Weldg Miss Florence Penstone, M.A. Solving problems in Miss Hollem's flfth hour algebra class Q1 MATHEMATICS Today more than any other time mathematics is of the utmost importance. Many occupations of tomorrow are based on not only the advanced forms of geometry and algebra but on the fundamentals that so few people consider bothering to learn. This year the beginning steps in all classes of mathematics were learned before going on to more advanced work. The idea of accuracy has been an important part of our Work. A problem is right or wrong. Short cuts in solving problems were introduced. These the students like very much. 13

Snyder Exhibit of story-book characters studied in English classes. ENGLISH and LANGUAGE All work this year in English was planned so that pupils might have experience and practice in the art of reading, speaking, and writing the English language effectively. Units in silent and oral reading, literature, oral and written composition, instrumental grammar, usage, and spelling made up the course required for all grades. The importance of English was stressed because -in business and other specialized contacts correct English, speech, and spelling mark success. ' :k :Za :k :R Courses this year in language were offered to eighth and ninth graders and gave them not only knowledge of the language but a better understanding of the people whose language was studied. French, Spanish, German, and Latin were the ninth grade electives. 12

SOCIAL SCIENCE The Social Science department sought to teach the students the real meaning of citizen ship, to point out the blessings of liberty which our forefathers made possible, and to make -each student conscious of his duty to his country and ready to solve the problems in future years. Educational movies and the class use of newspapers played an important part in the understanding of our present world problems. 14
