A class of 24 is chosen each year. After the exchange group has been determined the two classes become acquainted through the exchange of letters and pictures. High light of the year's study comes when the two groups come face to face with each alt ernately acting as host and guest. The ex change this year is with Concord, Massach usetts. Study program for the year covers a wide range and is determined by interests of the membership. Small committees are formed 56 and they present their studies to the entire class by way of films bulletin boards oral reports guest speakers and f1eld trips Unique 1n the organization IS the fund raismg All money required for the ex change trip is earned, by individual and group project. Some of their best money makers have been bake and rummage sales, selling of Christmas greens, concessions at football games and the annual County Fair. Far from being selfish in their activities, members of WAAC class take part in various community activities such as the March of Dimes. Through the Junior Red Cross they have made favors for hospitals and this school year organized Operation Santa Claus. In this project, the group brought Christmas, complete with dinner, tree and presents to a needy family of the community. , If I C . gj 5 ' , C J C ' ' C ge I A uni . I . In . 5 il 1 e . 3 v i . Our school paper has won eighteen consecutive All American ratings, which is the highest rating possible given by National Scholastic Press Association. It has also won four Medalist or top honors from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association as well as state honors from Michigan State College. The Wy News has begun many new things which have been followed by many other high school newspapers. One of these is the print- ing of the paper on news print to make it look more like a daily newspaper. The Wy News has also instituted the plan of a full sized newspaper. James E. Most coveted in the field of journalism is the honor of member- ship in the Quill and Scroll Society. Scholastic requirement is that they be in the upper third of their class. They must have done sup- erior work in writing, editing or business management and be re- commended by the publication ad- visor and approved by the executive secretary of the Society, whose headquarters is Northwestern University. Debating Roosevelt's Debating Class is made up of students who wish to learn the art of speech-making plus a knowledge of world issues They attempt to convince class- mates of their point of view by logic and fact. They meet once a month with other BCL schools to discuss these issues. The big project of the year is send- ing speakers to a mock U.N. Assembly at Hillsdale in April. Future Teachers Club Members of the Future Teachers Club are young high school students, who are looking forward to a career in teaching. Programs of the Roosevelt group are varied, but the general purpose is for entertainment as well as a study of the vocational aspects. Field trips are taken to different college campuses during the year, particularly to those colleges where preparation for teaching is rather emphasized. Mr. George Bun- nell is sponsor of the organization, The aim of the Future Nurses Club is to acquaint girls with the nursing profes- sion. Talks on certain fields of nursing and a new project of doing Volunteer work in t.he hospital has given the girls a chance to have contact with patients. The Ski Club has been in existence since about 1946 and has grown to the size of forty-four members. When the club began, the group took trips to Cadillac and places close by, just for weekends. Now the group with Miss Lynn Vendien and a man sponsor pick up their skiis and bus up to Boyne Mountain Lodge for a week usually at the end of February. Their trip is very educational as well as entertaining. They have conservation talks in the morning and a two hour' study period in the afternoon: but still the en- joyment of skiing and the outdoor swim- ming pool, which was constructed last year, occupies most of the time. How does the Ski Club finance their trip? By having bake sales, rummage sales, dances, selling things of school nature, a concession at the County Fair, and the proceeds of the Spotlights on Parade divided with the Band. The amount of money a member pays to go on the trip is regulated by a point system. Points are based on how much someone helps on projects. The Ski Club meets every Tuesday nights at 6:30 in 110 with movies and lectures on how to ski. There is always one parents night just before the trip.
