BDYS TRACK DEFEATS EL M0 TE AND TEMPLE ITY The Varsity Boy's Track Team was off to its fastest start in IO years. Going into the 2nd league meet. the team had recorded wins over Pioneer, Temple City, and El Monte. The team's only loss came against Pius X in which a number of the distance runners did not participate. The team's medley relay team was undefeated in competition as they broke a number of meet records. Some of the outstanding indivi- duals were Chris Jimenez, Aaron Mascorro. and Ramon Perez in the distances. While others doing well were: Ricky Villacorte in the sprints, Juan Salgado in the 440 and up, Chris Latham and Marcus Crunk in the hurdles, Mike Mc- Donald in the high jump. Art Tan and Kea Phoa Day in the jumps, Jose Franco in the weights, and David Avalos in the pole vaults. Juan Salgado said this about the team, I thought track was fun and rewarding. Our success was more than we expected. The Frosh-Soph team had a number of outstanding indivi- duals. Marcus Crunk and Ramon Perez ran in the Varsity division but when running against other sophomores did extremely well. The Frosh-Soph team had one of their best team records in a number of years. Some outstanding indivi- duals were Chris Espinoza, Don Bueno and Ben Guinto in the sprints while Henry Ngo and Ben Team did well in the jumps. Mike Utley, Sean Moore and Robert Mendoza also did well in the hurdles. Marcus Crunk said this about the team. This was my first year on track. l had a good time and l learned a lot. I. Bottom Row: Dyanna Soto, Teresa Flores, Zulma Rico. GIRLS TRACK TQUGH IN DISTANCEXWEIGHTS The Girls track teams had the largest turnout in over three years. The teams featured some outstanding individuals, particularly in the distances, hurdles, shotput, and discus. The team was composed of many underclassmen who could be in contention for the league championship next year. Some of the out- standing individuals on the Varsity team in- cluded Wednesday Guerrero and Alina Rico in the distances, Maria Gutierrez in the half mile, Dyanna Soto in the hurdles. Sally Hines and Bernadette Ahhing in the shotput and discus. and Martha Hernandez in the high jump. The team lost the opening league meet to El Monte, but its distance medley relay team placed third at the East Los Angeles Invitational. Some of the coaches included Mr. Jim Zant in the sprints, Mr. Jose Marquez in the distances, Mr. Mark Krajnik in the hurdles, and Mr. Steve Nichols in the jumps. while Mr. Harlan Mayne helped with the shotput and discuss. Throughout the season, a strong feeling of comraderie developed among the athletes. Donna Chung remarked, Track was a new and fun experience.
