School District No, 5 has two school boards. Ed Bott, Fred Luh- man and William A, Smith comprise the grade school board. These three men along with Frank Lange from the Rosebud Creek district and J ack Dawson from the Carterville district make up the five man high school board, It is the responsibility of these men to see that the school functions properly. It is an endless and many times a thankless task to see that there are teachers, books, supplies and other necessities to meet the educational requirements of the community. These men do their best but their efforts aren't always appreciated. This past year found them especially busy as the new high school was put into operation, - 2, It is a distinct privilege for the Class of '55 to be the first to graduate from the new high school building. The pride that they have in it should be reflected in cleaner, better, stronger, and more useful careers, They say that overcoming obstacles im- proves the stamina, Goodness knows we have had them, Tests and observation com- bine to demonstrate to the teachers, who have worked with the Class of '55, to corroborate the verdict of the principal that the class is unusually capable in many respects, Therefore it is reasonable to expect that they will achieve an unusual a- mount of success, With the aid of former classes and under -graduates they have put Rosebud High School on the map in a very creditable manner. Let us not selfishly attempt to misconstrue this statement. Let us not neglect to give credit where credit is due. Many people also serve who only stand and wait. Contributory factors in the success of a school are such minor matters as regularity of attendance, dependable behavior, conscien- tious study, and preparation of daily work, Winning recognition in any field by any group or the school as a whole, involves a great deal of planning and a great deal of conscientious effort. The ambition to sur- pass other individuals, groups, classes, or schools is commendable. To surpass one's own past is the thing that really counts, Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report, if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think of these things, With best regards, W l X X THURMAN GROOM: He drives the VERN STRUTHERS: The driver of Rosebud Creek Bus. the Hathaway Bus. After enrolling in high school, we met with our ad- visor, Mr. Fenner Lytle, and elected officers for the year, Janet Holmes was chosen President, with Sonja Dawson as Vice President. Other officers were: Secretary, Carol Bateyg and Ma1'Y Lange, Reporter. Besides the officers, the class consisted of: Norma Artz, Geneva Beyl, Tom Carranco, Cheryl Coate, Vivian Coon, Delsie Draper, Socorro Covarrubias, Belen Gandara, Gary Harken, Sarah Junge, Donna Popp, Russell Penner, Fred Tetschner, Thad Turner, and Hazel Wilson, Much to our dismay, the first thing the sophomores did was initiate us, but that night they helped the situation by giving us a party. Our classmate, Janet Holmes, was elected Car- nival Queen, During o11r Sophomore year, our class, under the sponsorship of Charles Mitchell, elected Mary Lange, Presidentg Sonja Dawson, Vice Presidentg Socorro Covarrubias, Secretary-Treasurerg and Carol Batey as Reporter, We lost two members that year, Delsie Draper and Sarah lunge, but Charles Maslowski enrolled so that kept our number at 18, That year we initiated the Fresh- men and gave them a party, Our candidate for Carnival Queen was Mary Lange, who was runner- up, In our Junior Year, with Mr, Mitchell as sponsor again, we elected as officers: President, Tom Carranco,Vice President, Fred Tetschnerg Thad Turner, Secretary -Treasurer, and Russell Penner, Reporter. We did a lot to raise money for the coming prom and Banquet, We sold pop and candy at the football, basketball and baseball games, and also gave several dances. We en- tertained the Seniors with a beautiful Prom, with Trees as our theme, We gave them a banquet also, held at the Met Cafe in Miles City. Our play was Hillbilly Weddin', which was a huge success and a riot. That year we lost several classmates: Donna Popp, Geneva Beyl, Socorro Covarrubias, Charles Maslowski, Cheryl Coate, and Hazel Wilson. Only one new student was added, Bill Poe, Once more our class gained royalty, with Carol Batey as Carnival Queen, and Sonja Dawson as Homecoming Queen, As we entered the halls of R. H. S. in our Senior year there were thirteen of us, but through- out the year we lost three boys: Gary Harken, Fred Tetschner, and Bill Poe. This left three boys and seven girls, and Mr. Schmidt was our new sponsor. Officers elected were as follows: Presi- dent, Sonja Dawsong Vice President, Janet Holmes, Secretary, Carol Batey, Treasurer, Norma Artz, and Reporter, Mary Lange. We put out the paper the first semester. The class play was Drums of Death, which was a mystery, It too was a grand success. We had an extended skip day, in which we traveled to Great Falls, Helena, and Bozeman, Foul- of the Class attended High School Week at Bozeman, April 28-30, The Juniors put on a prom for us May 7, with Evening in Paris as the theme, The class colors chosen were shades of blue, and the flower was the red rose. The motto was It takes a few clouds to make a beautiful sunset, The Junior- Senior banquet was held at the Met Cafe in Miles City on May 15, as was Baecal Holmes was elected Homecoming Queen, and she was also Prom Queen, Sonja Dawson was run- ner-up for Carnival Queen, We ended four wonderful years at R. At initiation we were sights to be seen And now as seniors we say good-bye. Hair of red and five feet nineg Thad Turner with his little green jeep, He never gets to school on time But nobody can call Carrots a creep. Carol Batey's plans are madeg In California we'll find her in June. The light of her diamond won't fade And on the piano she can play any ole tune Now this girl with dark brown hair Is Janet Holmes, a tall quiet gal. Her thoughts are always high in the air And to everyone she's a pal. Tommy Carranco, in sports is hard to beat. He is noticed when coming through a door. A guy all the gals like to meet Especially a little blonde right next door. Mary Lange is short and sweet For a lot of fun she's always ready. In school work she can't be beat, But listen boys - she has a steady, Sonja Dawson's a gal with a smile Sweet sixteen all her senior year. She'll be fancy free for quite a while But having fun, never you fear. Vivian Coon, the shyest one, and Is also the shortest in the class. She's glad her school days are done For she can throw her books away alas! Next comes Touchdown, six feet tall Always teasing day or night. He was also sharp in basketball, Russell Penner is quite all right, Belen Gandara, is a dark eyed lass. To her studies she is always true For she is never late for class. With a sense of humor to get her through, Happy-go-lucky is Norma Artz She likes to travel far and near. She never practices at breaking hearts And is glad that school's end is here. F9 As I looked down from my airplane window I saw the water below, and I began to think back 20 years ago, when I was in high school, and I wondered how much things and people had changed in all those years, I thought of looking up all my old classmates, now thatl had completed my foreign cruise. I was sure, my husband wouldn't care, I happened to notice a stewardess step through the door of the plane. Her face seemed familiar, yet I couldn't recognize her offhand, I caught her staring back at me, and suddenly we both recognized each other, It was Mary Lange, my old classmate, What are you doing here? I asked her, very much surprised. She told me she was chief stewardess of T. W.A. now, and traveled all over the world check- ing planes and helping train new stewardesses, We talked for awhile of old times, and all too soon it was time for the plane to land, I stepped from the plane, and while waiting for my chauffeur, I saw a very distinguished man look- ing over the plane. He came a bit closer, and suddenly cried out, Why, if it isn't Sonja Dawson! An old school chum of mine. It was Tommy Carranco, who was now the President of the Holly Sugar Com- pany. We decided to go to dinner together, and were ready to climb into the car, when Tommy called a man over, He was carrying a brief case, and looked quite familiar, This man is my chief researcher, Tommy said, Guess who it is, Why, it was Russell Penner! Believe it or not, another old classmate. Both men told me they were married, and were in New York on business and vacation with their families. Russell had just completed a new method of making nylon stockings out of beets! I asked about the rest of the class of '55, and Tommy said he knew Norma Artz was Secretary of State, and was in Europe at the dme, and that Janet Holmes was private nurse to the famous Mr. Vanderbilt, and was vacationing in Hawaii at the time, We were driving along Wall Street, taking in the sights, when a man came charging out of the dia- mond cutter's building, and yelled at us to stop, He wore diamond cuff-links, tie clasp, rings, and a diamond studded watch. Why, it was Mr. Schmidt, our senior class sponsor! He owned most of the dia- mond rnines of the world now, and said it was a bit different from coaching, although he was the manager of the New York Yankees, He was the father of 10 girls, and still no boys. He said Miss Kober finally got her millionaire, and lived in Texas where they had most of their oil wells. Mr, Norman was head of the F, B,I, , and Mr, Perry had inherited 15 million dollars and had retired from teaching. We went on our way, and were driving along Madison Square, when the driver came to a screaming halt. Who should be stopped ahead, right in the middle of the road, but Carol Batey, who had her head under the hood of her Cadillac, Carol was now the wife of a Navy Admiral, and was having trouble with the automatic eye in her car. We invited Carol to come to dinner with us, As we walked into the restaurant, I ran smack into a lady coming out of the door, in a great hurry, I mumbled apologies, and realized it was Belen Gandara. Belen was an owner of the largest cosmetic factory in the country, and had just been on her annual world trip to find out the latest cosmetic styles. She spent most of her time traveling, she said, and came to New York on business quite often. She said Vivian Coon was a private beauty operator of several famous beauty stars, and had a big mansion in Hollywood. Belen was in a hurry, so she couldn't dine with us. I was studying the menu, when I noticed, Turner Steaks - the Best in the World, printed on it, I recognized the name as one of my classmates, and wondered if it would mean Thad Turner, Just then who should walk up but Thad himself, He was here to try out his steaks, he said. He made the comment that they got a lot smaller the farther east they got, but not bad at all. Thad was in New York on vaca- tion, but was ready to go home, because the city's noise bothered him. He said Rosebud now had a popu- lation of 5000, and was a great stockyard center, mostly for his cattle of course. We finished the dinner, and found it all too quickly gone, Each of us went our way, and thought of the good old school days, but were quickly caught up in the busy web of our own lives. The seniors went to Great Falls, Helena, and Bozeman for their Skip Day. If WHS quite a trip as when they hit Bozeman it started to snow and Montana had its worst snow storm in years. They became SHOW bound and finally had to come home by train. They did visit the Deaf and Blind Home in Great Falls. In Helena, they visited QW ig Q Q g the Capitol, and the Russell Museum oi Mon- tana History, They ate steaks for a while but at the end of their six day jaunt they were eating hamburgers and enjoying them. Mortarboards and Gowns The Junior-Senior Prom held on May 7, was decorated in the Evening In Parisf theme. Sidewalk Cafes, a blue ceiling with stars, fountain and Paris silhouetted at night were featured, Delbert was named King and he crowned Janet Queen, They led the Grand March at Twelve, Baccalaureate was held Sunday, May 15, in the Rosebud Gymnasium with Reverend Galour of Forsyth as guest speaker, His mes- sage bore the title False Values, After Baccalaureate the Junior-Senior Banquet was held in the Met Cafe at Miles City. Frankie Lange gave the Welcome and Sonja gave the Response, Dan giving a toast? On May 19, ten Seniors received their diplomas at Commencement Exercises. Guest Speaker for the evening was Dr. Her- bert Hynes of Rocky Mountain College, The Girls' Glee Club sang two numbers and Sonja, Carol and Janet played a piano trio Chopin'sl Polonaise. Norma gave the Salutatory speech and Mary gave the Vale- dictory. It is what people do when they don't work that makes them sick and others tired, j Q41 Material and breaks are often the secret, At the same time it is a well-established fact that even If the horses can run there must be a jockey to steer them and make the breaks. 151 Community spirit--we're behind you win or lose--is indicative of a splendid sports community. As a final adieu, my hat is off to those boys who can say, I have obeyed all training rules, I have a particular desire to give those individuals all the breaks on making future squads. Beiry, A, Pabolo. , I bud to attend the 1954 Girls' State. It was held at Rocky Mountain College ill Billings 111116 14-21. The purpose of this gathering was to instill in the minds of young girls a better undertanding of our government, and teach them the fundamentals through actual procedure, Every moment of our time was filled with activities. We first went through all the voting and holding of office of city govern- ment. I was precinct chairman the first day, in charge of the voting. Next we went on to county business, and the commissioners and school superintendent, and other county officers were elected, I served as an election judge for this election. Between each election, we attended meetings and assemblies, where various officers worked out each phase of office, Each night we went to some show prepared for our enjoyment, One night we heard a kitchen band, the next night some singers, and many of us participated in the talent show. The state election was the high light of elections, and the governor and all her officers were chosen, In the primary elections, each party elected their candidates, The govemor was a girl from Sun River, Valeen Tippets. She was a wonderful speaker, and could chill one with her talks. I ran for, and was elected, railroad and public service commissioner. Previous to the elections, a cam- paign picnic was held, and everyone had a hilarious time, The next day we elected the Girls' Nation delegates. The week was over in a too short time, it seemed, and everyone went home with a new appre- ciation and knowledge of our democracy. The friends we all left behind are lifetime friends. I consider being able to attend Girls' State one of the greatest honors I could have, and only wish every girl had the opportunity to attend, I thank everyone who made it possible for me to go, I shall never forget it, Mary Lange ZW' :cue Being elected, and very fortunate to attend Montana Boys' State in 54, at Dillon, Montana, was a wonderful experience, Boys' State was jam-packed with a schedule consisting of govern- mental campaigns. The campaigns consisted of electing and cam- paigning for city, county, parties, and state officials. During the nine day experience we traveled to one of the oldest known cities in Montana, Virginia City. Three or four times a day, speakers lectured to us on governmental practices and our place in the world of tomorrow. I was fortunate enough to be elected as the fire chief and clerk of election. In the practice of our State Functions, we elected Jerry Cummins, as our Montana Boys' State Governor. In ou.r leisure time of one ho11r per day, we all played some of our favorite games and played against other cities, In the last couple of days we had a Boys' State talent night, in which many of us played instruments, sang songs, or gave skits. The talent night which was said to be one of the best ever held at Boys' State. The last night which was Saturday, we were given a Governors Ball, so we could dance and enjoy the night with the girls of Dillon, and Butte, The next morning we got our Boys' State pins, and we were bid farewell as we headed for home. Boys' State as a whole, was very educational, and one of the best methods of electing officials, in which it is actually done. Its procedure was done to every point of view. I am very glad to say that Boys' State was a very nice , trip, andl sure made a lot of friends and got along very well. I wish to thank each person for their action put forth to have sent me to Boys' State, and I wish that each and every boy w0u1d be for.. tunate to attend Montana Boys' State, Tommie Carranco I had the wonderful fortune to be chosen as delegate from Rose- X Ig ., it U , ,, E 5 ,+ ' V . h. az 5 ' i ig a X, n 2 f if n X , a ' '15 as as if .
