For this single appearance we have heen serving as untlerstudics for four long years. On the morrow we face another playwright who is ever critical of the characters he chooses. Some of tts will he called upon for a tragic role with its prelude of carelessness or even stupidity. Some will accept the lighter roles and will go through life singing in chorus, never extending ourselves to take on the more dramatic parts. How well we interpret the character we are playing has many tlClCI'llllIl2llllS. Ostrum 3 3' I 911 971.2171011121112 Nelson Hedrick To the memory of Nelson Hedrick, who played his part well on lifels stage, the Senior Class of 14049 dedicates this issue of the annual. A.s attendance officer for the school district of the City of Wyandotte, Mr. Hedrick constantly came in contact with the sordid sides of life, yet never lost his faith or belief in the inherent good that is in youth. In furtherance of tlzis belief he gave of his time in the promotion and leadership of activities that would aid young people to find themselves. The Boy Scouts, Goodfellows, and church activities received his active participation in the work of helping youth. And he gave of himself: as he prepared to meet with one of his groups of young people the curtain was drawn on his part in the drama of life. In those whose lives he touched his faith lives still. -By Arthur L. Benjamin 4 Um plw BOARD OF EDUCATION During a period when peoples everywhere are look- ing with critical eyes at educational systems and edu- cation itself has been issued a challenge to preserve peace and even life itself, Wyandotte is indeed fortu- nate in having a Board of Education of top qttality. Seated arottnd the table above are members of this civic body. Reading from left to right are Thomas Allman, jr., Harold K. Jacobson, Ralph Wagner, Supt. F. W. Frostic, Harold E. Stoner, presidentg Miss Mil- dred Mielkie, secretary, Mrs. Lela Locker, William J. Homeister and Charles Thomas. These Board members are outstanding citizens of the city, highly successful in their own rights, proud ol' the WVyandotte schools and determined to keep them leaders in worthwhile educational achievements. These seven serve without remuneration other than that personal satisfaction which comes frotn a job well done. Much of their titne and efforts this year have been in the building of a new school in the northwest part of the city to serve children of that area edttcationally, and adults with a tueeting place for civic undertak- ings. This new-elementary school, the Thomas jeffer- son, is already under construction and is so designed as to easily be expanded to care for 1500 children. Under the expert guidance of Supt. F. W. Frostic, the new million dollar educational ttnit will be as modern as today and will have features found in no other school. To care for the educational needs of the city, the Wyandotte Board approved a budget of 3991929.67 for the cttrrent year. Per capita costs for the year l947-48 were 35233.61 for kindergarten to 8th grade level and 55292.01 for high school. Deaths of two men long connected with the Wyan- dotte schools caused widespread sorrow. Nelson Hed- rick, attendance officer and great friend of the un- fortunate, died Nov. 14. William Werling, former en- gineer, wlto knew almost every brick of Roosevelt High, was stricken sttddenly and died December 3. Fulfilling a need of which they have been cognizant for several years, the Board authorized a survey for a new junior high school to replace Lincoln. That may be the next unit in the school building construction program. Its completion will be a great aid to the athletic progratn at Roosevelt through furnishing material for high school teams. And now, for their great service to the community and for their interest in us as students and graduates, we members of the Senior Class say, with deep sin- cerity, Many Thanksl Umm' iffy I . We entered R. H. S. as 115 bewildered freshmen. Our freshmen and sophomore years were uneventful as far as class activities were concerned, but that came to an end when we entered our junior year as upper classmen. Our first activity was choosing our class-rings, followed by our first dance which we called Injun Chase. Everyone who had parts in or worked on our junior Play will never forget the fun we had producing Dear Ruth . We climaxed our Junior year with the annual J-Hop which we titled jungle Fantasy . On that wonderful day when we made that balcony our homeroom, we knew we were really Seniors. Under the fine leadership of our class officers, and our class sponsors, Mrs. Hard- wicke and Miss NVoodward, we accomplished many things. XVe had a lot of fun producing You Can't Take It With You as our Senior play, and we'll never forget the work and fun involved in sponsoring Showb0at as the Senior Prom. There were other things on our minds too. After a long battle royal blue and while finally won out as class colors, while while roses were the choice of the class for flowers. lVe decided upon the traditional gray caps and gowns for graduation. We journeyed to Susterka Park for Skip Day, and we'll never forget the fun we had skating, dancing, and hay riding on that really gay day. And so with our high school life completed, we received our diplomas on january 27, and left with our motto, Knowledgeg the foundation of peace , in mind. The World As A Community class is organized to further a better understanding of people as a whole and is sponsored by the Red Cross. The members are selected from the 11A-12B class by a committee of teachers. The choice represents a cross-section of religions, nationalities, and home life. The class exchanges visits with a high school class of the same kind in another city, prefer- ably in another section of the country. This city is chosen by the Red Cross. The W.A.A.C. Class of 1949 went to Newton, Massachusetts, a few miles from Boston. Their week's visit this year was returned by Newton High School's YV.A.A.C. class. The Wyandotte group visited many historical places in New England. The Newlonians visited Greenfield Village, U. of M. campus. Canada, Wyandotte industry, and other interesting spots. The NVyandotte class also took a plane trip to Chicago. The class made most of their money through weekly dances, hot dog sales at football games, and sponsored a lecture and the County Fair. This club seems to have gone over with a bang because the membership has increased over four times since last year. The members spend much time learning how to ski. They have movies of skiing, inside practice, and, when they are on a real ski run, they have lessons from instructors. During the skiing season the club goes up to a real ski run for a week-end of skiing lessons and fun. This year they went to Cadillac. This dramatic organization, now under the direction of Mr. Lawrence John- son, was originated 20 years ago by Miss Sarah Robinson. Its purpose is to pro- mote all dramatic activities in the high school. To be eligible one must have ten points, earned by being in school plays, working on the play committees, stage crew, directing a play, being in radio shows and writing plays. Only about hall the members eligible are elected. This is done through tryouts, with active members of Thespians casting the final vote. Each spring the organization presents one play. This year's presentation was Kind Lady . In the fall they sponsor a booth at the County Fair, and this year they helped the Ski Club put on a variety show. 44 INTERNATIONAL FRIENDSHIP CLUB Ron' I-IIIIITICIFI Sommer. Roosevelt High School has gained national recognition because of the ex- cellence ol' its student newspaper-the l'Vy-News. Continuously since the spring ol' 1944 the Wly-News has won All American honors. This is the highest honor that a scl1ool newspaper can win and to maiu- tain this degree ol' excellence lor more than five years has taken the name of Roosevelt High into every high school in the nation where school newspapers are published. The NVy News has also won medalist ratings from Columbia University in two of the past three years. Many innovations in school newspapers have been instituted by the Wly- News, innovations which were quickly acteeptecl by other student publications. Pages ol' the newspaper have been reproduced for use in journalism textbooks and at student press conventions the X'Vy News is used as an illustration ol' what a good school publication should be. 48 ANNUAL STAFF llnu' 1-Dolores Kovach, Helen Aclams, Barhara lfoxley, Mac Ochs, Sali lihenrlick, Nancy Harri- son. jean Raven, Dee Rohinson, Marion hlllfllll, Beverly Humplircy. The name was suggested by the number of students in the organization. Q Two mornings a week, during the grid season, the band members arrived at school at the time when others of their schoolmates were taking that last wink, to practice marching and working on the colorful formations' which they ex- hibited between halves of the games. Under direction of Kenneth Hauer, the band is kept busy much of the year appearing at community as well as school functions. Ten months of the year comprise the school year, but not the band year as the organization is called upon to play at the State Fair, Shriners' Picnic, Hallowe'en, Armistice Day and on other occasions when civic groups need a band. During the football season, the band operates as a military unit with officers and all the other trimmings. No sooner are the grid uniforms put into moth balls for another year than the band starts rehearsing for the first semester concert. The high stepping majorettes must learn all over again to walk and not strut. This year the band will go to lnterlocken at the close of the summer on special invitation. Under direction of Aarne Olkkonen the orchestra presents two concerts a year and some of the smaller groups are called upon for entertainment. The orchestra had 60 members and because of the instrumentation, the director gave the selections of almost symphonic difficulty to work upon. Each year many of the members graduate and it is then the work of Mr. Olkkonen to find replacements. Under the expert guidance of the director, the orchestra is filling a great need in the school. 50 BAND Ron' I-Alfred Beecher, jack Hookey, Malcom Goodwin, Bruce.
