m The Bulldog Growl Rosalie Public School Rosalie, Nebraska 68055 1979-1980 We’re Lookin’ Good Here! The beginning of a new decade brought many changes to RHS. In 1980, the school received its long-awaited accredidation after a few renovations and staff additions. Along with that, more courses were offered — such unheard of things like Art I and II, Consumer Education, Drafting and Welding, and Interior Design. For this reason, We're Lookin' Good really represents the mood of the 1979-80 school year. 3 Lookin’ Good There! 6 Lookin’ Good Everywhere! ROSALIE HIGH SCHHn DRIVER EOfJCAIiufi PflUS MOTOR Robert Sterner was the Superintendent for the 1979-80 school year. Ken Brown was Rosalie's first full-time Princi- pal. He helped with school prob- lems and worked out new ideas. He also was the Activities Director and Guidance Counselor. Marilyn Hansen taught 8 third and 6 fourth grade students and was the Elementary Head Teacher. School Board Members were Jerry Wortman, John Kroger, Jr., Dwain Os- trand - Secretary, Janet Smith, Larry Ahlers - Presi- dent, and Dennis Slaughter - Treasurer. Norma Farrens taught Business Education and sponsored the Yearbook. She also was the 7th grade class spon- sor. Mary Kiersch was the full-time office secretary. 10 Carol Peterson taught 7-12 grade English, which included Grammar, and Speech. She also directed the first all-school play and one act plays and spon- sored the Sophomore class. Jennifer Pierce taught 7-12 grade Home Ec., and Consumer Ed. She also sponsored the Pep Club. Cooks were Rosella Anderson, Head Cook, and Jeannine Jorgenson who began working in the Kitchen sec- ond semester to help prepare the meals. L isa Boyer taught 12 Kindergarteners and also taught Re- medial Reading to grade school children. Vicki Schmitz taught 7-12 grade Math classes and also coached Volleyball and Junior High Basketball. In addition to a full-time Principal this was also the first year for a full-time Home Ec. teacher. With the addition of this position, three new classes were added: Design-Tailoring, Adult Living-Child Devel- opment and Consumer Ed. Art I, Art II and Elemen- tary Art were also added along with a Remedial Math Program. A Welding and Drafting class was added to the Shop Program, and an Elementary Library was added to the existing facilities and supervised by a part-time Librarian. 11 Susan Sheldrick was the first time art teacher in Rosalie. She taught K-12 basic art skills and was the sponsor for the Junior class. Barbara Garrett taught K-12 vocal and instrumental music. She organized Rosalie's first marching band and was the Freshmen sponsor. Barbara Wildman taught 11 fifth and 8 sixth grade students. Gary Jorgenson was the Head football Coach, P.E., and Health Instructor. He taught a course in C.P.R. for all students in P.E. and offered an after school class to the teachers. He also coached the junior High Co-ed Basketball Team and sponsored the R-Club. Darnelle Nissen taught 7-12 Science classes and sponsored the Senior class. She also was Lunch Supervisor. Ernest McMurtry taught Industrial Arts, Drafting, and Welding. He also was assistant Football and Basketball Coach. Kim Naden taught 7-12 History courses and was the head Basketball and Track Coach. June Hawk was the first part-time Library Supervisor. She helped with K-6 grade students by reading short stories and was also the 8th grade sponsor. 13 Pat Alexander taught 10 first gade and 7 second grade students. Rodger Brown was the full-time custodian and also drove the Kindergarten Bus. Myrna Peterson was a cook in the kitchen first semester of the school year. Vickie Slaughter was Teacher's Aid and helped with play- ground duty and worked with individual stu- dents who needed extra classroom help. In addition to their regular classes, they signed up for courses in Art, Home Ec., Shop, and their P.E. class offered a course in Cardio Pulmonary Resus- citation. Not Pictured: Shane Johnston. This year the eighth grade was short on numbers, but not on spirit. Besides attending a full-class schedule, they were involved in many extra cur- ricular activities including Junior High Basketball, Track, Pepclub, and Volleyball. In their first fund raising event the Freshmen served their homemade chili to a capacity crowd. Members of the class also gained dramatic exper- ience when they presented the play American Gothic . The Freshmen also carried a full class load and were busy in many extra curricular activi- ties. Busy Year For The Sophomore Boys! The seven Sophomore boys kept busy this school year. They were involved in many activities in- cluding Football, Basketball and Track. They also served lunch following the One Act Plays, served for Prom, and decorated the gym for graduation. In between all of their activities they also managed to find time to attend classes. Both hard work and perserverance helped the Juniors achieve their record breaking magazine sales. In addition to selling magazines the six Ju- niors also spent many hours planning and deco- rating for the annual Junior-Senior Prom. It was also the first year for an area Freshman- Sophomore Basketball Tournament hosted by the R-Club. Teams partici- pating in the tournament were: Walth- ill, Bancroft, Beemer, and Rosalie. First place in the tourney went to Walthill with Rosalie grabbing second place and Bancroft receiving the third place hon- ors. Over $1,670 worth of ads were sold by this year's energetic yearbook staff. Besides setting record ad sales, the staff was able to add many new features and eight more pages to this year's book. Not Pic- tured Wally Pierce. 33 Injuries Plague Bulldogs This year’s Rosalie Bulldog Football team lost three of eight starters midway through the sea- son. With all these injuries the Bulldogs only managed a 3-6 season. Rosalie's defense held the opposition to an average of 272 yards a game while allowing them to score 34 points a game. Our offense averaged 303 yards a game but only scored 24 points a game. We had a total of 2815 yards, 1644 yards rushing and 1171 yards passing. Wal- ly Pierce led in rushing with 495 yards. Marlon Hennig led in passing with 985 yards and Mike Ostrand followed with 186 yards. Floyd Beck- mann led the team in receiving with 43 recep- tions for 742 yards. Her coaching duties also includ- ed the Junior High Volleyball team which was established this year. The Varsity ended their season with a 2-12 record while the Junior Varsity had a 2- 9 mark. Trackers Set School Records 44 The 79-80 track team consisted of Mike Ostrand, Sheila Bon- neau, Marcio Guedes, Coach Naden, Brad Slaughter, Kim Smith and Marlon Hennig who is not pictured. Mike Ostrand competed in the 300 meter hurdles, 800 meter run, 1600 meter relay, 400 meter run, and set a school record in the high jump at 5'6 . Sheila Bonneau participated in the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, long jump, and the shot put. Marcio Guedes ran in the 1600 meter relay, 100 meter, 200 meter, and competed in the shot put. Brad Slaughter also ran in the 1600 meter relay, and the 400 meter. Brad also competed in the high jump, and the triple jump. Kim Smith competed in s the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, and also in the long jump. Marlon Hennig set two school records this year. One was in the 1600 meter run, and the other was in the pole vault which he set at 1V4 . Marlon also competed in the 1600 me- ter relay, 800 meter run, and in the triple jump. 45 Jr. Hi Makes Tracks Although the Junior High track team had few members, they came home with many ribbons. Coach Naden and his squad traveled to meets in Macy and Wisner as well as competing in the annual “Cow Pasture Relays in Rosalie. Some traditions such as dress-up week remained unchanged, as spir- ited groups of zanies filled the halls, includ- ing hee hawing people for Hillbilly Day, sen- ior citizens and groups of babies for Genera- tion Gap Day, and many strange creatures JUNIORS: Alicia Nissen and Wally Pierce SENIORS: Dana Reil and Marlon Hennig for Wild Card Day. But by the end of the week, everyone was ready for formal dress and the traditional day of Black and Gold. This year the townspeople were included in the fun as all the students and faculty walked downtown for a public pep rally held at 3:05 on main street. Another first was holding the coronation on the football field before the kickoff of the Homecoming game against Macy. The Homecoming dance was held in the gym after the game with a theme of Shad- ows in the Moonlight . The gym was deco- rated in fall colors with music provided by Carl Keller from radio station Rock 98. P Homecoming Week Spirit Enthusiasm was contagious in the halls of R.H.S. as Homecoming Royalty, the battle against Macy, students and faculty prepared for the highlights of and the Homecoming Dance, the week, which included the crowning of the 1st Time For All School Play Lisa Anderson and Marty Brown had the leading roles in the Western Comedy hit Annie Get Your Gun. Instead of the usual ham supper, those attending were treated to a smor- gasbord prepared by the students' mothers and faculty. 1 Highlights of the honors presentations include: 1. The Juniors received a plaque for the best na- tional magazine individual sales average. 2. Tim Ahlers receives his basketball letter. 3. Kim Nelson and Dan Nissen receive music awards presented by Miss Garrett. 4. Mr. Brown presents Floyd Beckmann with the Board of Governors Scholarship from NNTCC. 5. Craig Posvar receives his football letter. 6. Sue Sheldrick presents an award while stand- ing behind the rug made by senior Art stu- dents Dan Nissen and Wanda Novak. 7. Football Awards included: Dan Nissen, All Conference; Floyd Beckmann, All Confer- ence and All-State; Todd Gatzemeyer, Hon- orable Mention All Conference, and Hustle Award; Marlon Hennig, Most Valuable Player. 8. Fabio Garcia received an Honorary Basketball Letter. 9. Marlon, Dana, Kim, Val, and Sheila were rec- ognized for being on the Honor Roll every grading period of this school year. 10. Dana Reil receives the Regents Scholarship. Junior-Senior Prom: “Sharing The Night Together’1 The Junior-Senior Prom was held Saturday, May 3, 1980. Using the colors of ivory, peach, rust, and brown, the Juniors transformed the gym into a romantic dining room. Junior Class President Rhonda Novak was Mistress of Ceremonies and welcomed the Seniors. Mar- lon Hennig, Senior Class President, responded with a thank you on behalf of all of the Seniors. Cecil Brummond read the Class Wills and the Class Prophesy was read by Rhonda Novak. Mar- cio Guedes gave the blessing for the meal of Swiss Steak, Baked Potato, Green Bean Casserole, Roll and Butter, Tossed Salad, and Dream Pie. Gordy Baumann provided the entertainment for a romantic evening of music and dance. There’s No Business Like Show Business Two successful plays, American Gothic com- posed of an all Freshman cast, and The Oyster and the Pearl put on by six Seniors and three Junior High Students, were presented on April 18 by the drama students. Directed by Ms. Carol Peterson, the students put in many hours of hard work preparing for their performances, and treat- ed the community to an enjoyable evening of One Act Plays. K. C. Will Never Be The Same!! The Seniors spent a wild weekend in Kansas City May 9 - 11. Under the guidance of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Brown and Mrs. Pierce, they managed to take in all the sights of K.C. without doing too much damage. Saturday was spent at Worlds of Fun, the highlight of the day being the new roller coaster the Orient Express . The van trips and both nights were spent playing the card game UNO . After losing one game Floyd Beckmann turned somersaults down the hall of the hotel and Dana Reil had to play an entire game with a sack on her head! It was a great weekend and will be remem- bered by everyone. All The Wonders We Seek Are Found Within Ourselves. aiu As memories unfold across the meadows of our minds, we remem- ber the special moments we shared with others. The Class of 1980 ended their days at Rosalie High on Sunday, May 18, with Baccalau- reate and Commencement exercises held in the gym. As tradition dictates, the graduates entered following Junior Honor Guards Wally Pierce and Lisa Anderson to Pomp and Circum- stance played by Mrs. V. E. Crowell. Rev. Carr Hume gave the Invocation which was followed by Salutatorian Kim Smith's address entitled Sweet Dreams . The Hands of Time was sung by the Jr. High quartet, followed by Rev. Hume s Baccalaureate address. The Eighth graders were then presented their diplomas by Principal Ken Brown. Damn the torpedos, full steam ahead ... was the opening state- ment from Valedictorian Marlon Hennig's eye-opening speech. Scholarships and awards were then presented. Floyd Beckmann re- ceived a Board of Governors Scholarship and an Athletic Award; Marlon Hennig was awarded the Valedictorian and Citizenship Awards. A Regents Scholarship, UNL Honors Program, and a Scholar- ship Award was presented to Dana Reil; and Kim Smith received the Rosalie Faculty Association and Community Scholarship and the Salu- tatorian Award. The big moment came when Board of Education President Larry Ahlers presented the graduating class with their diplomas. After signifying their achievement by switching their lassies, the graduates left the school for the last time. A combination of tradi- tion and changes made the 1979-1980 school year one to remember. The winning Basketball team, piling on each other at noon, and day dreaming through class in the Spring will soon just be happy memo- ries. As we look back .... WE'RE LOOKIN' GOOD!
