lf'lfLd0L ing agem Carrying a heavy schedule of 26 games during the I9-48-49 campaign, the Bus VVoodward coached quintet sal- vaged I5 in the win column while dropping ll. Xlore emphasis was LIIYCIW to tht- larger city and county teatns last season as the Crusaders received Class A competition for the second year. Not without glory. Rosary placed .1 duo of Rasketeers among the first ten high scoring players of the city as Capt. -lim Scanlon and Tony Purpura ranked fifth and ninth with 315 and 233 points respectively. But honors did not cease there. The Allalndependent selections claimed the dynamic twosome on the first team. Closing the season with hattle from Linden-NlcKinley, hope for survival in the Class A Districts fell short in the Coliseum as the Panthers grahhed an opportune 44-42 count. Opening night proved successful as a slow starting Rosary aggregation rang down the curtain on Zanesville St. Nicholas, 36-I6. Following its initial win, the quintet nioyed to Summit Station where they handed the homeftowners the short end of a 45-27 score. A flashy five staged a repeat performance as Rosary returned to a 32-26 tally over the Zanesville Flyers. while dropping its first of four games to the Linden Panthers 39-29 one week later. It was rough sledding as Rosary took to the road and encountered a stubborn St. Marys five of Marion. Overcoming a I2 point deficit, Rus XYoodward's hoys caught fire and when the smoke cleared, tht- scoreboard had tht- Rose and Rlack on top 32-30. After marking four victories and one loss. tht- Crusaders hit Holy liantily Raiders hard with a powerful 42-IT blow. counting five for six. Rut the unavoidahle slump was due as the Rose and Rlaclt suffered through defeats at the hands of Greenfield. 46-44: llillshoro, 58-241 North. 4024. and ulayerly in a lireath-taking spec- tacle of' 40-39.
