October 25 tooly the Rosary eleven to Centrafs field to engage the scrappy lloly Family team. After a hard fought battle. through muck. mire, and the lloly Family eleven. the Crusaders emerged on the long end of a 14-O score. The T. Dfs were scored by Don Murphy and Dick Lieb. Sonny Wlile accounted for the converf sions. After the game the Alumni Association sponsored a home-coming dance and the tradif tional trophy. the Bronze Derby. was awarded to the victors. The next game. November l. was played at XVest jefferson. The great line play of the for ward wall and the accurate passing of quarter- back Don Murphy enabled the Crusaders to hand their opponents a stinging defeat. The sensational receiving of end lim Devaney and Sonny VVile accounted for all of Rosaryfs T. Dfs. The final score was Rosary 25, VVest jefferson 9. aaa 'lihe football team of Freshmen and Sopho- mores piled up an enviable record this past sea son. A hard-fighting aggregation. they played teams much larger than they. They lost only one game, and only tuo teams scored upon them. ilihe smashing running and rugged hloclying of Elmer llerbert malye him an outstanding Rosary 21, Arlington 18 Rosary 7, Mifflin U Rosary lg. Grandview 0 On November 8 at South lligh Field. Rosary engaged a highly favored St. Mary's eleven. il'he game was played almost entirely in St. Maryis territory. Three times Rosary was inside the Ramblers' ten yard line but failed to score. Only once. in the closing minutes of the game. did St. Marys threaten the Rosary goal. After holding the Ramblers for four successive downs on the two yard line. the Crusaders tooly pos' session of the ball and the final gun sounded. ilihe score? 0-O. The football season came to an ollicial close on the night of Uecember 16, when the Athletic Association feted the football team at the South- ern Hotel. Paul Bixler was the main speaker. Short talks were given by hlsgr. Murphy and Judge Rodney Rossg Mr. Herbert Hillebrandt. president of the Athletic Association. was toast! master. 6? man,+our potential threat to future Crusader opponents. Much credit for their successful campaign must be attributed to the coaching of Carry Kane. a graduate of '45, Carry had the full cooperation of all the boys. and mutual hard worly has given them the record they hold today. Sinee the fentral Catholic League. dishanded during the war, has not as yet heen reorganized, Rosary played an independent schedule. The Crusaders opened their eampaign at Cireleville, putting up a terrilie hattle hellore going down to defeat. ll-O. For a while it was nip and tuelt. with most of the hattle heing played on the midfstripes. but Cireleville. taking advantage of the hrealxs, scored tw iee. ln the seeond game of the season, Rosary a11nihilated the highly favored Ciahanna eleven at Ciahanna. The frusaders moved quieldy. seoring a touehdown heliore Ciahanna ev en louehed the hall. ln tl1e seeond period, fhuelv Pfister hloelyed a punt, setting up lTosary's see ond seore. lt the linal gun it was 19-7. In this game, we lost our eaptain and lull-haelv. .loe XYUTILISI, who was out for the rest of the season with a flvnee injury. The next Friday tools Rosary to Xlarion to play an aggressive St. Xlarys eleven, The lrisl1 proved too mueh for the Crusaders and won hy' Wm the seore ol' NO. .Xgain llosary lost another player to that growing list ol' injuries, Paul XVeegie Myers. Rosary invaded l lamilton illownship on a eold. rainy night. to emerge the vietor hy a seore ol' 356. Sonny XVile. playing his usual hrand ol' hall, seored four touehdowns and an extra point. The highpoint ol' interest oeeurred when hall' haelv liill Nott lialved a punt three yards hehind his own goal and raeed IU5 yards to eross llosaryis goal for llllIDllIOl1iS onlv tallv. ln this game we m . , lost the services ol' Chuela Pfister. The highlight ol' every Rosary lioothall season is the traditional tilt with St. Charles. This BLHITQS liray at Bexley liield on Uetoher l8 gave the Rosary rooters everything hut the right seore. The Iinal seore was 180 in the farolians favor hut the game was mueh eloser than the seore indieates. Two ol' the St. Charles T. Dfs eame on intereepted passes and many of Rosaryis gains were eallcd haelt heeause of penalties. ln the payoll' the farolians proved to he too fast and too shility lor the frusaders. Rosary lost 11IlUlllL'I' player to that ever growing list of III' iured. Phil Sansone was DUI lor the rest of the seaso11 with a ltnee injury.
