This is the one place where a fellow can get to himself and away from the cruel, hard life of a high school and simply dream of the world as he would like to have it. All kidding aside the library is the place to go when you really have to get some work in. at 1' The Music Stopped and all because of one little sour note. Mr. Brown and the orchestra members are shown going through the paces on a new number in preparation for one of their many school perform- ances. JH? iju 'I H1 1 'X 1 '.r ., 1 urfahj -J .pf The i inf kwa: -4 k :N is ga -WAC' gf Qt Y Bottom row, L to R Charles Teegarden, Bill Tierney, second row Walter Creager, E W Crates, Lester Minturn, Earl Smith, Max Sorden, Raymond Enderle, third row Chuck Serslev, Bill Roberts, Dan Ritter, Harry Lohrnegel, Virgil Dye, Lynn Winslow, and Holland Wright With a season's record of five wins, two losses,and two ties, Rosedale's Wild cats gained fourth place in the NEK lea gue and a tie with Ward high school for the mythical city championship, in their 1943 football campaign The first two games, Westport and tur ner, both non league, were victories for Rosedale Lynn Winslow scored the only touchdown of the game and Bill Tierney added the extra point for the win over the Tigers The following week Rosedale kept the Turner Bears outside the Wild cat 50 and romped to a 15 to 0 decision Ray Enderle and Tierney scored on runs of 33 and l2 yards respectively In the first league contest,Lawrence's too powerful Lions,led by Cliff Mc onald, passed and ran to a 35 13 triumph Rose dale's only other defeat came at the hands of the Olathe Eagles After out playing their opponents all through the game the Wildcats fell victmms to a trick play and six points, which was the margin of victory The first league win for Rosedale was at the expense of the Atchison Redmen. Coming from behind in the fourth quarter rally Coach Art Lawrence's eleven scored twice on runs of 60 and 70 yards by Win slow The final score was Rosedale 20, Atchison 12 Washington Rural fell to Rosedale by a score of 20 to 6 on the Rural field Tierney scored twice and Ed Minter, reserve back, scored on a pass interception An underdog Rosedale team battled the Shawnee Mission Indians to a 0 to 0 tie in the fifth league tilt The main Wild cat threat was a pass interception by Tierney, who carried to the Indian 52 The Wildcats were stopped on the fifteen by a fumble A pass play after a long drive netted a first down on the Rosedale eight as the game ended In the twenty second renewal of their rivalry Rosedale defeated its intra city rival, Argentine, 13 0 Tierney scored the first six points on a line buck from 12 yards out Enderle added the point In the last quarter Chuck Serslev carried to the 20 on a 25 yard run, and Winslow went off tackle for the counter on the next down U i s Y '1 . 1 t V, Q 0 ,4 J. t I A - . 0 ' , - , I - 5 A 1 I ' -vw 7' 0. , . . , T . C - - I O C I O - . a I ' t .- , o . e C - - . - , - e ' - ' Q I - e o Large crowds attended all of Rosedale's home games the past season and were not disappointed in the brand of action they wit nessed The Westport Tigers brought a large number of follow ers and spectators at that con test numbered aproylmately 2,600 and al o topped the attendance mark of the home season Many service men, graduates, and former students of Rosedale were seen along with many other visitors and among them were ath letic stars of the ,ast The student body had good representa tion at all games and the pep club, sponsored by Miss Esther Nicklin, and the band directed by M Everett Brown gave the team excellent support The band also entertained at ralitimes, marcrlng and maneuvering on the field George Bell, were guests of the club and were treated to an elk dinner at the Gould hotel before the award was made Charles Teegaroen and Bill Tierney, junior co captains, pre sented the trophy to the school in a special assembly Letter awards were also given at that time Ward high was a close contest and with Rosedale for the honor but the better season record of the Wildcats won the decision Teegarden, Tierney, Earl Smith, Dan Ritter, and Lynn Winslow were given places on the various city all star teams 'I2 Two seniors, a junior, one sophomore and one freshman in spired pep SHG enthusiasm cheers at pep assemblies and all football and basketball games durlng 1945 44 Supporting Bettye Phill1ps,head cheerleader who had two years of previous experience, were Marguerite Reiter, another senior, Pat Parrott, a junior, Don Smith, sophomore, and Robert Hawkes, a freshman A good part of the success of the pep club was due to the cheerleaders Their ability of getting the student body to sup port the team to the fullest was The crowning event of the '43 football season was the awarding of the city chamaionship and a beautiful trophy by the Kiwanis club of Kansas City, Kansas The twenty 1ettermen,ten senlors,n1ne juniors, and one sophomore, to gether with student manager Gil bert Meyer, Principal D F Bent lev, Coaches Art Lawrence and . L I 44- p Cyiif 51 U 49 -.f Although the glee c ub was quite small this year compared to otker years it did some rerarvable work At the beg inning of the second serester the sen lor boys' physical education program took most of tre boys, leaving only two But these two could still be heard, so work went on as before Because of this situation the girls did some trree part work dur'ng the fear The highlight of the year toward which the glee club worked was the Musical March ol Time in Four Acts' iven on April 1 Act one was the Sinvln' Gatherln ' act two was the Folk Songs of Other uations , act three was the Music of the Gay Lineties , act four was the Music of Today , and the finale was America, the Beautiful with an orchestral accompaniment under the direction of Mr Milo Finley Other activities included the Sunday evening program at the Roanoke Bapti t church for the church's community Gocd Friday service, appearance on Parent Teacher programs, and assisting in the annual Thanksgiving and Christmas pro grams given in school assemblies Those who appeared as soloists during the year were Bettye Phillips, soprano, June Clark, alto,Charles Serslev, tenor, and Earl Stephenson, bass Earline Haz litt also took a solo part once or twice during the year.
