Durircj this year our beloved teacher, Mrs. Mace, passed away but left us with many good memor- ies of her and her great concern for us. At the end of the year we all had a very good time decorating for the Junior-Senior Prom. The theme was Wonderland by Night and everyone enjoyed it. Sherry Ungemach Say, Klemm, have you seen the latest edition of the Roseville Herald Tribune? Why no Mike. Is there anything in it about the new missile factory here in Roseville? Nothing much, but a new column started today in the paper. What is it called? Guys, Gals, and Gossip, written by the greatest literary genius of the twenty- first century, Tohn Swingle. Do you happen to have your paper with you ? “Why, yes. Then let's read it. Last night, your roving reporter spent the night gathering candid information for my first column. First I went to the Boom Boom Room of the Spearmint Lounge, owned by that millionaire and business tycoon, Diamond Bill Crabtree. Rumor has it that he made his million the hard way, in a grocery store. .Back in the Boom Boom Room, I greatly enjoyed the music of Charles Spires and his Live Wires. Next, we heard a few numbers by the nightclub singer, Lois Head. Rumor has it that Charlie and Lois have been touring the night spots together. Watch my column for further developments on these two. Next, the audience was intrigued by the exotic dancing of Ginny Snell and Nancy Young. The girls certainly danced up a storm. Infact, a riot started, but Tohn Eliot Ness Dawson and his Touchables arrived in the nick of time. At this point, your daring reporter made a quick exit out the back window. I glanced back once, and saw Wayne Savage and Harry Caton, the bouncers, slugging it out with the police. Making good my escape, and the night being young, I hailed a passing cab for the Bird's Nest , the local college kid's hangout, owned and operated by Ronnie Tweetie Bird. To my surprise, the cab driver was none other than Marilyn Wickham, the terror of Roseville's public streets. Just before we reached our destination, we were forced off the road by a speeding fire truck, driven by Chief Carl Kane and his trusty smoke eater, Toe Cummings. I never learned if those trusty guardians of life and home made it to the fire, for as they rounded the comer, we heard a sickening crash. Upon reaching my destination, I paid the cabbie, and entered The Bird Nest. The smoke was so dense that I accidently bumped into a waitress, who to my suprise turned out to be Carole Fitzpatrick. She steered me to a table where she gave me a menu and took my order for a pizza. The juke box was pounding out Faded Love and Wilted Roses sung by America's Sweetheart, Betty Still. Two young college kids were dancing cheek to cheek in the center of the dance floor. They were Becky Thompson and Rick Wilson, both of whom are seniors at Billingsley University, the local college. Mostof you may not know it, but the college was named for Mrs. Bonnie Billingsley, the wealthy society lady. Over in a smoke filled comer sat two fads of the pad, Ronnie Maines and Janet Wolfe. As most of you know, fads of the pad are beatniks. I noticed my pizza was being prepared by the National Pizza Baking Champion, Mark Pepperoni Hendrickson. After eating my pizza and paying my bill, I strolled out into the cool night air. Walking uptown I noticed a poster advertising a prize fight at the Arena featuring Terry Killer Miller and Paul Leave'm Dyin Bryan. Suddenly the still night air was ripp- ed by the sound of sirens. Thinking a story might be hrewing, your daring reporter follow- ed the ambulances to the hospital. The nurse, Tim Savage, informed me that the Mayor of Roseville, Carol Adams, was merely coming in for her weekly check up. Getting back to my original mission of touring the night spots,I proceeded tc Roseville High School. The alumni Banquet was being held that night. Inside I metsome of the distinguished alumnae. They were Farrell Anderson, outstanding piccolo player for the Roseville Philharmonic, Kristine Kildow, president of the Roseville Dill Pickle Plant, who was elected National Businesswoman of the Year for perfecting the perfect pickle, and Ray Valentine, president of the Lonely Hearts Club, a community effort to stamp our all elig- ible bachelors. Over in one corner, I noticed that valiant astronaut Keith Pietcher being photographed by Paul Lovinqshimer as Keith's wife, Shiela Pietcher, lovingly plants a kiss on his cheek. Over in one comer, I spied Tames Mclnerney, the famous nuero-surgeon, better known to his associates as Mac the Knife. Just before I left, in walked Mr. Muscles of 1970, Roger Murgatroyd, world's strongest man. I noticed by the watch that it was time for the local girls' softball team, the Bowden Bullies coached by the All-American girl softball player, Arlene Bowden. The Bullies are playing that powerful team from Del Carbo Tech which stars such brilliant players as Eleanor Spitball Renick and Dorothy Home Run Cumberlidge. I arrived at the stadium just in time to see that outstanding pitcher Tudy Young, warm up. I hear she learned the fine art of pitching from her husband. After the third inning, the score being 42 to 0, I decided to rent a car and go for a ride in the country. The ride would have been peaceful except for the fact that I was arrested by that notorious motorcycle policeman, Tames Barbour, for the ridiculous charge of driving 21 m.p.h. in a 20 m.p.h. zone . I was brought before the terror of the bench, Tustice Linda Pennington, who is reported to have sentenced Larry Bell, for flying his car without a pilot's license. I was afraid that I was going to be fined a fortune, but through the assistance of that famous criminal lawyer, Gerald Hina. I got off by only paying a $500 fine. Weary of the long night's work, I decided to return to my peaceful home near the sub- way. But I discovered that I was nearly out of gas, so I stopped at a neighborhood gas station operated by Sherry Unqemach. It seems that she became interested in this type of work during her high school days. Leaving the station, I decided to listen to the radio I tuned in the radio to station WRHS, where the famous women's hair stylist, Jim Tignor, was giving expert adviceon how to powder your wig. After that welcome advice, two commentators. Earl Bowen and Jim Strickler. discussed the merits of the local sewage system. Hey, Klemm, we're mentioned in the article! We are! Yes, it says: Finally I reached home on 42nd street, weary but happy in the sense that I had successfully completed my first column. I was greeted by the milkman. Klemm Ungemach, who has faithfully served on the milk force for the last 42 years. Just as I reached the door a paper dropped at my feet. Looking back I saw the paperboy, Mike Skinner, going down the street. He is just another faithful servant of the public. Pretty good column, huh, Mike? Yep, pretty good column. The baseball team of Roseville High School of 1961 again deserves much recognition for their successful season. The team entered the tournament with a record of 2 wins and 3 losses. The County Tournaments were played at Maysville. In the first game Roseville defeated Frazeysburg 3-2 with the fine pitching of Bob Bargar. Frazeysburg was leading in the 7th inning 2-0 and then Roseville came alive and displayed their finest effort by scoring 3 runs with 2 outs. Bob Dozer got a base hit to score Charles Williamson and Rick Wilson got a double to score Bob Dozer and David Yeager. For those who saw this game I'm sure they will admit it was an exciting one. They became County Champs by defeating Maysville 12-1 with Junior Anders being the winning pitcher. Terrific batting ability was shown by David Yeager, Bob Dozer, Bill Barker and Two homeruns by Junior Anders. This carried them into the Sectional Tournaments where they beat Newport 7-0 and Rosecrans 5-3. Anders pitched a No-Hitter the Newport game and was backed by hits of Bill Barker and Rick Wilson. Anders also pitched the Rosecrans game and Miles Payton, Junior Anders and Lynn Crane picked up hits. Crane had 3 for 3. They proved to be quite a team in the District where they became CHAMPS by defeating Cadiz 6-0 and Maysville 8-3. Charles Williamson got 2 hits the Cadiz game but was given much help from the rest of the team and the pitching of Junior Anders. Bob Snyder was credited with the victory over Maysville with Junior Anders, Bill Barker, and Bob Snyder getting hits. They were sitting pretty good now with a 6-0 tournament record. They were on their way to Canton, Ohio4to try and defeat Powhattan who had defeated them in '59 and '60. This was the first time in history of Roseville High School that a team had ever taken part in Regional Tournaments. The people of Roseville gave $212.55 to help support this trip. The team went on Friday and spent the night before the game. They had a fine time. Many fans turned out to watch this heartbreaking 1-0 defeat. Junior Anders pitched a No-Hitter but we were unable to top their unearned run which they got in the first inning. Three trophies were given at the Awards Day Assembly. The batting trophy went to Bob Snyder, and the best tournament played award went to Rick Wilson, and the pitching trophy went to Junior Anders. In the complete season Roseville got 59 runs while the opponents got 28. The seniors of 1961 put forth a lot of effort to help maintain this success. They were: Bob Snyder, Miles Payton, Dave Yeager, Junior Anders, Bob Dozer, Bill Barker, Charles Williamson, and Paul Williams. This was all made possible by the good coaching of Mr. Justin Dantonio. Announcement was made Tuesday following the contract signing witnessed by Scout Ollie Vanek, Anders' parents, Mr. and Mrs . Howard Anders, Sr., and members of the family in their Roseville home. Anders signed to play for Johnson City, Tennessee, in the Appalachian Rookie League, composed of first-year players . The $5,000 bonus is believed to be the largest ever commanded by an area youth for signing a professional diamond contract. Don Branson, former ZHS star who also was signed by the Cardinals in 1958, received a reported $4,000 for signing. Anders, who was 19 on June 24, attracted scouts from many major league clubs in recent weeks and also caught their eyes during his recent high school regional tournament test where he lost a hearbreaking 1-0 verdict although hurling a no-hitter. Anders, whose scholastic record is a sparkling one including six no-hitters, three of them coming this year, is a six-footer who weighs 165 pounds. He also is a strong hitter. As recently as Sunday night in the Stadium, he hit a home run and hurled two-hit ball in five innings of relief pitching as Cannelville opened with a 12-0 win over Zanesville American Legion. He fanned eight. The talented lefty's signing breaks up a COL brother combination at Cannelville since his brother. Bill, is the No. 1 receiver for the club. 70 The new Cardinal hopeful posted a 14-6 won-and-lost record in high school play in 1958 through 1961. In 1958 he had a 4-2 record, hurled one no-hitter, struck out 61 and allowed 31 hits in 45 innings . In 1959 he also had a 4-2 record with 56 strikeouts in 37 innings while allowing 23 hits. In 1960 he appeared in only one game, suffering a broken jaw shortly after hurling his debut no-hitter. He struck out 12 in the seven-inning tussle. This spring he won five and lost two while hurling three no-hitters, striking out 101 and allowing only nine hits in the seven contests while hurling 50 innings. He also batted at a .313 clip. Anders belted seven home runs during his high school career, according to Justin Dantonio, his coach. The youngster's signing helps bring true a dream once harbored by his father, who was a top-notch catcher for Cannelville, where the family resided until five years ago. Anders will be pitching against Zanesville's Tom Abbott, who has just been assigned to the Appalachian Rookie League's, Salem, Virginia team; also a pitcher.
