Rosedalians-Cum Land Until th-is year, the most familiar person to be seen at Rosedale, was Mr. Dudley F. Bentley, nur principal. But because of the in- crease in work and responsibility as a result of program, and the fact that Mr. not been too well, he felt he his duties over to someone else. the building Bentley has should turn I Mr. Bentley first came to Rosedale in 1926, teaching biolo-gy and general science. In 1933, he assumed his duties as principal, For the next 22 years, Mr. Bentley worked out thousands of schedules for students, kept their records straight, listened to their' trou- bles, attended nearly every sports and social activity at school, made 99W of the announce- ments over the P.A. system, disciplined those who needed it, and performed countless other 9 duties. Mr. Bentley is now teaching general sci- ence at Wyandotte High School. He is mar- ried and has two daughters. In the fall of 1921, a young woman join- ed the teaching staff at Rosedale. No doubt, her fellow teachers were unaware that Mrs. Sarah Howard would continue to teach here for the next 34 years. During her first year at RHS, Mrs. Howard taught glee club, orchestra and chorus, and was music supervisor of all schools in the Rosedale district. In 1929, she received a B.M. degree from the American Conservatory of Music. From Hays College, in 1936, she received a B.S. degree. A year later, she received her Masters degree from Columbia University. Since retiring Mrs. Howard has- been quite active. In the morning she works in her sister's drapery shop, and in the after- noon she assists the Mozart Club in putting on programs for veterans in various hospi- tals, as master of ceremonies. Mrs. Howard is living with her mother, and has no definite plans for the future. - -7-...l.......-.-L ua-an ' To The Faculty and Students: The school year of 1955 and 1956 may well be remembered as the year Rosedale began operating on split sessions. This was brought about by the building program which left us with limited classrooms and fa- cilities. In spite of the split sessions, the faculty has endeavored to uphold the high standard of scholarship for which Rosedale has always been noted. In order to accomplish this, it has been necessary to drop some of the activities which have been practiced in the past and devote a .larger percent of the school day to academic solids. To each member of the graduating class of 1956, I wish to say, that here at Rosedale we are confident you will take your rightful place among the high school graduates in our nation. We also hope for your success and happiness in your future endeavors. To those students returning to Rosedale for at least another year, may we look with pride upon the accomplishments which have already been achievedg yet, at the same time strive for higher goals. i ff 1 , U Ir, ,,-4. .,. -,, ,... . In 1906 the annex was built on Mount Marty, a hill named for Albert Marty, who gave the land to the city for the building. Before the main building was constructed in 1927, the annex housed not only the Classrooms and shops, but also the auditorium and gymnasium. In past, years the annex has been used for just six classrooms and shops. Y- 4..,., ..... ...Q--g4ni:n ' ? ff A RFE Ns ss? The officers for the year were 'Iudy Collins, president, Donna Sumner, vice-presidentg Mary Deboard, secretary, and Lor- raine Lee, treasurer. The Pep club is the largest group, 127 students, in the history of Rosedale junior high, and much of this response has come from two factors: The estab- lishment of the activity ticket as admission to the games, and the emphasizing this year of separate junior and senior high activities. h Pop Club The cheerleaders for the year were Loraine Lee, Loretta Duffy, Judy Collins, janet Straughn, Anita Elvins, and Mona Gragg. They led the junior high Pep club in the cheers at the games and at the pep assemblies. Cheering at the games and sponsoring the tal- cnt show homecoming dance and the football and basketball banquets are the activities of the senior high Pep club This years Pep club has been the largest group exer at Rosedale The officers were Gloria Calahan president Karlene Howell, first semester Sandra Wfiand second semester, secretary, Delores Pennington xice president, and Vena Watt, treasurer Miss Esther Nicklin sponsored the club, with the help of Mrs lone George and Mr. Charles 5' 2.559 ahh-r 'limi 'TIS' - !'3f 'f'-'T 1 L ' T I ga-6 enior High Pep Club school activities. As a part of their actnities members planned and presented pep assemblies before home football games and during the basketball season The cheerleaders this year were Sue Huff Lo retta Craig, Shirley Christian Camille Taylor o Ann Ashlock and Vivian Briggs All cheerleaders except Christian and Taylor, are returning cheerleaders from last year. The girls'dut1es were to lead the cheers at the football games, basketball games and other Musical touches add much to many activities of the year, such as home football and basketball games, all pep assemblies, the American Royal Parade, and the Eastern Kansas League mu- sic festival. The Rosedale high school band, under the direction of Mr. William Stoskopf, played for all of these. Band With the increase of enrollment in the band class, new uni- forms were purchased year before last by the ROBO, and the specially designed outfits have added much to the band's ap- pearances. The band, like the orchestra, has had to meet in the audi- torium on the stage during fifth hours, both in the morning and afternoon sessions, and so far this year's activities have been greatly handicapped. T o The orchestra of Rosedale high school, directed by Mr. William Stoskopf, has performed in a very pleasing and effi- cient way. The group, with the band, gave two concerts, played for the Christmas services, attended the Eastern Kansas League music festival, and added the finishing touches to many per- formances, including plays, PTA programs, and commencement exercises. , rohestra 2 The group has grown not only in numbers, but in the va- riety of instruments, the latter made possible with money from the Board of Education, plus an equal amount raised through the efforts of the Rosedale Orchestra and Band organization, a parents' group. ' In the past years, the orchestra has met in the band and orchestra room in the annex but this year the class was held on the stage of the auditorium during fourth and fifth hours.- ,. ., s, .,,,, mp., ,W YY,, v Y Y- Y , , ---N-LY,-.-,,7....,,. The group sang in assemblies, for the Christmas program, attended the Eastern Kansas league music festival, and sang Christmas carols in the hall at Christmas time. They were also an important part of baccalaureate services, the commencement services, and gave the spring concert. The glee club is under the direction of Miss Mildred Fulhage, who was in her first year here, having been transfer red from Central junior high school. Junior Hi la Choru Like the glee club the junior high chor- us has had many activities during the year. Twenty-nine members are in the class and all have been very busy trying to entertain the student body with their harmonious music. Miss Mildred Fulhage was the sponsor of the organization, and Meridith Adams, an eighth grade student, was the accompa- nist. One of the members, Janet Straughn. ninth grader, sang with the choir. Enough money was raised by last year's Student Council to continue the sponsoring of Edward Chrus- ciel, a war orphan, this year. Officers for the year were Steven Sanders, president, David Armentrout, vice-president, Camille Taylor, secretary, and David Rowlands, treasurer. Miss Eva Carstensen was their sponsor. Junior High-The junior high Student Coun- cil, under the leadership of Mr. Rollin Wanamaker, has had many activities this year. They have patrolled the halls, sponsored dances, and taken care of the tickets at the varsity assemblies. Gfficers for this year were Anita Elvins, president, Martha Carter, vice-president, and Carol Houser, secretary-treasurer. New this year were distinctive arm bands worn by the Council members during school hours. Fe '-.a-.La '- wuz-'i ff -':'-' Q ' ': f xLx.- . , ,,,,,. ,, ,, . . , ., . xx.x.x ,..,. x....,.,.., Y Q. ,. Credit for this accomplishment goes to the publications students and their sponsor, Mr. Philip Keeler. Besides putting out the paper, the staff held a spring dance, and a mixer in which the funds were used to help pay for the annuals. Editors for the year were Sue Huff, first semester, and Gloria Calahan, second semester, Cala- han assisting Huff and Sandra Wiand assisting Calahan. Sports editors were Larry France, first semester, and Mil- dred Holt, second semester. The school year of 1955-56 was a busy . year for the Mount Marty annual staff. . Many hours work was put into editing the annual, the majority of which had to be done outside of class. E Pamciq Reynolds The job really began in the spring of Editor. 1955, when the Henington Publishing Com- Q if F i 1 1 l I Philip R. Keeler Sfaff Adriror pany was contracted to publish the 80-page book. Early last fall, the staff was chosen, and the book slowly began to take shape. A tentative layout of every page was made at that time and the staff began the chore of gathering together the hundreds of pictures that went into this annual. ' A 1'.E3'lE?Q' V ount Mart Annual taff On December 1. one-third of the annual pages had to be sent to the publishing com- pany, another third had to be sent by jan- uary 15, and March 1 was the final dead- line for all copy. Although the book represents much hard work and anxiety by the staff, yet the ex- perience gained from working on the tech- nical end of a book and dealing with busi- ness firms was more than rewarding. Below are Dale Henry and Bill Heitholt. Henry was B A team coach and Heitholt was Davies' assistant. Both are new at Rosedale this year. Football The first year under Coach Walter Lefty Davies, left, was a successful one, as the team won five and lost three, and took second in the East .Kansas league. Rosedale 6 Wfestport 0 The first game with Westport was won when Walter Hawkey ran 45 yards for the only touchdown of the game .after picking up a fumble. It was the first victory over the Tigers since 1949. Rosedale O Ward 26 Cyclones usually fweep everything up into the air, and this one was no exception, as three of Ward's touch- downs came on passes andthe other immediately fol- lowed one. Rosedale 20 Bonner 13 The Wfildcatsi all-around offense proved too much for Bonner, as Rosedale won its first East Kansas league tilt. Rosedale 21 Osawatomie 0 The best played game of the yearl' in Coach Davies' words. Rosedale picked up two quick touch- downs in the second quarter and one in the third and played fine defense all night. Rosedale 0 Paola 14 The upset of the year in the league occurred the night of October 21 when Paola downed the Wildcats on two last period tallies. Rosedale 13 Olathe 7 The 'Cats bounced back to take their third league win over the cellar-dwelling Eagles. Gloria Quick was crowned Homecoming Queen between halves. Rosedale 55 St. Agnes 20 After floundering around for two weeks, Rose- dale's offense exploded, to put it mildly. Bud Woolery put on the greatest offensive show in Rosedale history, scoring four touchdowns and kicking seven extra points, for a total of 31 points. The scoring record of 54 points was also broken. The old record had been established -exactly ten years ago the week before. Rosedale 16 Turner 26 With a tie for the championship in sight, a fired- up band of underdog Wildcats went out and had it in their grasp until a fellow named Chuck Lukinac up and scored three touchdowns in the last four minutes to erase a 16-7 Wildcat lead. Bud Woolery, right, was chosen by the squad as honorary captain of the 1955' football team. He and George Grauberger were selected to be next year's co- captains. A ., tive games of the season until he moved to Rolla, Missouri, If . N . , after the Olathe game. i . . NELSON KIDNVELL-although the lightest man on the . starting eleven at 145 pounds, he was good offensively and defensively. He was also picked on the EKL honorable 1 mention list. CARL CLARK--the heaviest man in the backfield at 175 pounds. This senior was often called upon to pick up a needed yard or two. He was named to honorable mention berths on the EKL and All-City squads. He was a guard on defense. OTTO SCHOLL--the best passer on the squad Scholl's main targets were Dave Rowlands and Bud Woolery. He also led the team in pass interceptions, snaring five enemy aerials. DON EVERSON-a 175-pound senior end, who was nom- inated to honorable mention on All-City and EKL teams. Everson possessed better than average speed and was a good blocker. LARRY SIMS-one of the main cogs on the number two unit, Sims, job was mainly a defensive one. XVALTER HAWKEY-starting quarterback who was cho- sen along with Grauberger and Clark on both the EKL and All-City honorable mention backfields. Did all the punting and played safety on defense. Turned fumble into victory against Wfestport. TACK SPARKS-one of the big surprises of the year, Sparks started the season as a mediocre lineman, but im- proved tremendously as the season went on. and was named to first team, All-Area,All-City and All-EKL. KENNY KERN--didn't play too much at the first of the season but when Brown moved and Hughes moved to cen- ter, Kern capably replaced him. Wfas the biggest guard on the team at 175 pounds. f . DON SWOPE-the biggest boy on the team at 6' 4 , 190. Used his size to good advantage, as he was named to hon- orable mention on the All-City roster and second team EKL. I .,f' 1 'Q I is KENNY KERR-a starter when Rosedale kicked off be- cause he was a good defensive man. Wfas one of the small- est starters at 145 pounds. RAY XX ALLACE-like Kerr, Wallace started when Rose- ag dale was on defense. Did a good job with XY'oolery as line- , backer. --- .1 .sf C.-- .... -3 V-my-m 5:52, -, Lettermen DAVE ARMENTROUT--a junior who saw a lot of action on defense, was quarterback on the reserve team. Although weighing less than 125 pounds, he was a fine defensive halfback. RUSSELL DONLEY-a probable starter next year, Don- ley played both offensive and defensive end. Caught two touchdown passes against Pem-day on the B team. GEORGE GRAUBERGER--a speedy, hard-charging back who reeled several runs of more than 50 yards. Although he weighed only 165 this year, he is expected to be around 175 or 180 next year. Scored 24 points and averaged 8.8 yards per carry. SCOTT HINDS-a speedy back who was best gainer on B squad. Intercepted a pass and ran 35 yards for a touch- down against St. Agnes. DON HUGHES-a transfer from Westport, this guard was turned into a center after the Paola game and started at that position also. BUD WOOLERY--another big surprise this year, Wool- ery was shifted to fullback from end and it turned out a very wise decision, as he led the team in scoring with six touchdowns, twelve conversions, and a field goal. Named to first team on every all-star selection in the area, Wool- ery's ability was not confined to running the ball, as Davies said he was the greatest offensive blocker he had ever seen in high school, and the best defensive man in the city. KENT LAWRENCE-a defensive halfback who saw most of his action at Osawatomie and St. Agnes, but played a lot of B team ball both on offense and defense. JOE BROADUS-one of the three lettering sophomores, Broadus was starting fullback on the B team, second to Hinds in ground gaining, and played mostly defense on the varsity. WINTON PROCH-played mostly in reserve games, he was one of the few bright spots in the Paola game, as he caught two passes late in the game to seriously threaten the Panthers' goal line. CARROLL CATHEY--another sophomore back whose main job was a defensive one. Played some offense at St. Agnes, and will be expected to be a contender for a start- ing spot next year. DAVE ROXVLANDS--leading pass receiver on the squad, was selected to second team all-league and honorable men- tion all-city. BOBBY WOODS-the second heaviest man on the squad at 185, this sophomore will probably start at tackle next year, weighing from 190 to 200 pounds. Spelled Don Swope on those infrequent occasions. 4' A 71' ' ' The B team, above, coached by Dale Henry, won two, lost two, and tied one. A 7-13 loss to Olathe ended a streak of 25 straight wins, dating back to 1950. During this skein, only two touchdowns were scored against them. Wins were over such powers as Wyandotte, Ward, Argentine, Pem-Day, North Kan- sas City, and all the East Kansas league schools. Pic- tured are, bottom row, left to right: Ray Hinton, Rob' ert Kern, jack Trauth, jack Ring, Charles Duer, and Russell Green, middle row: Don Wfilson, Sam Hayes, Gene Clark, John Richecky, Lloyd Strong, top row: Roy jackson, Bill Donley, Bill Grimes, jerry Rap- pold, Allen Wfest, Eddie Chance. Taking over the responsibilities of the junior high basketball teams is J. XV. Rollings, insert. In previous years the task was shared by two men, one taking charge of the eighth grad- ers and one leading the freshmen. Rollings graduated from Wyfandotte, where he was a three-sport star. He was all city eager under Mr. Burns his senior year, 1951. He graduated from Emporia State Teach- ers College in 1955. The 1955-56 freshman team had height, speed, exper- ience, as every man on the starting five saw a lot of action last year. The club took the East Kansas league champion- ship for the first time in many years, handily disposing of every opponent. In all games they were ten and four. Thescoring attack was very well balanced with Gary En- field, Ronnie Huff, john McQuitty, and Bob Kelley often hitting in the double figures. Enfield was high scorer of ff c wa, 5 W' , the season with 148, followed by Ronnie Huff, 110, John McQuitty, 97, and Bob Kelley, 84. The freshman team is pictured above. From left to right are Gary Martin, Bob Kelley, John McQuitty, Gary En- field, Daryl Hughey, Jim Allen, Brian Needham, Ivan Lasho, David Wfatkins, John Boley, and Ronnie Huff. Of these, Hughey, Watkins, and Boley were eighth graders who played part time frosh. The eighth grade squad was not too successful in games won and lost, triumphant in only two outings, but gave evi- dence of some potential players in the coming years. Basketball Summary The best record in Rosedale's cage history was attained this year, for this club made an outstanding 17-1 record. The Wildcats won twelve straight at the beginning of the season before bowing to Wfard, 48-46, in a thriller if there ever was one. Rosedale raced through the East Kansas League, breez- ing past all comers. The only close tilt was at Turner, when the upset-minded Bears fell short by one point. This mark- ed the first time in 10 years that the 'Cats were outright champions in the league. There were several reasons for the outstanding season. Rosedale had a tall team, usually consisting of Bud Wool- ery, 5'11, Bob Tague, 6'2, Robert Brown, 6'5, Otto Scholl 6'0, and Don Everson, 6'1. The Wfildcats averaged over 60 points per game, while holding the opposition to an av- erage of 45 points per game. The team also was an exper- ienced group, as all but one starter, Robert Brown, were lettermen. Don Swope, 6'4 reserve center, also lettered last year. The team showed an exceptional amount of hustle and drive, as Phog Allen's famed fighting benchn theory was taught emphatically by Coach Heit holt. There was never a quiet moment on the bench, as those who were not playing were doing their part to aid victory by keeping up a steady stream of encouragement.. Whenever a turn of events would favor Rosedale, the fighting bench would give out with a standing ovation. Rosedale had a well balanced scoring team which pos- sessed a big scoring threat at every position. Although Bud Woolery was usually high scorer in a game, he was never a one-man show. In every game of the season, at least two Wildcats scored in the double figures, and often there were four. Add to this the best defense in the league, and one can readily see why the club made such a fine record. The B team, although not nearly as spectacular as the varsity, came up with a fine record. This was Mr. Henry's first year at this position, and he guided the team to its best year since 19 Harold Straughn and Bill Donley kept the score book and 'mistake chart for all the basketball games. Pictured above is Mr. Roscoe Brown, who gave up the cage reins this year after 31 years at the helm. He had former- ly held a coaching position at one school longer than any coach in the area. Brown pro- duced many great stars and successful teams. His teams have nearly always been among the best in this part of the state, and the 1956 edition was no exception. Clark Tygart eclipsed one of Rose- dale's oldest records - the pole vault. The former record had been held for more than a decade. He also entered in the discus, javelin and relays. The 1956 Rosedale track and field squad had another successful year, being contenders for the EKL title. The last several East Kansas track battles have been betvv een Turner and Rosedale, the latter winning four of the last five years. 'In 1953, the last time Rosedale did not take the crown. Turner won the cham- pionship. That year Rosedale won the sixteen events, far more than share, since six other teams were compet A ing, but lacked the depth to win. h Pictured on these pages are sex en who lettered last year, as the letters li not been distributed at thc time of writinv Another letterman Don Eserson not present for the pictures. Some of the boys in this group were members of last year's cinder squad, but did not meet the requirements for a letter. Among these were Larry Sims, Kent.Lawrence, George Grauberg- er, Eddie Chance, and Russell Donley. Several boys who were out for the first time this year were expected to strengthen the team consider- ably. This was one of the largest turnouts in recent years. The reason for this is that encouragement was given to all boys going out for football next year to go out for track this spring. Pictured are, front row, left to right: Dave Row- lands, Winton Proch, Larry Sims, Nelson Kidwell, Dave Armentrout, Carroll Cathey, and Kent Law- rence. Middle row, left to right: Jack Trauth, Bud Woolery, james Dickerson, Manfred Alves, Sam Hayes, Robert Kern, joe Broadus, and Richard Lar- son. These men supplied the depth which had been lacking the past few years. In previous seasons, only five or six who did not letter remained our for track all year. Ten of these boys are sophomores who lettered or scored on the freshman team last year, and some of them posted good records last year. Among these are Bobby Woods, discus and shot, James Dickerson, high jump, Manfred Alves, middle distances, and Joe Broadus, dashes. ' 4-f-.ff 2355 if ' 5 ' gi 6 1? ,gm AL X qw The freshman team, shown above, should have a good season. Pictured below is the golf team, which was fav- ored to win the EKL crown. Last year the team took second with four sophomores and a junior to an all senior Osawatomie aggregation. Rosedale has all its team back, and will lose only one through gradua- tion this year, Richard Briscoe. On the back row are Dave Rowlands, Roger Bris- coe, Frank Collins, Richard Briscoe, and Coach Ros- coe Brown. Kneeling are jack Hinshaw, joe Spencer, and Jack Mock. If any records were kept to determine which schools have turned out the most professional golf- ers, Rosedale would rank at or near the top in the state or even the nation, as twelve of Mr. Brown's golfers have entered the pay ranks.
