I would be lacking in common courtesy if I did not extend my appreciation and gratitude for the confidence you have placed in me as your Class President. XVith my thanks goes that of the other Class Officers. and accompanying that thanks is our fervent hope that we have served you well and to the best of our ability. A brief review of the events of the past year shows us that a growth of school loyalty and spirit has been very noticeable. Athletic triumphs on the gridiron, in track, and on the diamond have been of such nne calibre as to establish the Green and Ciold as a definite threat in all sports. The social record of the Class has been enviable whether on formal or informal occasions. The counsel and guidance of our teachers, particularly Mr. XYarren, Miss O'Shea, Mr. Conlin and Major Kelley, has been of immense help to all here present. May I express to them our sincere thanks and best wishes for a happy future. The spirit of good-will and friendship that has carried us on. and helped us to achieve such success should not be allowed to die out now or at any future time. Allow me to express the desire that our relations with one another after graduation may be the more enriched by a large percentage of membership in the Alumni Association. Thank you-and good luck. Pueckoning and luring us on roads stretching in all directions-to college. to business school, to various lines of employment, On which road shall be plod unerringly along. The choice we make depends greatly on the training we have received i the training given us at the Roslindale High School. Under competent instructors there, and through careful guidance, we have become prohcient in the courses of study pursued. Now, largely because of our Head Masters personal interest and encouragement, we are richly endowed with ability and confidence to travel on the road we select as a steady, even. always forward pace, with courage to face and overcome all obstacles that may threaten to hinder our progress toward that goal for which we strive. VJe have worked and played together, we have helped each other in moments of stress, we have given our all to the school that has become so like a staunch friend. Now that the time has come to bid farewell. we do so fondly and reluctantly, with vain wishes for many happy, busy days to spend in the Roslindale High School. That happy life, so filled with busy working hours and pleasant recreational hours. equally enjoyable, is a decided contrast to the gravity and responsibility of the life we shall lead henceforward. But vain regrets bring only empty ICAIS, so now we must leave our carefree high school days behind us, and with our added knowledge and experience in life's ways, be ready to take life as it comes. ln later years, when we have attained some small degree of fame and recognition in the profession for which we have so diligently prepared, we shall point with forgiveable pride at our high school and modestly give it all credit for our success. At reunions. years from now. we shall expect to see only prosperous, intelligent men and women. for that is the type our school turns out. At parting. we, the members of the Class of 1038, earnestly hope that the Roslindale High School has profited to some extent by our brief stay, as a partial return for all it has done for us in the way of education and character building. Also, it is our sincere wish that Mr. Warren and all the members of the faculty realize our appreciation of their willing co- operation and active interest in our welfare. .losephine Gaines C60 l C ASS WILL We, the Class of IQ38, being of distracted mind, and in more or less full possession of the Faculty, hereby offer, ordain, publish and declare this to be our last Vvlill and Testament: and may Heaven never witness another like it .... The greatest drawback was the lack of a reed section, but Mr. Joseph McNamara. the clarinet teacher. set about to build a capable reed section. At the present time there are at least a dozen players who have graduated from the incubator into the Band. A note of praise is certainly in order for the instructors of the band for the fine work they have done this year. Mr. Sardillo, Mr. Gardner. Xlr. Latham, Mr. lVlcNamara, Mr. Calabron. and Mr. Heartl, the facultv adviser. have all contributed much of their time and experience. It is sincerely hoped that next year's members will endeavor to build the band in such a way as to establish it as a permanent unit in Roslindale High. t8s.t I . 1 1 u 4 M- 111001 - at is x14 -an-... 5 WDALYJ - X X, X. x HE IDC ESTIQA Ar the beginning of the year it was found that quite a few musicians were unable to take part in orchestra work because of program dificulties. This was quite a loss to Mr. Wagner. but as the months rolled by, he found tha the newer members were able to make up the loss of those veterans fairly well. Mr. Wagner has acquired some new and interesting melodies that are very pleasing to the ear. One of the fine points of a good conductor may be found in the knack of knowing when to introduce new selections. Mr. Wagner most certainly has this trait. For the past few weeks the orchestra has been under the batons of several guest conductors lstudent instructorsl. Previous to this the mem- bers of the orchestra did not fully realize the efficiency and adaptability of the conducting of Mr. Wagner. Because of the large number of new pupils expected next year. it is hoped that the orchestra will be much larger and will prove much more progressive. l84l E15 g'E'.-:E 'T-'-n EEE X' 1 HE GLEE CLUI3 When the Glee Club started, in the fall of IQ36, it consisted of a small group of girls of unknown ability. Now, after two years of train- ing under the able leadership of Mr. Tierney, it is an experienced chorus of acknowledge excellence. Its performances have been enjoyed by the school at the celebrations of Armistice Day, Wasl1ington's Birthday. and Memorial Day. Our public concert has been given with marked success. The program now under preparation for the graduation exercises is being looked forward to with pleasure. Not only has the ensemble been of high grade but some very good solos have been sung by Anna Mugrditchian and Mary Lennon with piano accompaniments by Dorothy Marchant. Dorothy l-amsel. Betty Sargent. and Betty McLeod. ln the future no school exhibition will seem complete without some conrtibution from the Glee Club and its talented soloists. The three exceptionally strong athletic teams of 1937-38 have gained for Roslindale High recognition as a really important factor in Boston school athletics. The first of these three great teams was of course the gridiron eleven. Captained by two splendid players. Ed Vxfallace and Ace Morrill. the team made a vehement bid for the city championship. only to lose it by a heartlbreaking defeat at the hands of South Boston High with a score of two to nothing. Largely responsible for the success of the team was burly Tom 'Scoop' Broderick who oflicially held down the end position, but who generally was in the backfield kicking or passing one of his deadly spirals so greatly feared by even the most capable opponents. Another outstanding player was center Hal Kallenberg who should have been continuously and fervently praying for more protective headgear. Two other conspicuous teamfmates were Red Lynch and Bunny l-eBlanc who both played very noticeable parts in all the Rossie gridiron battles. Another veteran was ambidexterous John Keady. whose cleverness and quick thinking saved many a Rossie fan from rueful disappointment. Robert Fish Kearney was the means by which Rossie gained most of her needed yardage. But without those gaping holes made by Paul Stretch Shirar. Cieorge 'Jkrchie' Sotir. .loe Baglio, Robert Duke Saflalo, and Barney Kelly. even l5ish couldnt have gone through. Seven other lads without whom Rossie couldn't have gotten along were llan Donovan, centerg Charles lNlcKenney, guardg 'liom liitxpatrick. XValter Yarosh. and .laiiies Brine. all backfield men, lidmund l.owe. a lines man, and .lohn .loyce. a very capable end. 5901 hw l fi .WX . X X X TIQACK Proving that quality and not quantity counts, the Roslindale High track team of 1937-38 captured second place in the annual district meet. NVe gained nine lirst places: Frank Dierauf and Steve Murphy won in the hurdles, Bernard Conrad. in the dash, John Thomas tlast years heroi in the 220 and the broad jump, Ed Lachinsky, in the 176, George Sommers. in the Class C high jump, and Carl Frederico, in the D, and Paul Shirar. in the shot put. But we would not have made that splendid showing if it hadn't been for those other boys who picked up two or three points here and there. Some of those boys were as follows: Ralph Osborne. Chet Stamper, Vxfarren Patterson, and John Dunphy in the hurdles: Ben Bedugnis, Charles lVlcKenney, Arthur Dorsey, Ray Weinstock. Carl Frederico, and Charles Higgins in the dash: Bob Clancy in the 176: Stuart Morrison. Bill Bonner, and Bob Callahan in the 220: Joe Vitello. John Sullivan. James Bourke, and Bill Connelly in the ioooz Scoop Broderick, Stretch Shirar, and John Bright in the shotput: and Ed McCirath and Charles Dustin in the high jump. One of our boys broke a district record and two others equalled one. ln the Class C hurdles, Steve Murphy easily outclassed all other contenders and broke the record. ln the Class A hurdles and Class B dash, Frank Dierauf and Bernard Bud Conrad equalled the marks respectively. ln the Regimental Meet five boys won places: Frank Dieraut, John Thomas. There are several reasons for this: First of all we will mention the nine participants. On first base is the future all-scholastic John Keady. On second we find old reliable Bun- ny LeBlanc. As his team-mate in shortstop position whom do we see but Scoop Broderick. And as if that wasnt enough for one infield we have two fine third basemen. Alex Girvan and John Mahoney. ln left field we have John Joyce, an all-round Sportsman. And on the other side of the field. as a sort of balance to Joyces proficient playing. is Dan Donovan. Harold Kallenberg. when not pitching, plays centerfield. Be- hind the plate is another newcomer, Buddy Lorenz. And on the rub- ber, besides Kallenberg. is James Bill Brine. another veteran who helped win the city championship for Rossie last year. Among the capable substitutes are Ralph Osborne. who is headed for a regular berth in the outheld. Ray Smith, another outfielder. Frank Hiatt and George Hasenfuss. two clever pitchers, George Sotir. who fills in for 'Kal' when he is pitching. Melrose Reid. an infielder, Joseph Hurley, a catcher. and Robert Curtin. a second baseman. liinally, to reveal the reason for Rossies success. we mention coach lfred Murray as a grand coach who knows his sports and remembers the password to popularity. fair and square . igzt DIIQECTUIQY Adami.
