The Cougar football team won the Falls County Championship. The student body showed undying spirit all year long. 6 Good Times During those long school days, students spent much time studying, learning, and reading lessons, but they also found time to have fun. These enjoyable moments are cherished because they were times spent with special people — friends! 11 We Love Our Cougar Team! Everyone cheered their best to back the Superstar Cougars to a winning season. Pep rallies were filled with enthusiasm and pep to boost the spirits of the coaches and players. The spirit shown throughout the football season paid off in the final contest of the season; the R-L Cougars defeated the Cameron Yoeman, State 3- AAA Champions. Many skits were performed this year to build up spirit. The award-winning Cougar band and twirlers, dazzling Coogettes, and spirited Cheerleaders en- couraged pep for the Cougars. 13 Precious Moments Shared Precious and few are the days spent in high school. During the 180 days of school, many events take place. Each day has different happen- ings with different emotions. We, the 1982 Cougar Tales staff, hope that this edition will bring back many of the exciting, joyful, humorous, and rewarding moments shared at R-L. We also hope that in the years to come, this edition will always help in reminiscing the best years of life — High School. The season began with a sur- prising 34-6 victory over an old rival, the Marlin Bulldogs, br- inging home the Falls County Championship trophy for the first time in eight years. The Cougars went into district with a 4-1 record, gaining another sur- prising victory by defeating district favored Caldwell 37-6. A week later the Cougars hosted the Hearne Eagles. But victory was denied the Cougars when Hearne scored with twelve seconds left on the clock and pulled ahead to win the game 17-19. The Cougars ended the season with another surprising victory over our biggest rival, the Cameron Yoemen. This vic- tory was important because it was the first time in ten years we have beaten the Yoemen, and we were the only team to defeat the state 3-AAA cham- pions this year. Kenneth Travis ended up with a total of 985 yards rushing and an average of over 8 yards per carry. Greg Knox gained 1577 yards passing, threw 15 touchdown passes, and gained 331 yards rushing, averaging over 4 yards per carry. Bubba Jackson rushed 25 times for 204 yards and Curtis Whitfield gained 280 yards on 22 catches and scored 4 touchdowns. Coach Kent Bachtel com- mented on the season: Everybody did a real good job. Then the Cougars traveled to Cameron. Fin- ding themselves in the territory of their arch-rival, the Cougars could do nothing right. A night full of fouls and techs caused the Cougars to play the final three minutes with only four players on the court. The Cougars pulled themselves together quickly to defeat Caldwell and Hearne to win the first round of district. The second half of district was not as encouraging for the Cougars. The Cougars only victory was over Hearne. Their first chance for revenge against Cameron came one night in Travis. Trailing throughout the whole game, the Coogs came from behind to lead by one point with seconds left on the clock. But again the clock ran out with the scoreboard in Cameron’s favor. Revenge was not to come until later. As the regular season came to an end. the Coogs found themselves in the T.J.C. gym playing for the district title against none other than the Cameron Yoemen. The Coogs. deter- mined not to let Cameron defeat them again, pulled ahead in the last few seconds to win the district title and defeat the Yoemen. The following week the Coogs were back at T.J.C. to battle the Manor Mustangs. With three minutes left on the clock Manor was 11 points ahead. Loyal R-L fans witnessed an unreal comeback in which, the Coogs once again pulled ahead to win in the last few seconds. The Bi-District title was theirs. 'What’s happenin’?’’ Let’s play keep away!’’ Break time! The next week the Coogs traveled to Brenham to play Dibol for the Regional title. Dibol took an early lead, but the Cougars' efforts for another miraculous comeback were not as successful as they were the last time. The Cougars' dreams for the state title ended in Brenham as they were defeated 64-59. Head basketball coach Jack Arn- wine commented. Overall we had a real good year. Box 482 Chilton, Texas 76632 Phone 1-817-546-3256 188 189 At 8:30 a.m. on August 31st the bell sounded: the alarm Announcing the 1981—82 school year had just been born. Each student wandered looking for his homeroom And upon arriving waited for his class schedules that would initiate the first big boom. Oh! the homework of English, science, and history Certainly turned the cheer into one big misery. Then as the days flew past the Cougar team opened the '81 football season with one big blast. They defeated the Marlin Bulldogs by a score of 34-7 and tell me those Coogs didn’t feel like they were in heaven. The Falls County Champs told the Cougar fans that wasn’t the end of their victory plans. The mighty Coogs plowed over Reicher, Fairfield, Rockdale, and even put a big blow to the State 3-A Champions — Cameron Yoe. Oh, it was nice and somewhat great that the awesome R-L Cougars defeated the team that won state. The pep rallies showed pep and lots of steam Of course they did, because we loved our Cougar team. Oh, the glory of the Cougar victories were suddenly snowed over by the six weeks test miseries! The cries and pleas of “Oh, Mrs. Allen, my report card! Did I really deserve a fat Then after the students could cry no more, they decided to get up off their knees and quit crawling on the floor. Then in a fast, fast hurry came the days for the turkey to scurry. It was Thanksgiving Day! Oh yes, indeed, giving R-L students no books or assignments to read. Then as December came creeping in, it was time for the Cougar basketball teams to win. As the ball dribbled and fans said, Go!” Bells rung in the halls that sparkled with mistletoe While jolly St. Nicholas chimed “Ho! Ho! Ho!” The new 1982 year came bouncing in and the Cougars continued their streak to win. Oh how wonderful it did look, the day the Mighty Coogs beat the roundballers from Snook. The Cougarettes were another team to watch 'Cause they surely played top-notch! Right before Cupid could pull back his arrow, The ground soon was carpeted by flakes of white snow. No school day after day, gave the students time for lots of play. The snow-covered days couldn't be dull 'cause soap opera fans could catch up on “General Hospital.” The snowmen melted and fell to the ground delivering the messages to kids — get ready, you're school bound! jack Frost continued to nip noses and chill red faces and the Student Council Posters and Scrapbook won 1st places. The roundballers continued their fight; till they whipped Cameron Yoe that February night! Oh, it was another hard victory that the Yoe had to choke down and swallow. Seems it made their stomaches feel deep and hollow. Don’t fret Cameron Yoe — Manor also had to play the loser’s role! Down bv a total of eleven, the Coogs looked straight up toward heaven and said their prayers. The last minute and a half enabled the Coogs to have the last laugh. On to Regional the Coogs did go, but found the Diboll Lumberjacks weren’t that slow. A few questionable calls and cases of bad nerves left the Cougars defeated but with pride a true winner deserves. It certainly wasn’t any mistake that the next week should just so happen to be the awaited spring break. The fine-sounding Cougar band Won UIL 2st Divisions. Ain't that grand! Not only did the band deserve a big hand, also the scientists that worked on projects and planned and planned. “The Ugly Duckling — One-Act Play was the best one presented in District that early spring day. Play won honors! It surely did and gave Rosebud-Lott a chance for the Area bid. Baseball and track got into full swing As the flowers and birds showed nature's signs of blooming spring. With the closing of the '81-82 school year many flashback at all the laughter and tears. Students found ways to stay out of jams just so long as they wouldn't have to take semester exams. As the month of May slipped away Seniors ended their final school days. These days were somewhat sad because all that was left were many memories that everyone had. Oh, yes the year was so much fun because we could see how far we had come. On May 28 — Graduation Night Seniors geared themselves up to take their last flight. After the speeches and diplomas had been read, The Seniors began taking steps toward the future that waited ahead. And few final moments, when the Class of ‘82 got to be together There was no time for ifs, ands, or whys — just enough time for the final good-byes! Thanks for the Memories! Mr. Roper, the Cougar Tales’ staff would like to thank you for being a part of our fond memories at Rosebud-Lott. Since 1975, R-L had the honor of being associated with a patriotic, intelligent, impartial and understanding man — Mr. Vic Roper. Thank you, Mr. Roper, for being such a good friend. 192
