VARSITY STUNS LE GUE CH MPS The Varsity basketball team started the season opti- mistically with a number of key players returning. The team was much improved over last season, as demon- strated by their first tournament championship, the Flintridge Prep Tournament, in IO years. During Mis- sion Valley League competition, the team lost a few key games by close scores. Rosemead was the only team to defeat the league champions, Mountain View High School, both times in which they met. In the first meeting of the year against Mountain View, the game ended in overtime which Rosemead won by the slim score of 56-55. They also defeated arch-rival Arroyo High School in both meetings - a feat unaccom- N, plished in over 20 years. The varsity team was ranked as high as Sth in the San Gabriel Valley by the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. Their record of I2 wins and 9 losses was the best record for a Rosemead team in recent years. Some of the outstanding individuals in- cluded junior Mike McDonald, who led the West Val- ley in scoring, and Mike Fromme, who was also 6th in scoring.
