The purpose of this test is to determine whether ihe student's hearing is normal cr detective. Those taking the test are Elaine Hayes, Cynthia Bekseil and Beverly Tarro, ninth graders from homeroom 210. First aid and checking on sore throats, colds, etc., are but several duties of the nurse. Others consist of assisting the school dentist and physician in htheir various check-ups such as heart, eyes, teeth, and feet. Miss Larson gives counsel and advice to many students each day. Shown here are Roger Martin and Sharon Piymctie receiving her attention. Special Events Parents' night for American Education Week was held at our school November 8th. It was an opportunity for parents to Visit school, meet the teachers of their Children, inspect the facilities of the school, and materials used in instruction. In the picture at the left, Bob Frary, his dad, and Mrs. Batty are examining a set of Landmark history books in Miss Morrison's room. The books were purchased and presented by homerooms 209 and 313. The other picture shows Miss Crossman, third from the left, visiting with a large group of interested parents. One morning this year the teachers of Roose- velt all came to school an hour early. The reason was a special meeting to hear Mr. Olson of Columbia University explain about Citizen- ship Education. Breakfast was served in the cafeteria by Miss Normile's staff. 56 Throughout the school year various home- rooms held potluck suppers for members of the families in the homeroom. The purpose was to afford an opportunity for the parents of each room to meet each other and the homeroom teacher. Generally short programs were held afterward. This picture shows part of the group from room 207 eating in the cafeteria. Special Events THE NINTH GRADE MIXER This year Mr. Campbell acted as Chairman of a new committee in our school. Its purpose was to get the new ninth grade students better acquainted with the old ones. A m'ixer was given on Septem- ber 13, 1951, on the school playground. Events of the afternoon consisted of CI grand march, led by Miss Lanham and Mr. Czosnek, c1 snake dance, social dancing, and later refreshments were served. The following teachers assisted on the General committee:- Mr. Campbell, Mr. Van Barriger, Mr. Nut- ting, Miss Lanham, Miss Morse, Miss Crossmom, Miss McGuire, Mr. Fridly, Miss Crandall, Mr. Czos- nek, Mr. Waite, Miss Blackburn, and Mr. Annis. 1 57 n Special Events Sue Beckenbaugh of 9-217 was general manager of the magazine drive and is shown marking the daily record of each homeroom's progress on a large thermometer Chart outside of the cafeteria. Sue worked with Miss once and the Student Council members to make Roosevelt's first magazine drive a huge success. Roosevelt tried this idea out for the first time this year in place of the usual paper sale. The total money turned in was $4,413.85. This money was used to buy books and other equipment for the school. We all agree that Sue, Miss Joyce and the Student Council members deserve a big hand for the grand job they did in making the drive a worthwhile project. During the noon hour some of the students are shown examining the prizes on display which were possible to win in the magazine subscription drive Which our school sponsored this year. The winners of the awards in the magazine drive were, from left to right, Webb Stevens, 203; Gordy Sparks, 222; Nancy Thomas, 302, and Orcia Rodgers! 203. Gordy received the first prize of a new bicycle, Webb and Nancy each received radios, and Orcia Rodgers a portable stadium blanket. Special Events - October 5th The Howells, professional glass blowers, gave a paid assembly for the benefit of the Roughrtder. Using bottled gas and compressed air, all kinds of interesting objects were made for the audience to see. Now, this is the way to attain a Champion's technique, said Miss Phelen, former world's amateur champion typist, as she demonstrated her technique to the students of Roosevelt Junior High School. Eagerly looking for help- ful hints are Mr. Fridly and Mr. Czosnek of the Commercial Department, 59 David Rubtnoft, world famous Violinist, ap- peared at Roosevelt tor a surprise assembly on October 16. The entire audience was held spellbound throughout the whole assembly. We all agree that Rubinoft is a great violinist, as well as a marvelous showman. Special Events This picture shows the candidates for the Nine A class officers at the primary rally. Vonetta Ped- low is giving her speech, stating her qualifications for ninth grade class treasurer on the orange party. The primary elections went off with CI bang. Nearly twenty candidates threw their hats into the orange and blue party circles. On the left side of the stage are the blue party members and on the right are the orange. During the election of class officers the ninth grade students are given opportunity to use good governmental practices. Shown casting their votes in Mr. Huxhctm's room ctre Bob Condon and Bob Cook. Also in the picture are Gerald Knuth, Sally Saunders, Randall Larson, Pat Quiess, Dick Love, Iohn Ralston, and Leslie Engiehart. 60 This picture shows the voting in the primary election. All the voting was done in the Civics classes. This is in Mr. Fairbanks room where Eleanor Slive and Sheldon Liebovich are clerks, and Wayne Haggin is the judge. Standing is Brenda Peters, Who is going to cast her vote. Special Events The campaign managers spoke on behalf of their candidates at the second rally. Mae Mirto is speaking for Jeff McCoy, who is running for secretary on the Orange party. Sandra Iseli did a grand job as chairman of both rallies. A highlight of this rally WCIS CI shower of suckers thrown down from the balcony by CI few of the Orange supporters. Maybe this helped the Orange party pull through. Who knows? Roosevelt is very proud to present the 9A officers. War- ren Johnson, Vice President; John Ralston, President; Iulie Applequist, Treasurer, and left McCoy, Secretary. By the way, the Orange party swept through to win a straight ticket, for a change. 61 Special Events The Christmas Vespers were presented by the school's choral groups on December 16. The Orchestral Ensemble accompanied them. A human Christ- mas tree and a vested choir sang many favorite Christmas carols. In the Nativity scene the heralding angels are shown paying tribute to the Madonna. This impressive scene brought the annual Christmas program to a close. 62 Special Events Our school sponsors two publications. We, the Roughriders, are proud to present this picture of the Teddy's News Staff for 1951-1952. They are, 1eft to right, seated, Sue Swanson, Linda Duncctnson, Sandra Ise1i, Sue Beckenbotugh, Judy Hartman, Mary Washburn, Beverly Briggs, Brenda Peters, and Sarah Stevens. Standing, Clara Swenson, Bob Condom, John RCI1ston, Sam Black, Bob Cox, Chuck Thomas, Mrs. Phyllis Stringer, adviser, Iirn Tague, David Baum, Wanda Perry, and David McClelland. This year the Teddy's News Staff has lived up to its usual record by giving Roosevelt some of the best papers we have ever had. A few of their many undertakings have been their two assembhes along with the big Teddy's News Queen Contest. u The Teddy's News assembly was c1 mournful affair. The staff members were mourning the death of poor Queen Teddy and promised to do their best to keep King Teddy happy by presenting the best Teddy's News they have ever had. Tears were shed by the barrels during the performance. 63 Special Events One of the many duties of the editorial staff each year is to assist in taking student pictures for the Roughrider. Some of their duties were to give instructions as to where students sign their name on the yellow envelopes. Others helped the photographer on the stage to keep the en- velopes in consecutive numerical order. In this picture homeroom 99 is shown entering the audi- torium with Miss McLean, While Shelley Finley explains what to do. Before ads for the Roughrider can be sold a great deal of organizational work must be done. The girls shown above are organizing the list of prospective advertisers to avoid having more than one member of the advertising staff visit them. The girls seated ctre Sherryelle Bowman, Judy Higgins, Dixie Dean, and Barbara Beck. Standing are Delores Plumb, Charma Trimble, Marlene Anderson, Carol Adams, and Marilee Peilo. On December 4th the Roughrider Editorial Staff put on an assembly to start the subscription drive. In the above picture the staff is shown sing- ing the Routhider Song, which brought the CIS- sernbly to a hilarious ending. They are, left to right, Jerry Hallstrom, Julie Applequist, Ion Wells, Sue Brands, Warren Johnson, Betty Strachan, Roger Welden, and Shelley Finley. Vonetta Ped- low, the other member of the staff, was absent. 64 In the cooking scene Ion Wells and Roger Welden expertly mixed the ingredients for a delicious coke. That part which tell on the floor and was lctter mixed in, only added to the deli- cacy of the finished product. Sad to say, when the would-be cooks tasted their delectable mix- ture they experienced pangs of discomfort. Special Events The annual Roughrider-Teddy's News party turned out to be a huge success. This year it was held at the home of Shelley Fin- ley, whose parents graciously opened the basement of their home to the gang. Games were played, refreshments served, including cookies made by the girls on the two staffs, and a good time was had by all. This year's 9A class play was a hilarious comedy, Rest Assured, by Donald Payton, and di- rected by Mr. Waite. Mr. Morlock, a frustrated business man, was played by Alan Riddiford and he had quite a time proving to the rest of the family that he was being haunted by a ghost. A capacity audience forgot their troubles as they roared with laughter. March 7th our basketball squad clashed with the Roosevelt faculty. The game was played for those who subscribed to our yearbook in the first week of the drive sponsored by the Student Council. There was a full house present. The teachers won the game 15 to 14 with the help of the referee and the scorekeeper. We are proud to present the Teddy's News Queen, Joanne Emery, and her two attendants, Pat Terranova and Barbara Riddiford. They were chosen by the votes of the students. Each homeroom chose c1 candidate for the first nomi- nation. A committee of teachers and students decided on four girls from the seventh grade, five from the eighth, and five from the ninth grade. Students then voted for one candidate from each level. The final voting made Iocmne queen, With Pat and Barbara the runners-up. The coronation was February 15. 66 Classroom Activities Mary Munson and Delores Newman on the left, Rosalie Hill and Marilyn Richardson on the right, are working on their projects in Clothing A. Miss Knott is supervising them. The girls in Clothing A, an 8th and 9th grade elective class, make garments out of cotton for themselves. Some of the projects are dresses, jumpers, blouses, and skirts. rThey can also make things out of corduroy. Here is Ct group from the 6th hour class. In this picture Mr. Czosnek is explaining the fundamentals of typing to a beginning class. Intentiy listening are Margaret Catron cmd Har- riet Bunting. The posters in the background represent the value of good grooming for office workers. 67 A knowledge of rock formation has an ap- preciation value in every day life. Here, Mr. Owens is giving Margot Johnson, Norman Grimes, and Marcia Crosby a chance to study and identify rock samples from cm interesting collection of rocks. Classroom Activities Here you see the class of 8-313 in Room 209 studying history. As you see, they work in groups to get the work done quickly and more efficiently. These groups work under the Phillips 66 plan. Ectch group has c1 chairman and reporter. After group planning, CI history class in 8-209 dramatizes the signing of the Paris Peace Treaty after the Revolutionary War. From left to right, the actors are Mary Mead, Sandra Grandquist, Tom Rehwald, Ierry Seinwill, Margaret Beers and Phyllis Varnum. 68 Classroom Activities These promising students enjoy working in free brush. This is only one of the many types of work they do in the art class. They are as follows, at the first table, Dixie Gilligan, Regina Milne, Barbara Belknop, and Ioom Hoover; at the second, Fred Althouse and Sheldon Liebovich, and in the background Pot Quies and Audrey Boston. The Roughrider art staff introduced Ct new form of art to be used on the division pages of the Roughrider. The mobiles are suspended in air by wires and strings, and are perfectly balanced so that they are constantly moving. The mobiles were to be photographed, but mysteriously disappeared during the Christmas vocation. 69 Classroom Activities Carole Adams, Ronald Bertchie, John Rancyl and James West are inspecting ct new set of history reference books with Mrs. Anq, the librarian. Each year the library buys hundreds of new books which must be processed by Mrs. Ang and her student library assistants. 70 A 7th grade music class in Room 220 is having cm Amateur Talent Show. Verlyce Grabow, Marilyn Freed, and Judy Gillum are giving CI vocal number. They are CIC- companted by Miss Williams at the piano. In this picture Hobart Erickson and Agatha Lotto are Checking out library books from student librarian Pat Lozdoskt. Each period, one assistant works at the desk. The student librarian checks out books for CI week at Q time. In different library classes the amount of student librarians varies depending on the class. When books are returned it is the job of the assistants to return the books to the shelf for further use. The assistants are cts- signed to different sections of the shelves to Check at least twice c1 week. Classroom Activities No more roving through the halls. Our mighty hall monitor system, under Mr. Wibom's supervision, swings into its second year of checking noise and confusion in halls. Here monitor, Io Ebbings, checks hall pass of Tom Meyer, CIS sixth hour monitor, Captain Fred Derr, watches. The 9th grade art classes usually help With the scenery for plays and programs. Some of the 9th graders in Miss Crcmdall's lst hour art class are shown here helping to prepare the scenery for the Christmas pro- gram. From left to right they are, Keith Hoeg, Barbara Belknap, Regina Milne, Sheldon Liebovich, Karen Steward, Joan Hoover, cmd Sally Hoel. 71 Here are shown some 7th grade students under the direction of Miss Williams singing Christmas carols. Caroling was one of the mctny activities done during the Christmas season to give the school the Christmas spirit. Classroom Activities One of the most popular electives for ninth graders this year was machine shop. Mr. 'Wibom taught the boys how to make many useful items with the lathe and other machines. Here Joe White, Iim Morse, Glen Ronk, and Jim Price watch George Arnold use the lathe. This year you may have seen some of the boys walking through the halls carrying pr'oj- ects that they made in wdodshop. In woodshop V class, eighth and ninth grade students are taught how to use power saws, wood lathes, electric sanders, etc. In the rear of the picture Mr. Shumwczy is shown answering a question of Dick Babcock's. In the front, left to right, are Albert Havens, Gene Kent, and Wally Gibson. 72 It looks as though this group of boys in Mr. Woods' printing class are really taking their work seriously. In printing the boys are taught the fundamentals of type setting. Students are offered printing as cm exploratory course. Looking in on one of Mr. Annis' mechanical drawing classes we see CI group of students practicing lettering. In mechanical drawing boys are given a chance to see it they like making drawings of objects to exact scale. Mechanical drawing is required of 0:11 seventh grade boys for one semester. If they like it, they have or chance to take another semester of it in eighth grade. Classroom Activities Shown, left to right, are Rosemarie Hobart, Janice Stenholm, Kory Sohner, who are imper- sonating the Mills Brothers, singing Be My Life's Companion. In dramatics, students do dramatizations, learn oral speaking, make-up, and the parts of the stage along with stage terms. ' - The 8th grade girls in Mrs. Dittloff's Home Arts class study a unit on Good Grooming, Skin Care, and the selection of make-up. This was being discussed when the photographer visited the group. Various beauty preparations are being sampled by members of the group to see Which meet With their approval. 73 Theresa Rotello is shown here pantomiming Al Iolson singihg Swanee River. This took place in Mr. Waite's sixth hour dramatics class, after a study of impersonations. A group of girls in Miss Stauff's 6th hour cooking class are attempting to make steak supreme. They are, left to right, Pat Delaney, Fern Wescott, Ruth Pixler, Marilyn Whitney, and Deloris Neuman. It tasted delicious, naturally. Classroom Activities The Masque Club is an organization here at Roosevelt for students interested in dramatic activities. The club, under the leadership of Mr. Waite! consists of about 45 students from the 7th, 8th and 9th grades. A few representatives from each grade are looking over a selection of plays. They are, left to right, Mae Mirto, Vice-President; Paul Van Sickle; Alan Riddiford, President; Jerry Fowler; Judy Hartman, Secretary; Sonja Stokstadl and Tony Bradley. This Iunior Red Cross school chest was packed by the homerooms and will be sent to a school overseas. The Iunior Red Cross council, composed of students from the homerooms, planned the activity. The chest was made by the woodshop. The council members shown filling the chest are Kathleen Lyddon, Terry Iohnson, Carol Cleveland, Barbara Riddiford, Ca- role Thombloom, and Clareece Gedeist. 74 Classroom Activities Alan Riddiford is demonstrating the important points of CI pulley to Nancy Jones and Sharon Williams. This exhibit helped the ninth grade science students in Mr. Calvert's room to better understand pulleys and inclined planes. Pulleys and inclined planes come under the Classification of simple machines. Simple machines are the most important tools of the second semester. The aim of this study is to help the students in everday use of home appliances. Harriet Leber accepts a deposit from Donna Stevens, while Milton Block waits his turn. Marjorie Thurlwell is writing in her workbook. The students take turns being tellers behind one of the three grills in Room 210. The handling of money, bank deposits, and forms, as well as the principles of banking as CI business, are but several of the practices that are taught in today's general business classes. 75 Comets Wayne Berglund Reuse Binger Bob Boyer Barton Carlson Bob Condon Sam Goldenberg Keith Harter Bob Haskins Lee Lundberg David McClelland Dick Wright Lynn Zaugq Music OUR CONCERT BAND Horns Bob Compton Terry Keegom Trombones Bradley Brauer Thomas Hansen Richard Sampson Saxophones Larry Cole Robert Cook John Holladay 76 David Mackey Ronnie Miller Barton Wilcox Basses Randall Larson Steve Whittemore Baritone Hobart Erickson Flutes Barrie Burridge Gerald Knuth Roger Martin Clarinets Gary Bengston Jim Bennett John Carmichael Bob Cox Iohn DiGiovanni Carl Gulbrcmdsen David Iacobs Irwin Kratz Iay Muntz Music OUR CONCERT BAND Charles Newberg Henry Pahlcxs David Proudfoot John Ralston LeRoy Ratz Douglas Reed Alan Riddiford Fred Saunders Ben Schleicher Dick Scott 77 Iim Sullivan Bradley Wood Percussion David Baum Richard Brouqh Torn LaFranka Elwood Lundeen Charles Neth Jim Smallwood Violins Iudy Bergstrom Delores Bisbee Margaret Catron Sara Cummings Leona Danielson Sarabeth Dixon Music OUR CONCERT ORCHESTRA Kathleen Pettis Dorothy Stotler Betty Strachcm Sue Swanson Paul Terrcmova Carol Ward Sandra Worall Nancy Eklund James Plock Mona Munson Jean Schaefer Cellos Morilynne Gersten Iohn Hedderich Linda Green Dorothy Hertzberg - Lucille Heckmcm Gayle Holmquist Violas Sue Knight Florence Kirk Sue Beckenbaugh Ann Marlowe Kent Kunz ' Janice Dyreson Nancy Schraiber 78 OUR CONCERT ORCHESTRA Basses Oboe Sandra Iseli Sandra Torrisi Mary Washburn Bassoon Bob Sharp Flutes Linda Butler Hem F Bob Hollingsworth BOb KirprtTiCk Ted Loy Clarinets Trumpets Carl Arco Ruth Albano Barb Mammenga Mike Cassaro Peggy Fall Judy Dyerson 79 Tom Wilcox Gordon Justice Trombones Kay Hoover Madeline Jewell Barb Pearce Percussion Vera Butt Rae Hogan Kay Hoover Diane Malley The Eighth Grade band is a continuation of the organization started in the Seventh Grade. Every year from sixty to seventy seventh grade boys enter bcmd activities offered by our school. By the end of the year they become cm organzation able to present c1 few numbers at the annual Band Concert. 80 cf 'Im The Eighth Grade String and Wind classes combine for orchestra training twice weekly. The musi- cal and technical advancement of these second year students shows in their ability to play excerpts from familiar works of such great composers as Handel and Haydn. The Seventh Grade String and Wind classes under the direction of Miss Green and Mr. Hall, re spectively, meet together once a week for orchestral training. The majority of these students begin their instrumental training at Roosevelt and make their first public appearance in the Annual Spring Orchestra Concert. 81 Extra Curricular Groups Teddy's Trillers Teddy;s Trillers is a singing organization, under the direction of Miss McGuire. Some of their duties were to plan the year's activities and keep the points recorded. The girls are, left to right: Theresa Rotello, Shelley Finley, Patti Terrcmovcr, Lou Ann Tuck, and More Mirto. One of the G.A.A. activities was square dancing twice a week. In the picture above some of the square dancers are shown going through one of their many steps. Shown are Miss Lanham, Sally Souders, Wilma Perch, Jackie Brower, Marion Tally, Mary Brower, Ellen Pettit. Four girls of the Junior Life Saving Class are shown above practicing some of the carries. The girls are Marguerite Donze and Linda Dun- canson doing the cross chest cctrry, Shelley Finley and Brenda Peters doing the head carry. These girls have learned the fundamentals of Life Saving and Water Safety and should be able to save c1 life if necessary. A Junior Red Cross Life Saving Class was held twice a week the first semester. There were 27 girls that entered and completed the course. Marguerite Donze, Linda Duncanson, Shelley Finley, and Brenda Peters are shown above demonstrating the tired swimmer's carry. Pictured above are the G.A.A. student leaders. These girls were trained by Miss Lanhcxm to referee games, keep score, and help conduct the G.A.A. program in general. Third row: Sally Watlington, Iecm Layng, Janet Ellis, Leah Bryant, Marlene Gusse, Karleen Eastwood, Delores Plumb, Barbara Hardy, Maida Wallace. Maybe some of the success of this year's basketball team was due to the rousing efforts of the cheerleaders. All through the season our Cheerleaders kept the students on their feet cheering Roosevelt on to Victory. Almost every night you could come into the gym and see them earnestly practicing their cheers for the coming games. The girls who did such 0 wonderful job in keeping the spirit up around Roosevelt were: Sue Swanson, Mae Mirto, once Allen, Charlotte Clark, and Susan Knight. 85 The camera turned its roving eye upon a bank of enthusiastic Roosevelt rooters at the first Roosevelt-Lincoln game. The crowd is cm- ticipating the 45-35 victory which the Roosevelt cagers so nobly turned out that afternoon. Our Basketball Team Front row: Jim Young, Rex Parker, Fred Boshelot, Bob Young, Warren Iohnson, Mark Frid1ey. Top row: Iohn McFarland, Tom B1c1ke,Lc1Verne Sherer, B111 Olson, David McClelland, Steve Whitte- more, Doug Reed. This year's bosketba11 team coached by John Young concluded the season with cm 8-5 record. Losing five games, Roosevelt dropped two in overtime, one to Linco1n and one to Washington. Our cagers also lost to West High by one point and to East by two. Although the Roosevelt Hoopsters didn't win the championship we can say we made it plenty miserable at times for both Lincoln and Washington. Throughout the season our basketball squad scored 508 points while our opponents scored only 434. On our home floor we took 4 and lost 3, scoring 326 points to our opponents 263. On the road we won 4 and lost two, scoring 182 and having 171 scored against us. THE 1951 SEASON Roosevelt's football team started out the season this year as an inexperienced eleven. Ironically enough our first opponent was Lincoln. The lack of playing experience plus capitalization on the breaks by Lincoln put Roosevelt on the short end of a 40-0 ball game. After this set back Roosevelt never did seem to recover fully. Plagued by injuries, the team was also hampered by lack of good reserve strength. In each game the Roosevelt team ironed out some of its previous mistakes but still did not quite function up to par. The game against East High showed that we had Will and determi- nation. In the second half of this game Roosevelt seemed to find themselves, but it was too late to win the game. The second Lincoln game found Roosevelt leading at the half 7 to 6, but Lincoln found a weakness in our defense and scored three touchdowns in the second half to win the game 26 to 7. By the second Washington game Roosevelt functioned as a ball club. They outplayed, outclassed, and outfouqht Washington for three quarters, but failed by one point to end the game in a tie. Next year we are looking forward to a better season and sweet revenge. 91 Even though Roosevelt didn't do too much scoring this year we still had or lot of hard charg- ing backs. In the first row we see, left to right: Iohn Ralston, Iim Young, Tom Nolan, Tom Gleichman, and Mark Fridley. In the top row: Fred Derr, George Arnold, Rex Parker, and Bobby Young. This year we had Ct group of hard working and confident ends with which our offense was largely built around. They are, from left to right: Bob Cox, Bob Condom, Don Grabow, Steve Whittemore, Tony Gayton, Fred Boshelct, and Alan Riddiford. In this picture we see at the far left Mr. Fair- banks, who was assistant coach and helped officiate our games.
