For four years, graduating Seniors of 1950 have been preparing for a journey on the highways of life, hoping to reach, as their des- tination, the terminal marked Success, Their preparations have been made in school, in church, and at home. For some, the journey will be speedy, for the highway will be illuminated with a golden star at the end of the trail. Resentful of any interferences that may cause delay, takers of this road will often ride, rough-shod, over the slower travelers, as they often did their fellow students in efforts to gain their desires. They have planned their course with determination, will have no time to see what lies beside the road, and will win materialistic success. Too late they will discover that the star they sought can quickly tarnish, and the highway they chose be a lonely one. Others will start out without any thought of destination, other than an exit from high school, and with an anxiety to be on their way. Such students are unprepared and unplanning. They accept each day for what it will bring. Frequently they will lose their way, and flounder in the swamps of despair and quicksands of tragedy, for always they are dependent upon efforts of others. Little sun- shine will ever brighten their way. A third group will travel over an interesting trail ofmany de- tours and little side trips. There will be fairylands to explore that will bring joy and contentment. Also, there will be rough pastures of disappointment, but these will make the fairylands more enjoy- able. Such travelers will have time to lend a helping hand to the less fortunate. They will have pleasant companionship along the way. Their star of success will not be of tarnished gold, but rather, of a life well lived, with time out for the spreading of cheer and happiness. They also have planned well, but their goal is happiness. And so, as graduation time nears, three highways stretch be- fore you. One is paved with a firm foundation of determined pre- paration. Success can be achieved, but it may well be merely materialistic success with little happiness. Another road leads to tragedy and failure. Warning signposts will be unnoticed for they will be hidden by the jungle of unpreparedness. A third, with its detours, winds through happy fairylands and grim meadows of life. This highway leads to happiness and joy of having lived for others as well as self. Your Wy-Hi-Ways will soon be your Highways of Life. You must choose a trail! Which will it be? --James E.
