ENGLISH and LANGUAGE All work this year in English was planned so that pupils might have experience and practice in the art of reading, speaking, and writing the English language effectively. Units in silent and oral reading, literature, oral and written composition, instrumental grammar, usage, and spelling made up the course required for all grades. The importance of English was stressed because -in business and other specialized contacts correct English, speech, and spelling mark success. ' :k :Za :k :R Courses this year in language were offered to eighth and ninth graders and gave them not only knowledge of the language but a better understanding of the people whose language was studied. Many occupations of tomorrow are based on not only the advanced forms of geometry and algebra but on the fundamentals that so few people consider bothering to learn. This year the beginning steps in all classes of mathematics were learned before going on to more advanced work. The idea of accuracy has been an important part of our Work. A problem is right or wrong. Short cuts in solving problems were introduced. These the students like very much. 13 M, j : . px N . fix W' , ,l J, Mr. Larson's fifth hour social studies class saluting the Hag, Miss Anne Morrison, B.S.g Mr. Ralph Keltner, M.A.g Miss Claire Scone, Ph.B.g Mr. Harold Hux- ham, M.S .... GENERAL SCIEQNCE To familiarize the students with science in their immediate surroundings was the aim of the General Science department this year. Because of the war and its needs many valuable inventions and discoveries have been made in the field of chemistry, medicine, bacteriology, dentistry, and meterology. Many of these new discoveries have been brought before the students. Emphasis was placed upon health from as practical a viewpoint as possible, so that all might be health conscious continually. Students have often discovered new fields of interest or hobbies from their study of science. 16 Mr. Arthur A. Annis. B S., head of departmentg Mr, Oscar W. Anderson Mr. Thomas Bjorge, B.S. 'ed the 5H5l'E' meeting at which Burdine Tobin, of St. Louis, Mo., spoke on Catholic practices in planning for a service- man's family, and Ruth Michel of Dubuque, Ia., described placement of Catholic children for adoption. Miss Michel emphasized the in- ability of the institutions to keep the records of illigitimate children confidential, placing part of the blame on the lack of uniform pro- cedure for birth certificates through- out the countryf V At the afternoon session, Alice R. May, of the Michigan social welfare commission, Detroit, spoke on the value of institutions and the train- ing they give the children. She de- clared the institution should be built for the ichild, not the child for the institution. She also said that if the average time a- child remained in an institution was more than two and a half years, then the institu- tion was not doing a good job. Details Reorganization Plan for Street' Dept. A plan for reorganizing the city street department to improve ef- ficiency was outlined to the city council streets and alleys committee last night by Ragnar Levine, newly appointed superintendent of streets. Levine and Acting City Engineer Ted Johnson were given full author- ity by the committee to proceed with the proposed reorganization. Levine declared foremen now are required to spend too much time traveling between headquarters and work sites, thus leaving work crews without adequate supervision. As a result, he said, workers are often idle through no fault of their own. He proposed a clerk in the stree department office be designated t prepare work schedules and mak arrangements to have labor, ma terials, and equipment on hand a job sites when required.
