At times they thought they'd never finish, especially before the final deadline. With Mrs. Tye cracking the whip, and the editors burning the midnight oil, nine months of hard work comes to an end. Congratulations seniors from the annual staff of 1972-73. LEFT TO RIGHT: Roy Dube, Sr. rep.3 Beverly McBride, jr. rep., Shari Broeckel, Ir. rep., Barbara Wallace, Soph. rep.g Cathy Sheahan, Jr. rep.5 Betty Trull, Art Editor, Mrs. Tye, Adviserg Patty Mattausch, Ir. rep. m fg You are indeed entering into very challenging times. You will have the opportunity to participate in making our country and world a better place to live. Have a better plan or way of doing things and meaningful change can be brought about. Mr. Meserve. To the Class of 1973: You have reached an important milestone in your journey toward an education. Truly, I hope you regard commemce- ment as the name indicates: a beginning. I know you will be unable to leave Rosalia High School without pangs of regret, but I am confident you will realize the possibilities the future holds, as well as the hardships, and go forth courageously to meet both. Bon Voyage! Mr. Roberts Mr. Heglar--Have you ever seen a person that could coach football in the fall, grade school basketball in the winter, and baseball in the spring, and still do as good a job as Mr. Heglar? It's doubtful. As interested as he is in sports, it's no wonder that he teaches grade school and high school PE, and is the Letterman's Club Advisor. But he's not just all brawn and no brain, he also teaches high school history. 4 F acult Administration If ff Mrs. Widman--This picture depicts the true Mrs. Widman, always teaching science, that's why she captured the de- served title of Biology Teacher of the Year for the State of Washington. She also is co-coach for high school bowl, and the advisor for the junior Class. Mrs. Tye--Do you hear the sound of a whip cracking, chances are that Mrs. Tye is nearby. No, it is only the sound of busy typewriter keys because Mrs. Tye is the head of the Business Education department. Not only does she teach the Business courses but also Spanish. She is the Ad- visor of the Spartan Annual Staff and the Senior Class. Even though she is accused of cracking the whip, this could be the reason she accomplishes so many things. Mr. McKay--Among the baa of sheep, the moo of steers, and the squeal of pigs and tires, you'1l find Mr. McKay. He's the head of the agriculture and driver's education de- partment. Advising the FFA keeps him extremely busy. But his efforts are well rewarded as his FFA is rated among the top 10 in the state. 5 W ' A fi ? .t Q95 UB? MR. FASTEP--You can always find Mr. Eastep, our art teacher, busily drawing or creating masterpieces in the art room to the surprise of his students. He is also a veteran ping pong player and it is only logical that he is the coach of our ping pong team, which incidently had a successful season this year. MR. STAEBELL- -While advising his journalism staff, which publishes an outstanding monthly Spartanic, he sometimes slips up and subconsciously draws basketballs or track shoes all over the copy. This could be caused by always concentrating on his B- squad basketball team, or maybe he is thinking about coaching track in the spring. When he infrequently has spare time, he also advises the frosh class. 6 MRS. VOGE--Something is always cooking in the Home Ec room, whether it be tasty goodies made by the Home Ec students, or tricky schemes to try out with the girl's basketball team. With Home Ec and girl's basketball keeping her quite active, we Wonder how she finds the time to also be the FHA Advisor but she seems to handle them Without much trouble. Scholastic Scholars MR. THOMAS--Sounds of beautiful music can always be heard coming from the band room under the direction of Mr. Thomas, our music teacher. But music isn't his only talent, he also teaches English and acts as the NHS Advisor. it S 1 3, .,arffsnwz25awl i, , fa MRS. PIASTINO--Numbers here, numbers there, num- bers, numbers everywhere and in the midst you can see Mrs. Plastino, our math teacher. She's always there to discuss the confusing world of numbers and advise the sophomore class. She also makes a colossal High School Bowl Co-coach. MR. FEENAN--Amidst the smell of firm grip and kramer gesic, among adhesive tape and knee pads, our terrific coach is always there, coaching his basketball team and doing a fantastic job. On top of that, he also is our high school counselor who helps us in our preparation for col- lege. MRS. I-IENNING--Wherever there are books, filmstrips, newspapers, or huge library fines you will find our librari- an, Mrs. Henning. She is usually kept busy maintaining law and order in the library, but she always finds time to supervise that spirited group of girls, the Spartanettes. 7 - ' L X.. The Spartans have seen more successful seasons than the 1972 year, but a great deal was accomplished. This is the first year ever that the entire Spartan team was awarded gold helmets because of their outstanding performances at various times during the season. On September 8 the Spartans started off the After being defeated by the Mullan Tigers last season with an 8-6 victory over the Springdale year, the Spartans were ready for action when Chargers. It was a long, hard battle, but the the two teams met at Mullan September 15. The end proved to be victorious for the mighty work paid off with a Spartan victory, the final Spartan team. score being 26-7. The Spartans hosted the Chewelah Cougars September 22 for their first home game of the season. Rosalia lagged behind in the first half, but with a tremendous effort in the second half the margin was narrowed 22-20. The Spartans traveled to St. John on September For their first league game on October 6, the 22 for their home game against the Dayton Spartans headed to the home of the Eagles. The Tigers. It was a rough scrimmage with plenty of Homecoming Spirit was with the Eagles causing penalties and injuries. The final score was 35-O the Spartans to fall to defeat by the score of in favor of our opponents. 50-7. The Spartans faced the Panthers for the sixth game of the season. Oakesdale gained a large lead but in the fourth quarter the Spartans made a comeback. They were unable to overthrow the Panthers and the game ended 22-12. 12 It was a cold day at Almira for the Spartans on October 20. The game was one of defense as the Spartans held the Rebels to 8 points. However, the Spartans were scoreless. Final Score: 8-0. Rosalia's Homecoming was not a joyous event when they played the Lacrosse Tigers. It was more than a team effort, but their tough determination was not enough to crush the Tigers. The Spartans were edged 27-13. The Rosalia Spartans faced the Colton Wildcats for their final game of the season. Colton was rated as second in the state and they held their position as they defeated the Spartans 59-O. Mike Dale-Captain's Award and Inspirational Award, and Russ Prince-Captain's Award and Most Valuable Players Award. Spartan Spirit Runs High Spartan Week was a new event at Rosalia High. It was filled with class competitions to prove who had the most spirit, presentations, singing, downtown rallies, pep assemblies during noon hour, hall decorations, locker-room decorations, and special favors for football players. The week's finale was the La Crosse football game, and at half-time during the game, the crowning of Spartan Queen Betty Trull. Moneymaking activities for this year included participation in the school carnival and a concession stand at a basketball game. This money is used for an FTA scholarship given every year to a deserving student. OFFICERS--FIRST ROW: M. Meserve, M. Dale, P. Mattausch. SECOND ROW: G. Oliver, T. St. john, B. McBride, D. Brown. They competed against Oakesdale, St. John, Garfield, Palouse, and Tekoa. The County Jamboree was held at Endicott, but the girls weren't quite prepared for the opposition they met.
