mmf, z2Mteflaff The Roosevelt Rough R1ders bounced back after a long drought to establlsh the1r best record 1n four years Pl yrng an eXc1t1ng brand of bas ketball the R1ders scrapped the1r way to an 8 12 record capped off by thelr f1rst w1n 1n the Aledo Tournament 1n many years T tkmg over the relgns of head basketball coach th1s year was Lt LOUIS Westol a graduate of R MA 1n 1954 Greetlng h1m were flV6 sen 1ors and a 1un1or who ga1ned a great deal of exper1ence on last year s ball club W1th the nucleus was bu1lt a team that lmproved tremendously from the tlme pract1ce was called The Rough Rlders after mak1ng a shabby appear nce 1n the fxrst game of the season Wh1ch was played one day after Thanksg1v1ng furlough sped to the1r best start ln recent annals Led by the play of Co Captalns Bob Lang and Fred Jacobsen many teams were surprlsed by the lmproved play of the R1ders and were dealt de feats Partlcularly 1mpress1ve was the1r play on the1r home floor Where they had a 4 2 record for the year Of these games many were cleclded rn the last few seconds It was to say the least an exc1t1ng and 1nterest1ng season Wh1ch provlded many thrllls for the players and the spectators allke The h1ghl1ght of the season was the f1rst cadet w1n 1n the Aledo lnvltatlonal Tournament and 1n the Aledo Gym ln four years Thls ways a hard fought contest w1th the flnal score belng 44 43 1n favor of the Rough Rlders It took two pressure free throws by Ace Groharlng to put the game on 1ce and grve the team th1s well deserved w1n There were many other flne efforts durrng the season and It would be 1mposs1ble to ment1on all of them Among these were Bob Lang s two free throws rn the last 15 seconds Wh1ch beat North Scott 45 43 Fred Jacobsens explosive .33 pomts agamst Terre Haute and Ace Groharmg s dr1v1ng lay up 1n the last seconds of the Ke1thsburg game to pull that t1lt out of the flre Along W1th these efforts were two overt1me games In these the Rlders spllt w1nn1ng the overt1me at Alex1s 55 53 and losrng the North Scott game 44 41 Bob Lang Fred Jacobsen B1ll Clark Ace Groharlng and Jon Wald made up the frrst st 1ng w1th hustllng Andy Shlmp as slxth man Frank Leltner and Bob Seymour dld most of the left over ut1l1ty work and handled th1s Job Very well Lang was the Rough Rlders bw offenslve threat followed closely by Jacobsen and Wald Jacobsen also handled the major port1on of the rebound work and turned ln some f1ne defenslve StlHtS Next years club w1ll mlss the all around play of Lang Jacobsen Clark Groharlng and Shlmp who are all senlors but th1s years team was a pleasant surprlse and we hope that cont1nued lmprovement w1ll be shown 1n the years to come Congratulat1ons from the Rough Rxder Stafr to the basketball team and thelr coach for mak1ng th1s the most lmproved team to be seen here 1n a long t1me Page Seventy three I ' ' cz as . a - 7 - v a V1 ' 7 n v . f ' . . . . , , ' 7 A . f .
