ROSARY COLLEGE ARCHIVES RIVER FOREST, ILLINOIS Rosary: it reaches back in its cultural traditions to the thirteenth century, and in its aspirations for into the future. -YEAR OSARY COLLEGE IVER FOREST, ILLINOIS 1944-45 ication To Our Lady of the Rosary, Queen of the Anqels and of Men, who appeared to the little child ren of Fatlnna bringing a divine promise of peace to a world at war, we dedicate this record of our year at Rosary. It is a labor of love, sanc- tified by her benediction, made possible by her intercession. It is a gift from the children of the Rosary to their Lady, Queen of the Rosary. Give us grace to renew daily this solemn declaration which we have this day pledged in the . . . . . . Ylfjass CHAPLAIN OF ROSARY COLLEGE Dear Students: It is gratifying to me that Rosary College's Activity Book is dedicated to the Blessed Mother, our special Patroness. It is pleasing to find yet another expression of that deep love for the Blessed Mother which is felt for her by the faculty and students of Rosary. We, as members of these United States, are dedicated to Mary under her title of the Immaculate Conception ; as members of Rosary College we are dedicated to her again under her title of Queen of the Most Holy Rosary. In comparatively recent years our Blessed Mother has appeared to man twice: at Lourdes as the Immaculate Conception, at Fatima as Queen of the Most Holy Rosary. Thus she has chosen the second and third last invocations of the Litany of Loretto. We may hope that she will deign to visit us yet once more, this time under the title of the last invocation, that of Queen of Peace. It is my hope that you will help to hasten the day of Mary's next apparition by praying to her under her title of Queen of Peace, so that she will bring with her from her Divine Son true peace, so that she will soon reign over a world which knows true peace. Opened by an early nnorning solemn high mass, the ceremonies were con- tinued in mid-afternoon when the Very Reverend John L. Callahan, O.P. spoke. This was followed by the blessing of one thousand roses to be offered to Our Lady and the lighting of the Peace Candle. The A Capella Choir sang O Salutaris hiostia ' and Tantum Ergo at the Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament which ensued. A daylight procession to the grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes closed the afternoon service. Crowning gift of the children of the Rosary on this day was a second pro- cession by torchlight to Our Lady's grotto accompanied by the devoted hHall Mary's of the participants who told their beads along the way. 3n iWemoriam HOPE CHENEY For Hope and for Pat, a Senior and a Freshman, life Is just beginning— not the earthly life with Its trials and tasks, but the heavenly life of reward for living well the preliminary round. Thus the end has been the beginning, and strife has ended in peace. Hope was extremely thoughtful and had a wonderful sense of humor. Her interest in others and her knack of having a good time with them made her the center of any group. She was always beautifully groomed and we loved to see her about the halls, slender and charming with her blue eyes crinkling in a laugh. Pat was Rosary's synonym for kindness and mis- chief. Pat always discouraged uncharitable com- ments about anyone. She was kind to the Insignifi- cant member of a group, and went out of her way to do anything she could do for another. But above all, her faith was an integral part of her personality, reflected by her every action and thought. A daily communicant, she was exceptional In her piety. These two will be remembered often in Rosary's prayers. We hope they will remember us in theirs. It presents the news in Rosary fashion and from the student viewpoint. It Is a mixture of the religious, the educational and the humorous. All in all, a collegiate and Catholic newspaper! Delta Sigma, the press club, and The Rosarian work in close collaboration. Membership In Delta Sigma is obtained by prescribed work in the editorial, advertising, or make-up department of The Rosarian. Beginning with its December election and a January get-together which featured articles written in the newswritlng class, Delta Sigma followed up with lectures of personal adventures in journalism by Maureen Daly, '42, and Dorothy Maguire, '38. Miss Daly originated the Chicago Tribune column, On the Solid Side, and Is a writer of book reviews; Miss Maguire Is a Chicago Tribune employee. A May initiation tea in honor of all new members brought the season to a festive close. 22 OCTOBER Srex, the dramatic society, selected its three major productions of the year from the annals of great comedy. October saw the curtains rise on the modern American satire, First Lady, followed by a representative of the best in French drama, The Miser, while a unique outdoor presentation of A Mid- summer Night's Dream closed the season. Srex has always been something more than a multicolored mixture of footlights, grease paint, parties and Christmas teas. Its name stands primarily for all that means good theater at Rosary College and for all that tends to encourage creative and critical endeavor among those students interested in the drama. NOVEMBER The Very Reverend SAMUEL CHARLES MAZZUCHELLl Order of Preachers 1806-1864 A noble-featured aristocratic Italian left his native land in 1828 to start his career as a missionary in America. But this man was more than a missionary. hHe was an educator. Accordingly, he built an rr-odemy in Benton, Wisconsin, later moved to Sinsinawa. At the request of Cardinal Mundelein, the Dominican Sisters transferred the college department of Saint Clara's to the Chicago diocese. On June 20, 1920, the beloved Cardinal laid the cornerstone and two years later, in September, 1922, Rosary College opened its doors to young women in quest of scholarship and culture. At that time only Mother Emily Hall and the Science Building were completed. Work on the beautiful Gothic west wing, a centenary memorial of Father Samuel's ordination by Bishop Fenwick, was not begun until Founder's Day, 1930. 24 NOVEMBER Memorable event — the turning of the first spadeful of earth for Lewis Memorial, 1931. 25 NOVEMBER REVEREND J. W. REGAN, O.P. Retreat Master Though the outward transition fronn pulsating activity to simple meditation is startling, the Retreat brings an inward change too, not quite so noticeable, but that is only because no one can hear hearts sing or see thoughts wing themselves to God. Father Regan's each thought is a meditation; each sentence a challenge. Vibrant collegians are brought to realize that not united to God we are worse than nothing. Intimate nearness to Love during the days of retreat makes us appreciate Mary Dixon Thayer's surging emotion in writing: Love rose — for thus Love would atone — and passed through space and chose our mean, ungrateful earth To the wonder of the skies, saying, I shall pause here. Yes, Love paused — and in Retreat we pause to learn more of it; to learn that the things that count most are the things we cannot count. In these days we taste a mere fragm ent of the fabulous joy we are sometime to possess if our human lives are lived for the love of God. Father Regan states that we become like unto the things we love most, then asks what might happen if we love God very much. If we love God enough we shall appreciate suffering because we will Interpret it not as a sign of hHis malediction but of hHis benediction, for, whom the Lord loveth. He chastiseth, and v e shall strive to reproduce the life of Christ in ourselves. There must be enough clouds in our life to make of its passage a very beautiful sunset. 26 NOVEMBER LeotoLeion Theotokeion is many things. It is an association of Rosary College students outstanding in scholastic work. It is a society fostering high Ideals of honesty and scholarship, initiating Its carefully selected members in impressive chapel ceremonies, and uniting them through the study of subjects of common interest. It is an active organization, conducting a drive for the scholarship fund, meeting frequently to discuss the best that has been done in art and literature, holding a round-table talk on communism, evaluating war-time discoveries in medicine. It Is a union of Catholic college women, loud In the praise of their Church and anxious to support - er in all the activities In which She may need their assistance. It Is an organization dedicated to and placed under the special protection of Our Lady. All this is Theotokeion. It truly belongs to the Mother of Sod. And when she longs for the thrill of seeing the children of her own mind set down in print, there is Rosary's magazine. The Eagle, to the rescue. Writers' Club and The Eagle were founded to encourage literary activity among the students and to promote appreciation of fine writing. The meetings of Writers' Club are concerned chiefly with the study and constructive criticism of original student compositions, while the pages of The Eagle mirror the best of these compositions In Its three annual issues. As Its special activities for the year, Writers' Club sponsored its annual Short Story Contest in the spring and participated in a meeting with Theotokeion devoted to the life and work of Gerard Manley Hopkins. 29 mm DECEMBER Fluffy snow-puffs rounding pointed gables . . . Farrell, chaplain of Pontiac Reformatory opened the series with a dynamic talk and discussion, hie was followed some weeks later by Mr. Virgil W. Peterson, Director of the Chicago Crime Commission. The Reverend Robert P. Donovan, chaplain of the Illinois State Training School for boys at Saint Charles, was third in this distinguished series. The Reverend Ralph Gallagher, S. J., Loyola University, gave the final talk bringing out clearly in it the relation between sociology and social work in the field of delinquency. During the second semester Miss Mary Catherine Gorman, '41, opened the new series by an explana- tion of her field psychiatric social work. This will be followed by similar discussions of other fields of social work. A Guest Book is kept by the Society. The membership of the Society is drawn from the Senior, Junior and Sophomore classes. Its aim is to make possible a better understanding of society and social problems. Established in 1940, the aim of the Spanish Club is to promote a better understanding of the Spanish and Latin American people through a more complete knowledge of their culture, literature, customs and language. This has been achieved by active participation of each member in all the Club's activities. The eighty members in Calaruega included this year tvyo students from Mexico, one from Colombia, and one from Puerto Rico. It began the term with its annual initiation of new members. The December meeting featured an all-Spanish Christmas program, followed by a tea. Later during the year it spon- sored a movie. With a desire to emphasize the truly worth while accomplishments that the Germany of old presented to the world, monthly meetings are held during which the members try to learn a little more of the background and customs of the people whose language they are studying. The event calendar of Die Marionetten was full and varied this first year of its existence. A meeting with the History Club was held to discuss Germany's future position in the world, while a joint meeting with other modern language clubs laid emphasis on German culture. A talk by a German refugee con- cerning the education of his countrymen was followed by an alles Deutsch picnic and a Kaffee-klatsch. What have we here? — Mais, oui, it's the French Club, known in official circles as Cercle Fleur-de-Lis, the name deriving its significance from the crest of the royal family of France. Even If you don't parlez-vous, you probably recognize the French Club as one of the most popular and active organizations on Rosary's campus. Fleur-de-Lis was organized in the year 1936-37 by a group of French majors who, returning from Fribourg, wished to continue their Interest In French. This Interest is fostered in several ways, for Cercle Fleur-de-LIs has for Its alms and ideals: (|) to acquaint its members with French customs, language, and traditions; (2) to Instill an appreciation and taste for all things French; (3) to provide an opportunity for students to carry on familiar Frencin conversations; (4) to assure that cultural subjects will not be neglected In a world which stresses vocational studies. The Club functions throughout the year. Not only are the regular meetings conducted, but special projects are sponsored. The first semester's activities Included the presentation of an all-school movie. One of the oldest departmental organizations in the school, the hiistory Club is proof of the interest that Rosary College students have always had in current affairs. Through a desire to keep in touch with developments in the world today, the History Club meets frequently and sponsors its Current Affairs Forum twice a month. In the past year, the Forum held discussions on Japan, China, Arab nationalism, the Zionist movement, Germany, Latin America, peacetime conscription and the British Empire. Having been given charge of our College's peace activities, the History Club has represented Rosary at both regional and national meetings of the Student Peace Federation of the Catholic Association for International Peace. 38 JANUARY a tliema tic6 C lu I? Club meetings range from talks on the lives of great mathematicians and the history of mathematics to playing mathematical games and solving puzzles. Among the highlights of the year's programs were a mathematical contest designed to stump the experts, a lecture on astronomy, a discussion of the influence of the war on mathematics and a demon- stration on the use of the slide rule. S. Naval Hospital at Great Lakes, Illinois. Organized in October, 1942, as a branch of the Oak Park Chapter of the Red Cross, the Rosary College Unit was one of the first of Its kind In the country. Since then It has grown increasingly larger and thus its work has grown more Important. The War Bond Committee also made its appearance in 1942. It was organized to make each Rosary student conscious of her responsibility to help provide funds to maintain unbroken supply lines of battle equipment to our men overseas. By fulfilling an established quota for each semester totaling $75,000.00 Rosary has sponsored the buying of a pursuit plane, a Navy-trainer plane and an army jeep. In the same year the Rosary Auxiliary Corps was established to counteract, In part, the help situation. This one hundred per cent student bucket brigade is divided Into two groups: the residents dust, mop and shine the residence building and the non-residents keep Lewis Memorial spic and span from the fourth floor to the lockers. 41 FEBRUARY LEFT TO RIGHT: Seated: Joan Isermann, resident treasurer; Mary Lucille Flanagan, non-resident treasurer; Mary Margaret McCarron, resident vice-president; Mary Constance Woods, president; Janet Cunningham, non-resident vice-president; Mary Isermann, secretary. , r l a i ■ l STANDING: Margaret Dailey, Mary Jane Ryan, Genevieve Locke, Rita Leahy, Corinne Cohan, Ann Lmberger, Rosemary FHolland, Mary Katherine Finnegan, Ellen Hendricks. The objecf of the Student Government Association, says its constitution, is to establish and maintain Student Management of matters of College life not reserved to the jurisdiction of the Faculty. . . . This organization bought the new coke machine, sponsored R-Year, held frequent Friday night parties for residents, purchased the beautiful new flag for the quadrangle, and gave an authentic barn dance, complete with callers, gingham skirts and fiddlers! This is the Student Government Association, a mixture of the intensely earnest and the gay, part of all that goes to make life here at Rosary increasingly pleasant. Founded over nineteen years ago. Student Government has ever capably managed student affairs, exercising its powers with judgment and discretion, mindful of all that tends to insure the religious life and scholastic interests of the students. Any association that can keep Rosary's wheels running so smoothly and still avert hard feelings among the campused, deserves a large bouquet. Sheed on March 7 and 8. Although Mr. Sheed is the very busy publisher of the well-known Sheed and Ward Publishing hlouse, he also manages to be an active Catholic layman and zealous street preacher. As this was not Mr. Sheed's first visit to Rosary, the upperclassmen eagerly awaited the opportunity of hearing him again. The first lecture was addressed to the student body In observance of the feast of Saint Thomas Aquinas. Mr. Sheed showed how the philosophy of the Illustrious Dominican saint contained the answer to the social problems of today. hHIs subsequent conferences were devoted to the philosophy of Saint Augustine In an effort to make the burning passion and great mind of this Father of the Church appreciated and understood. Question periods were interspersed throughout the lectures to enable the students to clear up perplexing prob- lems or to be further enlightened on any particular subject. The evening of March 7, Mr. Sheed con- ducted a Catholic Evidence Round Table In the Student Lounge. Through all his lectures, whether on street speaking or philosophy, ran the thread of living Catholicism. In his dynamic exercise of the Faith we glimpsed a little of what it means really to live one's religion. 45 MARCH Multicolored splash prints darting across Cloister Walk ... One of the events worth all the tumbles, saddle burns and tardy marks. All-year-round practice shows to advantage on College Day. Not a word to be said except perfect. MAY Songs and Incense, roses and prayer, and young hearts dedicating themselves to Mary, Queen of May, Queen of the Rosary — These are the thoughts that impressed themselves upon our minds as we watched the Crowning of Mary in the time-honored ceremony. Tradition had decreed the date, the first Sunday of May, and the spot. Rosary's chapel. Popular election had decided upon the court. Mary Constance Woods was maid-of-honor and Barbara Tighe, Margaret Dailey, Marjorie Quinn, and Isabel Kipping were attendants to Catherine McGarr, May Queen. The blend of voices and organ music drifted down from the choir loft while the cap-and-gowned Seniors marched forward to the altar. The Seniors offered their roses to be placed at the foot of Mary's statue. The Rosary was then recited and the ceremony, beautiful in its simplicity, was brought to a close by a sermon and Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament. 57 MAY C apella C Loli It's fun to sing and the Rosary College A Capella Choir is proof! Devoting much of its time to hard study and practice, the Choir has become an integral part of the most beloved events at Rosary College. What would Founder's Day, the Christmas Party, College Day, Candle and Rose, and Commencement be v ithout it? And Rosary is not alone in the enjoyment of its Choir. This year, besides the annual concert, its members sang on Christmas Eve for the hospitalized soldiers at Vaughan Memorial Hospital. The aim of the Rosary College A Capella Choir is to promote fellowship among young women interested in singing the good music of all ages and to inspire in its hearers a better appreciation of that music. This ambition has well been realized. 58 MAY MARY CONSTANCE WOODS, President of the Student Governnnent Association.
