f6fwu0M20w About Mr. Daniel C. Roper Daniel C. Roper was born in Marlboro County, South Carolina in 1867 . In 1894 , he came to Washington and served as clerk in the Senate Committee on Interstate Commerce. Most significantly, Mr. Roper was appointed a member of the District of Columbia Board of Education in 1930. Mr. Roper's vital interest in education was expressed in his autobiography. FIFTY YEARS OF PUBLIC SERVICE. Until his death in 1943 , Mr. Roper played a significant role in build- ing civic consciousness, and furthering educational progress in the Nation's capital. About Its History Daniel C. Roper was approved as the official name of the building on December 19, 1962. Building was accepted by the Board of Education, August 4, 1966. School officially opened , September 7 , 1966 . Dedicatory events Ribbon cutting, April 18, 1967 Student Dedication Ceremonies, April 19, 1967 Formal Dedication, April 20, 1967. About the Building The contract price for building our school was 33, 166 , 158. 00. Its capacity is for 1 ,470 students and it is situated on 4.75 acres. Many people whose homes were in this area had to move away and their homes were torn down in order to build the school. The specified design of Roper Junior High School is based upon creating a warm , friendly atmosphere. The classrooms, wings, surround a courtyard . This type of plan makes the corridors short and allows easy access from one classroom to another. lts Facilities The building has 33 regular classrooms, 6 general science rooms, a biology laboratory, 2 typing classrooms, 3 art classrooms, 3 music rooms, 3 homemaking laboratories, a food and clothing laboratory , mechanical drawing and shop rooms, a double gymnasium, health suite , library , recreation room , an auditorium with a capacity for 750 , and a cafeteria with a seating capacity for 640.
