North Junior High, as seen from the aerial view above, appears to be the center of attention in downtown Salina. The buildings are the center of attention and activity of the 1,331 students and 66 faculty members who attend it. The school complex consists of the Roosevelt building on the right and the Lincoln building on the left, with the new addition joining the two buildings. . These are the original buildings and the basis for the name Roosevelt-Lincoln Junior High, Students have nicknamed it North Junior High. The addition joining Roosevelt and Lincoln was completed in 1962 after fire destroyed the original building in l96O, which had housed the music and gym departments. The exterior grounds of these buildings are bustling with activity before and after school hours. From 8:30 A,M, to 3:14 P,M, activities stream from class- rooms, library, physical education departments, and hallways. North Junior High is indeed a center of educational activity, a school on the move. This is especially shown by the formation of many new clubs, a marching band, the reorganization of stu- dent council, and the fact that North's library was named the model library of the year. We hope this year has been successful for you, the student body, faculty, and administration, and hope the coming years will be as rewarding. We, the publications staff, take pride in present ing to you, the Northern Star. tw i 2 ADMINISTRATIO DR SCHURR Superlntendent of Schools M wwf? This interest in reading and independent study has been re- flected in our classrooms and in the cor- ridors of our Junior High School. A student body that is motivated in this manner is build- ing habits that will be of lasting value as it grows toward adulthood. Special recognition should be given 'to the faculty members who have so enthusiastically enriched their classes with the materials in the learning resource center. The faculty believes that through curriculum revision and flexible scheduling students will have a greater chal- lenge to achieve while they are in Junior High School, We will continue to move forward. C, O. Scott, Principal OUR ADMINISTR TORS Another year has been recorded in our ,school history. As we review it in retrospect, we are aware of many innovations and, also, aware of more needed changes in the future years. This ,year a number of new courses have been added to meet the needs of our students. Other newer concepts of education will be inculcated in our curriculum in the next few years. We are living in a rapidly changing world. The social, economic, and cultural needs of tomorrow are difficult to anticipate. No stu- dent of today can foresee his needs of the future years. But of our social forces, the school system can best make an attempt to prepare a student for the space and the tech- nological ages that are to be our way of life in the coming years. We sincerely hope that our school this year in some small way has prepared you for a happy and meaningful adult life. A, G. During this school year, the eighth and ninth grade band has marched in a parade and has per- formed at assemblies. From the seventy-two-piece band came the pep band which was the first of its kind at North in more than twenty years. Training for participation in the band again next year, the sixty-piece seventh grade band did not march but performed in several concerts through- out the year. ,- A Y N... fx. -rg f M., Mx.,-ff -x,-'nf-,.,-. 38 KI fm I i xv' Cf! xi F is fx, If - r . - 1 ,Q 2 7- 1 . 1 .nf 1 1 I 'Q STUDENT CQOUNCFH. REORGANIZED At the beginning of the year each of the forty-four home- rooms at North elect one representative and one alternate for Student Council. The purpose of having a Student Council is to enable the expression of opinions from the whole student body. The reorganization of the council was an important and carefully planned change. The officers were elected and an auditor and recorder were chosen from each grade. The officers, recorders, and auditors make up the executive board. Films on Parliamentary Procedure were shown and this way of conducting meetings was adopted. ,,---Nu f J. 1' 1 1, Z f' it ah' ' ., . rr' 5,2 .. As you know, North, the school on the move , has been very active. Both students and faculty have been busy all year work- ing, playing, and learning together. The two new clubs, Medical Club and Art Club, have been on the move this year by organizing and setting their goals. The title, school on the move , is appropriate because everyone has been active participating in classroom activity and extracurricular programs. . Below are some pictures of students moving. Ti-IE M DEQ L CLUB Sf? 1 1 1 1 wwf' gi? About 6,840 school days or 38 years have been devoted to this school system by Principal C. O, Scott. This has been a long and dedicated time of service. Mr. Scott graduated from Kansas Stat eTeach- er's College and received his Master's Degree from the University of Colorado in 1941. Between 1929 and 1943 Mr. Scott taught sci- ence, arithmetic, English, physical education, and also coached the football teams. In 1944 Mr. Scott became the proud principal of Roosevelt-Lincoln Junior High School. t. if Surely Mr. Scott has helped North progress as the school on the move . He has seen the days in which boxes placed in the homerooms were used as lockers, students sack lunches were eaten in R. 108, and organizations and meetings were held in the Blue Room which is now part of the library. Through Mr. Scott's efforts many new im- provements and techniques have been introduced to keep our school updated. .
