This tradition is based on knowledge of the speed with which tra- ditions and cultures have moved in this area. From the civiliza- tion ofthe native nomads, who lived off the bison, through the period of great ranching enterpriser to irrigation of smaller farm unitsg to the larger units operated on a mechanical basisg less than a single century has elapsed. We are now entering another era of human effort which became effective with the emergence into orbital space, this past year. This community has made contributions, through its school, to the leadership of our state and nation, in keeping with the tradi- tion of one of the earliest Montana settlements. The student body has shown its determination to keep to the traditions, but has ac- cepted the need to honor those customs in new wayS. It has beena pleasure, as well as a new educational experience for me and the rest of the school staff to work with the SIUd6UCS Of this school.
