Board of Education We, the graduating class of 1953,wish to express our sincere gratitude to the members of the Board of Education for the service they have performed for us in the past four years. They used their power in securing our long-awaited scoreboard, and a promise of lights for the field. They were alsoinstrumental in connection with our lovely, new, trophy case. When understanding citizens of a community give up part of their free time to further the development of our public schools, it is bound to be a better system. We would also like to extend a welcome hand to the new Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Jenema. This was the year that a Republican President was inaugurated, the west coast finally beat the Big 10 in the Rose Bowl and most important of all, this is the year we graduated. Our first impression of the school was perhaps not all that it should have been, for we must have looked like one-armed sleep walkers the day our class rings arrived. This impression, however, was corrected when we threw our first dance, PIGSKIN PARADE. We really kept the school on their toes as we put on another dance, THE SENIOR FAREWELL. This was our tribute to the graduating class of that year. Our Spook House at the County Fair gave the Hcreeps' ' in our class a chance to shine. And shine they did. We turned the school from shrieks of terror to shrieks of laughter when the curtain parted on our Junior Play, OUR HEARTS WERE YOUNG AND GAY. Everyone was in the pink as we presented our J-Hop WE PREFER PARIS. After walking through the Arch de Trumph, our eyes fell upon the Eifel Tower which gave that Parisian feeling to a beautifully decorated gym. Now we are seniors, and our first project was the Homecoming Dance. The dance with its Queen and Court along with a winning football team made homecoming all that it should be. 7 'f P L 'rfb 46 i. I l In The Year 19. 5 The actors in our class again took over as we presented our Sr. Play, PINK STRING AND SEALING WAX. The Pink string was turned into Xmas ribbon and sealing wax to the glue on Xmas card envelopes as we threw our Xmas Cabaret Dance, THE HOLIDAY RUSH. January 22 wasanight of mixed emotions as 77 of our class graduated. lt's rumored that many received 2 certificates, one headed congratulations, and the other greetings Many of the January grads returned, however, to help make our Sr. Prom a big hit. The wall of the gym actually shimmered and shook as beautiful harem girls carried out our theme of the Arabian Nights. We called this, our final class activity, A THOUSAND AND ONE NIGHTS. We got our first clue that graduation was drawing near when we had to choose our class colors. Many of the mechanicalboys wanted Primor and Chrome but Navy blue and Powder blue finally won out. The January Class colors had been Wine and White. lt's now June 11, the night of our graduation. Many of our class must feel like this year's Republican party, for we, like the Republicans, finally made it. As you look through this annual, remember the faces and names of our graduating class. For I am sure that before very long, many will have made a name for them- selves in drawing BLUEPRINTS OF PROGRESS! Under the direction of Charles Burkett and Joan Bates, the play was a great success. The novelty of the setting was a factor. It took place in The Cloisters , an insane asylum. The point the play meant to bring out was that there is not much difference between people in an institution and so-called sane ones outside in the world. Laughs were plentiful in this three-act comedy by John Patrick. The three Savages, contriving a way in which to secure their mother's fortune, had her admitted into 'tThe Cloistersf' After much question of her insanity, they were taught a lesson. The guests in the institution were: Fairy May Wirginia McWhirterJ, Hanibal CArnold Zeffl, Jeffrey fBill Leibengoodj, Mrs. Paddy fPat Parkerj, and Florence fLouise Kirchnerl. Ethel Uean Scruggsl, Titus Uerry Simpsonl, Samuel lCarl Krousel, and Lilly Bell QGretchen Hoffmanj played the Savage family. On the staff of the institution was Miss Wilhelmina flrene Kurkowskil, and Dr. Emmett tBob Rigginsj, 57 f i TE DDY BEAR 'Ms f A ff ,Q0015 .A K, ff ' f,. 1. , L Le: Future quares ,,, ff , V f Y ' , in Her term paper IS vmlsdes' yi v1 ewng' We D2.nC1ng 1S L-,UP Future Waxtmg for Santa Claus. such fun Wrestlers D Beauty not duty calls ,S hear YOU On a mllk dlet Better ba Ck up Slster, No sleep got mn the1r eyes ..- we ox SYQQQQ QQXX -3,1 x new all X Q0 neckmg f Z clung ef 'jam I f .. Government of, by and for the students - that is the Roosevelt Student Union. Officers are elected each semester following a rip- roaring campaign in which the candidates and their managers appeal for votes at a special assembly. Nominees are selected by the RSU in conformity to certain qualifications. Legislative body of the Union consists of one representa- tive from each English class. Meetings are held weekly and much of the work is done by committees, each having a definite function. Many problems are worked on during the semester and some have been such as to bring improvement to the school as well as to the student body. Sponsors of the organization are Robert Rattray and Maynard Alfstad. an-'. 0 1' 9 1 1 xw R. S. U. at work! This cry was raised early in the year by members of the WAACS and was repeated frequently, reaching a full crescendo as the 24 travelers and their sponsors boarded the train for their exchange visit with the students of Middletown, Kentucky. A month previous, the Wyandotters had acted as hosts to the youths from the Blue Grass state. During the year a rather complete study was made of the geology, industry, transportation, culture and social life of the Wyandotte of former years. Library research, reports, slides, movies, field trips and talks by prominent men and women of the city gave the class a kaleidoscopic picture of life in this city, past and present and enabled them to be the perfect hosts. The study was also a most interesting one for the Wyandotte youth and made them extremely proud of their city. This was the eighth WAAC class. The project, begun in 1946, through the joint efforts of the Junior Red Cross and the late Carl Hardwicke, has had a most remarkable career and is one of the outstanding achievements of Roosevelt High. Finances have to be considered in a project of this type, but members of the class worked together on many money-raising schemes to fill the exchequer. There were paper drives, rummage sales, bake sales, county fair, candy stand and football concessions and one of the most popular of WAAC possessions was the over-sized piggy bank in which they collected necessary funds. For several years Mrs. Hardwicke has carried on the project and has given it dignified and friendly direction. .-IL. Planning their trip. Winter is the best time of the year for members of Roosevelt's Ski club, for that means lots of fun and thrills. No sitting on the beach in the Florida sun for them. They had far rather plunge head first in a snow drift. One of the prize trips of the year is the journey to Boyne Mountain lodge for their winter recreation. Hours are spent in waxing their skiis in order to make them slide better. This year's trip was highly successful, although Joan Zanley hobbled around school for several days with a sprained ankle. JL l .. -O-49 Doing the ballet on skiis might well be the title of this picture. It happens to be a kick turn executed by Pat Zasadny at Boyne Mountain. 64 A , Y mm.UW SCRML 5-5' .J il ' sl xi Seated Ann Hartshorn tH1stor1anJ Jeanene Haynes tTreasurerJ Janet Lundstedt fPres1dentJ Ann Powell KVICC Presxdentl Gayle Brancheau tSecretaryJ Row One Mar11ou Bache Sue Potter Carol Schafer Arlene Sackett Joanne Sheets Nancy Lowe Sh1rley Wllson, Pat Gxlghrlst Gall Menefee Joyce Jelacslty Carol Bessey Maurxne Keller Anna Aust1n Pat Ka1ser Joan Johnson Row Two Theresa Rushlow, Delores Schnau Barbara Beaub1en, Barbara Love She1laMacLe1lan Dorothy Mayrand Jean Marxe Schave, Pat Lonmewskx Gretchen Hoffman, Lourse Eberlme Joan Long Nancy Schave Mar1an Morche, E1leen Exner Row Three Pat Cole Beverly Cooley Patr1c1a Edgett, Marge Bardon1 Pat Corless Chr1st1ne Bardom Mary Terry Barbara Elsesser, Mary Lou Lak1n Gretchen Wagner Mar1lyn Maloch Pat Zasadny Pansy Hagan, Bern1ce Mart1n, Barbara Fauser Row Four Barbara Schne1der JoAnn Oberfranc Mary Grondzlel Sylv1a Kurtz Paul1ne Dye Joan Shonk M1ss Hollxs Powell QSponsorJ M1ss Wanda Walker CSponsorl, Amta Commerclal Club M1ss Wanda Walker and M1ss Holhs Powell tSponsorsJ Row One Sharon Prxce Joan P1zz1ment1 Nancy Myers Mamxe Grordano Joan Longfellow, Fanny Wh1te Dolores Semetko Carol Raush Dora Shepard Joan Schaffer, Jack1e Newell Florence F1sher Janet Murray Row Two Jean Rushlow Dorothy Callahan Kay Gr1ff1th Joan B11zman Delores Quackenbush Joan Zanley M1r1am Stelzer Darlene Barett Emahe Glordano, Marc1a Coffee Paula Mmor Betty Toboy Marllyn Gr1ff1n Margaret Fugate Esther Chepllck Joan Schuster Row Three Sue Dye Pat Drobnak Sh1rley Steele Amta Barnaby Irma Stoddard Beverly Bruso Nancy Ambal Sue W11l1amson Georgxna Hole, Mar11yn Vent, Norma Brown Mary Brod1e Irene Kurkowskr Row Four Donna Lauram Constance Slavln Janet Schubert Beverly DeCoster, Betty Huddleston Glorxa Brochue Ann W1ld Joan Bateman Arlene McCrea Pat Pr1ce, Sherry Eastman Margaret Ha1gh Margaret Kulak Beverly Howe : . . 7 7 l 7 Q ' . 1 - : ' J 7 1 , , y . . . . , . , . 1 1 . 7 I 1 n 9 f : K 7 ' 7 . 7 I . ., . . , , , . . This trophy is awarded annually to the player voted the most valuable to his team by his teammates. Frank Nauyokas was the twentieth player to receive this trophy, which was put into circulation in 1933 by James G. Pinson, a former Wyandotte footballer. Mr. Pinson has a deep interest in Wyandotte athletic events and to enliven the interest of others he donated the trophy. Mr. Pinson played football during the more ruged days of the game, from 1898-1901, for Wyandotte High School, which is now Lincoln Junior High School. The grand old sport has certainly come a long way since then! A new trophy made its appearance this year as the post- season awards were being made. The trophy is the Veryl Speer Memorial Trophy, awarded to the most outstanding backfield player on the team. Ken Parish has the distinction of being the first to have his name inscribed on the trophy, and as a coincidence, he happens to be a cousin of the player for whom the trophy was donated. Syd Fogel, a teammate of Veryl Speer, presented the trophy, donated by the 1942 undefeated team in memory of the late Veryl Speer, who was killed in World War II, to Jack Henderson, who accepted it on behalf of the school. Three other members of the '42 team were also on hand for the presentation. They were Ed Mierkowicz, John McCrea, and Don Speer. To show their great appreciation and respect for their coach, Jerry Henderson, the members of the football team presented him withatrophy asa fitting climax to a great coaching career and a success- ful season. 89 lerry Henderson A great guy, Terr1f1c Coach, A swell person to work or These were Justafew of the comp11ments that the 52 football team pa1d to Jerry Henderson, the1r coach who IS retxrmg from the coachmg profess1on to be entered 1nto the Admlm strat1on end of the f1e1d of educatmon After John M1dd1esworth ret1red from the coachmg world 1n 1950 he left a blg gap wh1ch would take more than an ordmary coach to f111 Jerry Henderson stepped 1nto th1s gap and more than f111ed 1t, as he brought two champ1onsh1ps Prlor to becommg vars1ty coach, .Terry was the mentor for the freshman team for a number of years, and had the d1s t1nct1on of f1eld1ng a wmmng team for every game but one Whlch was agamst a rather lucky Ecorse team When .Terry took over the vars1ty squad he was work1ng wxth the same boys who had played for hxm 1n the1r freshman year The cond1t1ons were favorable for fxeldmg an out standmg team and that IS just what he d1d Of the exghteen games whlch were played durlng h1s tenure as head coach slxteen wound up IH the black wxth only Grand Rap1ds Un1on and Pontiac be1ng able to halt the mlghty Bears The Class of 53 salutes a truly great coach and a great man Jerry Henderson 90 He Built Our Team A great guy and a swell person to work for! Bear Ca ers Once again the Bear Cagers went under the axe as another unfruitful season is put into the record books. Although the Bears wound up in a tie for fourth place, one step higher than last year, they found the going pretty tough when it came to playing Highland Park, Fordson, and Grosse Pointe. Wyandotte reached the finals in the Regional Tournament held at Ann Arborg but Jackson, last year's jinx, proved to be too strong for the Bears. 95 Not th1s tlme Two more This is mine. Harriers The Bear Harriers staggered through a rather unsuccessful season this year, winning two out of eight meets. Allen Park and Hamtramck fell to the Bears while Pontiac, Farmington, Lincoln Park, Trenton, Monroe, and Royal Oak found easy pickings and enjoyed large helpings of Bear meat. The brightest spot for the Bears was the performance of Dave Schultz. Schultz was sixtieth in the State Meet out of afield of approximately two hundred. Fordson High School came to Wyandotte for the big day. They came, they saw, but we conquered. Anything else would have been most disappointing to the Bears and their followers as it was Homecoming Day. Queen for the game and the Homecoming Dance which followed was Nancy Lowe. Her attendants were Anne Powell and Nancy Anibal. For the first time in the history of the school, the queen was crowned by a former queen. Nancy Gee, queen of 1951 came to Wyandotte especially for the crowning and incidentally to see the Bears win. The Queen is Crowned! A Very Deserving Reward 1? Decorations, directed by the art department, were such as to give the dancers a feeling of unreality, as though they had been transported for the occasion to an enchanted land. Paintings of harem girls, sheiks with colorful turbans and baggy trousers, reclining figures, huge Aladdin lamps with mystic genii wafted forth on curling vapors made the walls of the gymnasium a never never land. A ceiling of blue, representing a moonlight night with stars peeping forth, added to the romantic touch Cas though one were neededl and colored lights shone on couple after couple in playing about the room. Magic carpets were present in sufficient numbers to carry the spirits of the dancers to other lands of enchantment. Until midnight the couples danced to the dreamy music of Herb Ross and his band and when Good Nightn was played the many dancers left the land of enchantment to return to reality declaring that the Senior Prom of 1953 was the very finest in the school's history.
