Our Superintendent Friends: It is a privilege to bring you greetings from the Vernon Parish School Board and to com- pliment you for making possible a record of your school activities for us to review and enjoy for many years to come. The pictorial record of buildings and facilities show signs of progress but these things are only empty shells without you--------our students and teachers. The true worth of any school is shown in the quality of its product. Students, you have the privilege of living in the most exciting, challenging and turbu- lent period in man’s history, but with this privilege will come great and grave responsibility. The way you face the pressures and solve the problems will determine tomorrow’s world. Best wishes to each individual represented in this publication. Sincerely, Curtis Bradshaw Superintendent Vernon Parish Schools

Ivy Calhoun SPEAKS It is aptly noted that learning is always an individual matter. However, an individual does not learn in a social vacuum, but he learns as a result of what society provides in the way ol stimulus and facility. The educational enterprise of today is no longer hampered by the social attitude which tolerated non-attendance at school, nor is there the great lack of facilities or money for edu- cation such as pertained to earlier days; yet, the fundamental remains unchanged by the pas- sage of time, if the process of education is to produce desirable results. The primary motiva- tion of the student continues to relate to social influence. This may better be obtained by uniting the best of home, church, school, and all other worthy agencies of society into a pat- tern of operation, unified around the principle of providing the best possible set of influences on the educational development of the child. In this era of automation and the accompanying complex society, our state and nation need young people capable of asking the right questions and of seeking the correct answers as well as those with technical and PRINCIPAL IVY CALHOUN vocational training. It is our earnest desire at this institution to aid in such education to help young men and women de- velop their freedom together with a growing sense of responsibility. May 1 extend congratulations and appreciation to the editor, staff, and sponsors of this book. It represents a commendable service to this school.
