VARSITY FCCTBALI. A VANCES T0 THE PL YOFF Playing an extremely tough preseason schedule, the Varsity started the season with a one win four loss preleague record. How tough the preseason schedule was became apparent as all of the teams played became highly ranked in their conferences or advanced to the playoffs. As the campaign progressed the team had been ad- justing players into different positions and had steadily improved its defense. Defense was to play an important role in Mission Valley league competition. Despite losing a hard fought I0 to 0 loss to Arroyo, the team had realized that it could do well in its remaining league games. The team had three successive league wins starting with a win over EI Monte which wasn't decided until the closing seconds. The Panthers proved to be tough playing before Homecoming Games as they spoiled both Mountain View and Duarte's Home- comings. The win over Duane was important in that Duane was the league's first place team. Playing well, the defense had a string of seven scoreless quarters while containing Duarte, who up to that time, had led the league in scoring. The last league game proved to be disappointing as Rosemead fell to Mark Keppel. A win would have enabled them to be co-champs while the loss placed the team as the league's second place finisher in the CIF playoffs. The Panthers played a very young team made up of a number of juniors and sophomores starters. The traditionally tough defense highlighted this l985 season. The captains of the team were Henry Chavez, James Banuelos, and John Bush.
