1 ,ff-.ma One of the most spectacular programs of the year was EKL band festival, at which Rosedale was host to over three hundred musicians playing in massed concert in the gymnasium. This was the first time that Rosedale had been host for this an- nual event. In addition to all these activities the band par- ticipated in two concerts for the general public, presented a student assembly concert, played in the Argentine activities association parade, and played for all the school pep assemblies. At the mid-winter concert, on February 13, the band presented what was probably its most am- bitious concert number, Sea Portrait, by LaGas- sey, an impressionistic composition depicting the various moods of the mysterious sea. Other numbers on the program were The Nutmeggersf' by Oster- ling, May Overture, by May, Storm King, by Finlayson, Waltz for Bandj' by Morrissey, Mr. Wonderful, arranged by Hayman, and a swing number, Carry Me Back to Old Virginneyf' by Hathaway. The Storm King number was directed by Terry Tague, student director for the band. Tague has held first chair trumpet in the band for the past two years. As usual, members of the group assisted with the magazine sales campaign, from which a part of the money for the purchase of new instruments and the repair of existing ones, comes. A new fund to swwnwmsw f f ' 1 ,an . .. X I .fag N. eventually replace all the band uniforms has also been started, and part of the sale proceeds will go into this fund. Additional funds come from the Board of Education, student fees, and proceeds from concerts. The goal of Mr. William Stoskopf, a fully in- strumented concert band, was reached this year with a membership of '75 and the addition of several in- struments needed to fill out all the chairs. In spite of the size of the group all members were fully uni- formed, the result of the continuing program of ROBO, the Rosedale orchestra and band organiza- tion, the school administration, and the members of the band itself. The basic service of the band is, of course, fur- nishing the music for football and basketball games, as well as presenting half-time entertainment. This, however, was but a small part of the group's activi- ties, for they seemed to be constantly on the move. Early in the fall they attended the K. U. band day, marching in the morning parade and playing at the football game half time. They were again a featured band at the American Royal, the third time in five years, Where they presented a special drill in honor of Oklahoma day. Among the honored guests was the governor of Oklahoma. In addition the band again participated in the American Royal parade.

X 3 V I 1 I ' , 5, ., 'K' E5 ml Under the direction of Mr. William Stos- kopf, the orchestra in the past few years has grown into an outstanding musical organiza- tion, the only one of its kind among Eastern Kansas league schools, and a group capable of holding its own with the better musical rou s of the city. g Thrrough the sustained efforts of Mr. Stoskopf, the school administration, the or- chestra members, and ROBO, the parents' booster organization, additional instru- ments have been added, and a permanent instrument maintenance program set up. In addition, the group plays as many public en- gagements as possible in order to provide members with concert experience. The orchestra, as does the band, gives stu- dents a chance to work in a musical group and to give service through participating in many activities. They played on the pro- gram for dedication and open house, at the Junior play and the Pep club play, for the Christmas program, participated in two paid concerts and a student assembly concert, an EKL festival, and for the city-wide Founders Day PTA program held at Rosedale this year for the first time. The orchestra also participated in the annual magazine sale, the proceeds of which are used to purchase new instruments and make any repairs necessary.
