Staggs The Rough Rider staff of 1971-1972 would like to dedicate this edi- tion of the yearbook to Major Staggs, who has served as principal for Six years, This will be Mjor Staggs' last year at Rooseveltg after this he will enjoy his golden years of retirement. It is the sincere wish ofthe Rough Rider staff that he will have many full and happy years ahead of him. Major Staggs has served admirably as a teacher of higher mathematics and as an administrator. He has been a great help to the cadet corps in numerous ways. He may rightly be proud of himself. It is the hope of all teachers, we believe, that their satisfaction will not be attained by solely resting on their laurels, but also through the knowledge that they have taught their pupils just a little of what life is all about. I know the pride your families and friends feel on this occasion ar I share it with them. The Class of 1972 has proven itself worthy of being rated with outstanding senior classes of the past. As you are about to become a part of a complex, critical and yet exciting and challenging world I would be pleased if you would take with you a little of my philosophy. HONESTY -- be honest with yourself. Do not pretend to be what you are not. Be aware of your shortcomings and endeavor to overcome them: capitalize on your stronger traits. T HONOR -- an almost forgotten word but in its meaning lies the foundation of this great country of ours -- the honorable men who fought for independence -- the honorable men who designed our constitution. You, too, can be honorable if you are fair to others, do not cheat or lie, respect your elders, respect the laws of our land and have the moral courage to say no when others about you weaken. INTEGRITY -- that quality that makes you of sound moral prin- ciples, upright, honest and sincere. DUTY -- the respect you owe to your parents and other adults, to your fellowman and to your country. This respect results 4 from a sense of justice, morality, honesty: a sense of feeling of obligation. FAITH -- faith in God to whom you may turn for help and guidance. Alone you can do nothing. SET A GOAL -- like the athlete who stretches and strains to reach the tape to win the race, reach out and set your sights on a worthwhile goal, then following these principles of honesty, honor, integrity and duty apply yourself with enthusiasm and determination to reach that goal. Good luck and best wishes to you. Make good use of your abilities an energies so that you may leave this world just a little better for your having lived -- better for those who follow you. I am certain that is quite a chore to regulate the menus from Week to week in order to come up with a balanced diet or regimen for the num- ber of cadets that we have in the battalion. Concert Band The Roosevelt Military Academy Band under the direc- tion of Mr. Robert Zielinski has come a long way this year in that many of the members of his band were new students this year at the academy. His participation and attitudes from the cadets have been very commendable. Trad1t1onal Gate Ceremony an , 'lar K K R Q 4 13 An annual event during Homecoming at Roosevelt Military Academy is the traditional Gate Ceremony in which new cadets are initiated into the battalion. This is the first and last time that they will pass through the gates until graduation. 50 Homecoming of 1971-72 The day was a grand and glorious one not only weatherwise but be- cause parents and friends of the cadets were able to be here and share in the pride and pomp of the many and varied events that take place on such an occasion as this- HOMECOMING. ' . rrp' 'U' The Crack Squad performs its unique maneuvers, exer- cising its many turns and in- tricate split-second commands to the tune of the drill lead- er's interpretations of such maneuvers. White helmets, white leg- gings or black boots and white trousers make up the apparel worn by the drill team. -A 1 Parents and friends lounge in chairs, on stools, on the grass or stand on the side- lines during the special cere- monies ofthe morning and afternoon. The weather this year was in favor of everyone con- cerned. The sun was shining and warm for the entire day. Heaven, it seemed, looked down and smiled. Homecoming of 1971-72 One of the traditional events'of Homecom- ing is the tossing ofthe dummy on the glowing embers piled high during the pep club ceremo- nies prior to the Homecoming football game for that evening. Some of the cadets spend many evenings after school dragging, cutting, and piling brush in a heap just off the tennis court. At the apropos time just before pep ceremonies, cadets light the bonfire for their Hscalpingu ceremonies. The Battalion review is given in each Homecoming presentation for the parents and friends of the cadets. This is an impres- sive scene with cadets in White trousers, white cap tops, and all the other special apparel Worn during these events. Con- test Winners were cadets Del Rose, Longeway 81 possibly Wadsworth. Much praise goes to the chef for such a prepara- tion as that. During the course of the evening, Jew- ish Cadets lighted their candles 84 gave their traditional rites for the cadet corps to view and hear. The ceremony was quite an impressive one, especially for ones who had not viewed or heard such a ritual.
