Silence is golden. All through the night and dur- ing most of the week-end and holidays there is a very tomb- like stillness. It is broken in a fraction of a second when the bell rings at 8:00 A.M. on school mornings. At that instant thereis a burst of laughter, crunching of candy bars, and the banging of lockers which will last through the whole day only to surrender once again to the night and its stillness. Silence was golden. 73 Bonecracker 's Delight Modern Approach to Learning; Only one million, six hundred forty-one A C t ua l E xp 8 rie nc 8 thousand, two hundred twenty-five more stitches to go! Others are Tom Weimer, Rita Bieneman, Maxine Saudargas, and Linda Ware. That old favorite by Mark Twain, ttThe Adventures of Tom Sawyer, came to life this year on our stage, November 15th and 16th. The cast did a great job, thanks to Miss Kriens, director; Gregg Walker, student director; Laurie Welsh, stage manager, and Janet Allen, prompter. The plot re- volved around the pranks, problems, and pleasures of two Missouri River boys, Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. ' Ninth Grade Orchestra Performs For Parents and Students. The auditorium rings with beautiful strains of Beethoven, Bach, and other musical masters. The director ends the composi- tion with a thrilling ending chord. Can this be Leonard Bernstein or the Boston Symphony? No, it's the Roosevelt Junior High School Orchestra, this year composed entirely of ninth graders. These students have worked hard for two years with Mr. Zimmerman and Miss Green and have finally reached the top by playing in the fall concert at West High and the spring concert here. Needless to say, Roosevelt is proud of its ninth grade aggregation. Every fifth hour at precisely thirteen minutes to one, the musicians are seated and ready to be tuned. This class has worked hard all year in preparation for these concerts. It's their chance to show their skill in the widest interpretations from classical to show music. 99 Intermediate Musicians Note,9 Well The Eighth Grade Orchestra has abusy year preparing for the important position of concert orchestra next year. These sixty-two students have full orchestratwice a week with Mr. Zimmerman. The rest of the week they divide into the string and wind sections. They have improved greatly since those first days in seventh grade and their music is much more advanced, but these musicians take it in their stride. The Ninth Grade Band is under the direction of Mr. George Trumbull. It is an elective class and the competition is extremely keen. Newbolt '3 Good blocking technique displayed by Sheryl Abel. Get that ball over! If you think boyy basketball sounds rough, you should attend an after school Girls' Athletic Association game. All girls participating play a really hard game. GAA gives all members Which includes every girl at Rooseveln a chance to perfect their skills at a wide variety of sports, to practice teamwork, and to referee. Ping pong, basketball, softball, swimming, and volleyball are included in the sports curri- culum for the girls. As a reward for playing, at the end of the year points gained in previous years are added up and each girl receives ac- cording to her participation, numerals, a letter, or a chevron. Intermuals Offer Variety OfSports Experience Last fall you may have seen a group of boys playing passball. These boys were participating in the Intermurals. They do not play on the Varsity Team, instead their efforts are centered around intermural competition. They play as hard as the boys on the Varsity Team, but they do not receive as much recognition as the regular team does. Hail thee thy basketball! Jack be nimble. The boys improve their form. The boys see plenty of action in the games.
