Um plw BOARD OF EDUCATION During a period when peoples everywhere are look- ing with critical eyes at educational systems and edu- cation itself has been issued a challenge to preserve peace and even life itself, Wyandotte is indeed fortu- nate in having a Board of Education of top qttality. Seated arottnd the table above are members of this civic body. Reading from left to right are Thomas Allman, jr., Harold K. Jacobson, Ralph Wagner, Supt. F. W. Frostic, Harold E. Stoner, presidentg Miss Mil- dred Mielkie, secretary, Mrs. Lela Locker, William J. Homeister and Charles Thomas. These Board members are outstanding citizens of the city, highly successful in their own rights, proud ol' the WVyandotte schools and determined to keep them leaders in worthwhile educational achievements. These seven serve without remuneration other than that personal satisfaction which comes frotn a job well done. Much of their titne and efforts this year have been in the building of a new school in the northwest part of the city to serve children of that area edttcationally, and adults with a tueeting place for civic undertak- ings. This new-elementary school, the Thomas jeffer- son, is already under construction and is so designed as to easily be expanded to care for 1500 children. Under the expert guidance of Supt. F. W. Frostic, the new million dollar educational ttnit will be as modern as today and will have features found in no other school. To care for the educational needs of the city, the Wyandotte Board approved a budget of 3991929.67 for the cttrrent year. Per capita costs for the year l947-48 were 35233.61 for kindergarten to 8th grade level and 55292.01 for high school. Deaths of two men long connected with the Wyan- dotte schools caused widespread sorrow. Nelson Hed- rick, attendance officer and great friend of the un- fortunate, died Nov. 14. William Werling, former en- gineer, wlto knew almost every brick of Roosevelt High, was stricken sttddenly and died December 3. Fulfilling a need of which they have been cognizant for several years, the Board authorized a survey for a new junior high school to replace Lincoln. That may be the next unit in the school building construction program. Its completion will be a great aid to the athletic progratn at Roosevelt through furnishing material for high school teams. And now, for their great service to the community and for their interest in us as students and graduates, we members of the Senior Class say, with deep sin- cerity, Many Thanksl

A.s attendance officer for the school district of the City of Wyandotte, Mr. Hedrick constantly came in contact with the sordid sides of life, yet never lost his faith or belief in the inherent good that is in youth. In furtherance of tlzis belief he gave of his time in the promotion and leadership of activities that would aid young people to find themselves. The Boy Scouts, Goodfellows, and church activities received his active participation in the work of helping youth. And he gave of himself: as he prepared to meet with one of his groups of young people the curtain was drawn on his part in the drama of life. In those whose lives he touched his faith lives still. -By Arthur L. Benjamin 4
