X 'r gm rr gf K 5-1. UUUTH SPEHHS From the chaotic depths of human wilderness there comes a voice, resonant, insistent, pleading, yet with a certain tremor of fear. It is the Voice of Yo,uth bidding for a chance to do its Apart in leading the despairing from the opportunity-destroying quicksands which have engulfed the weak in past generations. What is this cry of Youth? What does Youth desire? What are its demands '? Down through the ages there have always been two class - es--the old and the young. Each has raised its voice--the old offer words of wisdom, a wisdom gained from many experiencesg the young to urge, in an impulsive manner, that we get on with the job at hand. Youth today faces an uncertain future. The choice is not a happy one--if there be any choice at all. A natural harvest has been reaped from seeds sown by past genera- tions. The entire world is trigger-happy and a false move could engulf us into a conflict that might well sound the death knell of civilization. ' A new frontier rises on the horizon. It is one, not of geography, but rather of technology. Youth starves for opportunity, yetnever has there been such opportunity for any generation. The world of science, of medicine, of entertainment, of transportation, com- munication, literature, art and human relations offers fertile fields for worthy endeavors. Youth cries for security, yet many would exchange the golden rights that have formulated the very foundations of this nation's progress and strength, for the falsely gilded stanchions that have been labeled security. The greatest security comes from individual initiative. Security with- out liberty is slavery. Words of Young from Night Thoughts may well be the answer to Youth: Youth is not rich in time, it may be poor, Part with it as with money, sparingly, pay No moment but in purchase of its worth, And what it's worth, ask death-beds, they can tell. --James E.
