Let this book serve as a magic looking- glass which will enable us in future years to return whenever We may desire to the scenes and acquaintances at Roosevelt High School. Though the passage ot time may make our memories less clear, this book should aid us in creating a bright picture of these tour busy and happy years. ADMINISTRATICN PRINCIPAL R, C. l. WHITNEY, principal, has among his various duties the task of making out the schedules by which the teachers enroll the students each semester. As administrative head he is responsible tor the policies of the high school and for the type of instructional and ex- tracurricular activities at Roosevelt. DEAN OF GIRLS MISS RUIE PINNEY, dean of the girls, issues excuses, gives advice to the girls, and aids them when they are looking tor employ- ment. ASST. Money from or- track tearn. CLASS RCOM SCENES 141 LIBRARY Approximately 5,500 books are available in the Roosevelt High School li- brary. These include gen- eral and special reference Volumes and fiction books to suit the taste ot all types of student readers. MATHEMATICS TYPIN G Students who plan to enter engineering college or other Vocations that de- mand skill in mathematics usually take algebra, ge- ometry, solid geometry, and trigonometry. Com- mercial and general course students usually study commercial arithmetic or general mathematics. Students learn to be pro- ficient and accurate typists through daily lessons, drill, and speed tests, with a re- quired speed of fifty Words a minute in typing IV. COOKING IOURNALISM Students here study nutrition values and dietary requirements, and discuss the purchasing of food to the best ad- vantage. They gain fundamental skill in the art oi preparing and serving foods, climaxing their work with teas, lunch- eons, and more elaborate full-course meals served to visiting guests. The journalism class publishes the Wy-News publication, a bi-Weekly, which each student receives tree. The news, features, and puzzles are all cre- ated and edited by students. CHEMISTRY DRAFTING Through experiments in the chemis- try laboratory application is made of the knowledge which students obtain from their class discussions. Mechanical drawing is a basic train- ing for all kinds of modern industrial work. The boys here learn how to use and to make blue prints and investigate the various specialized tields of work in which this skill is applied. ART MACHINE SHOP Students in art may work with oils, pastels, water colors, sculpture, or pen and ink. The art classes make the scen- ery tor the plays and decorations tor the dances. They aid in providing ar- tistic advertising for the many extra- curricular activities of the school year. Beginning students start with sheet and scrap metal projects. Advance stu- dents make models ot machines, tools, and clamps in learning the operations of the lathes, milling machines, and other apparatus provided. SENIOR BAND The Senior Bands activities are simi- lar to those of Senior Orchestra. The Marching Band makes appearances at athletic contests and in civic parades. The officers in l937-l938 were David Rucker, president: Bill Knapp, secretary: Louis Kovach and Paul Bowersox, stage managers: and William Hardy and Stan- ley Romentowslci, librarians. Drum Ma- jor was Thomas lohnson. Cecelia Vtfro- blewski and Fay Robinson were the sponsorettes. ORCHESTRA The Senior Orchestra, composed of fifty members, presents concerts and gives an annual assembly program. losephine Degtiarick was the presldent in l937-l938. MUSIC -- CHOIR The Choir appears in many of the assernblies throughout the year and al- ways sings at graduation exercises. The members perform without an accom- panist. Community appearances are made at churches and meetings of local clubs.
