UUUTH SPEHHS From the chaotic depths of human wilderness there comes a voice, resonant, insistent, pleading, yet with a certain tremor of fear. It is the Voice of Yo,uth bidding for a chance to do its Apart in leading the despairing from the opportunity-destroying quicksands which have engulfed the weak in past generations. What is this cry of Youth? What does Youth desire? What are its demands '? Down through the ages there have always been two class - es--the old and the young. Each has raised its voice--the old offer words of wisdom, a wisdom gained from many experiencesg the young to urge, in an impulsive manner, that we get on with the job at hand. Youth today faces an uncertain future. The choice is not a happy one--if there be any choice at all. A natural harvest has been reaped from seeds sown by past genera- tions. The entire world is trigger-happy and a false move could engulf us into a conflict that might well sound the death knell of civilization. ' A new frontier rises on the horizon. It is one, not of geography, but rather of technology. Youth starves for opportunity, yetnever has there been such opportunity for any generation. The world of science, of medicine, of entertainment, of transportation, com- munication, literature, art and human relations offers fertile fields for worthy endeavors. Youth cries for security, yet many would exchange the golden rights that have formulated the very foundations of this nation's progress and strength, for the falsely gilded stanchions that have been labeled security. The greatest security comes from individual initiative. Security with- out liberty is slavery. Words of Young from Night Thoughts may well be the answer to Youth: Youth is not rich in time, it may be poor, Part with it as with money, sparingly, pay No moment but in purchase of its worth, And what it's worth, ask death-beds, they can tell. --James E. As the 1951 graduates are handed their diplomas, they will embark on the road of life ahead, wherever it may take them. And proceeding side by side' with youth along thatroad willbe progress. With that eagerness to advance which only youth can provide and with the wisdom which youth can obtain only from older generations, that ro ad will lengthen. Each problem faced, whether or not the answer will prove to be the true one, will be a stepping-stone. Today, as youth leaves through grad- uation, the world of high school and its joys, it will be met by the seriousness of living in an age of atomic power. And on the shoulders of youth will be placed the conse- quence of that power. This bookis dedicated to youth with the hope that the goal which they seek will be inspired bya higher Power than that which a scientist could provide. As youth moves, so shall the progress of the world. The youth of a nation are the trustees of posterity, Disraeli 5 Members of this year's School Board seated left to right are: Miss Mildred Mi lkie , Secretaryg Charles Thomas, Vice Presidentg Harold Jacobson, McDonald Egdorf, Superintendent of Schoolsg Joseph Marr, Wil- liam Home i s ter, Harold Stoner, Ralph Wagner, and Thomas Allman, President. The Senior Class would like to express their thanks to the School Board for all they have contributed in mak- ing our school a fine place of learning. 6 Supt. Mc Donald F. Egdorf and his Fellow administrators in Roosevelt High School are sympathetic listeners when Youth Speaks. Their desires are that the Youth of Today will be a Good Citizen of Tomorrow. MCDONALD F. Bingham, Mrs. Modesta Gamble, Charles Fines, Miss Katharine Woodward, Wesley Doney. SEHIUH SPUHSUHS InSeptember of 1941 our high school careers began. We en- tered R. H. S. as a group of 522 bewildered freshmen. Our freshman and sophomore years were uneventful as far as class activities were concerned, but that came to an end when we entered our Junior year as upper classrnen. Our first activity was choosing our class rin s, followed by our firstdance, T e Pumpkin Prance. Everyone who had parts in or worked on our Junior Play will never forget the fun we had pro- ducing A Young Man's Fancy, We climaxed our Junior year with the annual J-Hop, which we en- titled The Roaring Twenties. On that wonderful day, when we made the auditorium our Home Room, we knew we were really Seniors. With the fine leadership of our class officers and our won- derful sponsors we accomplished many things. We had great fun p r o du c i ng George Washington Slept Here , a terrific play in three acts, as our Senior Play, and we will never forget the work and fun involved in sponsoring the Mardigras as our Senior Prom. There were other things on our minds too. After a lon bat- tle, maroon and light blue finally won out as our class colors. Even in our Freshman Sz Soph- omore grades we were building up to that one great and all important moment in our lives when we would walk across the stage and receive our diplomas. Now that the time has arrived, we are a little scared but happy and we will always re- member the halls of wonderful R.H.S. and hope that it remem- bers uS. GARY WILLIAM AMES Footballg Basketball. A .tix I The World As ACornmunity Class first came into being in 1946 with Wyandotte the pioneer in this idea of high school exchange groups. Each year an ex- change ofvisits with a similar group in another part of the nation is a climax of the year's study. One year an exchange was made with Montreal, thus giv- ing an international flavor. This year the class in Wyandotte exchanged with one at Frederick, Mary- land and to raise necessary funds had paper drives, dances, bake sales and the annual County Fair. Class study was of the geography, geology and his- tory of Maryland. Rooseve1t's Band is almost a civic institution, so frequently is it called upon to play for parades and other community functions, This is the 26th anniversary of the founding of the organization, which had its birth in 1925. Leon- ard Klasse, organizer, soon turned over his duties to C. B. Andrews, pre sent mechanical drawing teacher. In 1929, Kenneth Hauer started the baton. waving and he has been head of the group since. This year's annual concert took the form of a variety show, with other organizations aiding. For the past two summers, the band has spent a week at the National Music Camp at Interlocken. 75 FROM LOWER LEFT, CLOCKWISE: Ahce Slebert, Ga11Menefee, Glona Brewer, Tom H1gby, Betty PRICE, Comme Hubbartt, Joanne Hodge. Since the opening of Radio Station WJJW, the Pub- lic School hour on Wednesday afternoons has served a two-fold purpose. Ithas given many children from the kindergarten through high school an opportunity to ap- pear in one or more broadcasts. Secondly, these pro- grams have been highly informative, telling parents and others of the listening public what is being done in the schools. Every attempt has been made by the radio co-ordin- ator to balance the programs, providing entertainment and information. ,Performing groups varied in number from half a dozen to nearly one hundred and included all ages. Programs with a strictly musical flavor were pro- vided by the A Cappella Choir, band, orchestra, girls ensemble, boys octet and the triple trio, drama was supplied by the Thespians and dramatics classes, for- ums by the discussion class, athletics by members of the various teams and their coaches. ' One of the most interesting series was that of the history-through-literature class acting as a Junior jury and discussing boy-girl, parent-child, teacher- teen-ager and employer-employee relationship. Agreat majority of the programs were recorded so that classes might make a study of the program, and also, so that various organizations might hear them reproduced. These programs have been an education in them- selves for students throughout the public schools. 78 UUUTH HIRS ITS VIEUIS Pre? l AHCWS' arlrlg me goo These Famished People T131 like , THE FHUULTU HEHHS UUUTH SPEHHIP THE CLHSSHUUWS V I ,- QL, f2'ez ',.v.,..' f '1 'ii '.,, . iff-'f: , sine gf? Starting with a very inexperienced team, the Roosevelt Gridders were expectedto do little more than worry their opponents but with the superb coaching of Coach John Middlesworth they steadily improved as the season progressed. ' On September 15 they journeyed to Lansing Sexton to meet the also inexperienced team. The meeting was profitable for the Bears as they returned with an 18-10 victory under their belts. The following Friday they were almost upset by a surprising Ecorse team and had to ight hard to win 6-0. Highland Park was the first visitor to the RHS football field and after a rough and tumble go the Parkers left for home on the long end of a Z0-14 score, Royal Oak was next on the schedule for the Dottes. The Oaksters fought the Bears to a 7-7 tie. t A trip to Grosse Pointe proved to be an unprofitable one as Wyandotte returned home, nursin a Z5-7 beating by the Blue Devils. AlCatarino, Dotte guarterback, provided the margin of Victory ,over Monroe as he ran a punt back for a 75 yard T. D. The final score read 14-6 Wyandotte. Wyandotte edged past neighbor Lincoln Park 12-6 in a very thrilling game. Fordson, the present Border Cities Champ came to Wyandotte the next week and 'was dropped 14-13 by the third place Bears. Wyandotte's wall smashing hitters of the past several seasons have gone up the ladder in the baseball world and made good in college or professional baseball and this year's team hopes to follow the same path. It was not until the first of April that the candidates could be called out-of-doors for drill because of the cold weather and only about three weeks of practice could be had before the first game. - 1 Last year 's lettermen who responded to the call of Coach Thomas were Dale Ferris and Bernie Miller, consistent mound winners and long distance hittersg FrankNauyokas, short- stopg Bob Wallace, outfielder, and Metch Za- jchowski, catcher. Others on the team who carried much of the load for the Bears were Glenn Girardin and Lenny Trusewicz, pitchers: Dick Papp, Alex imlay and Dick Wellman, infielders. 86 Roosevelt High School does not believe it completely fulfills its function without taking an active part in community affairs. Gne organization whichis calledupon many, many times for community, as well as school activities, is the Roosevelt Marching band shown above. During the football season the band gathers early in the morning for rehearsals of formations to be used between halves of the games and some clever stunts have been demonstrated., Under the direc- tion of Kenneth Hauer, the band is always generous in playing for all functions which would be permitted of a school unit. One of the highlights of the band year is a week spent at the an- nual National Music Camp at Interlochen, Michigan. Even before school was out, the band members, greatly assisted by a parents' committee started raising funds for the trip. Because of their rehearsals and individual lessons at the camp, attendance is lookedupon almost as a must , And too there is lots of recreation. Before school starts in the fall, the band has always made one scheduled appearance - that at the State Fair. 87 RUUJIHG K?g1:.L.1,lggirg-1211111532324 -ia:-ga.. 4....h..
