun, setting on our high school days, shining with glorious beauty, we turn our face toward the East and wait for the dawn with its new hopes and opportunities. the beginning of a new day. The experienced members work on Gas Models, and the beginners on the smaller ships. This year most of the members are wearing gold Buzz Bug wings as insignia of the club. This inspiring hobby of aeroplane building and the elementary theory of aeronautics have proven to be an interesting experience in modern science. page eighlgf-mm hai.. I S, . vi. Tierney. Its performances on various occasions have been a conspicuous part of our public entertainments. In the regular meetings of the club everything is done to develop the musical taste of the members so that they may understand and enjoy good music. In some instances latent talent has been discovered in the members of the club. page nrnettl-three . . -..HI . .x . I . ..i..... 2.-.. ' P I R I , A Q 2...
