Our rziznzrczipazl ea Her Assistants Recent satellite launchings have made us realize the importance of Theodore Roosevelt's words: . . . if we stand idly by . . . if we shrink from the hard contests where men must win at hazards of their lives and at risk of all they hold dear, then the bolder and stronger peoples will pass us by and will win for them- selves the domination of the world .... He further suggested that, in the life of action, of strenuous per- formance of duty, we should rather run the risk of wearing out than rusting out. Successful completion of the program offered at Roosevelt High School demands consideration of this philosophy of the strenuous life, the welfare of our Nation demands such life. Bruce Catton, editor of American Heritage, has stated that the Rough Rider credo of the great President . . . is as sound now as it was a half century ago. . ' -Erna R. Chapman I believe in Roosevelt High School as a citadel of learning, where democracy is a permanent part of the curriculum of every subiect and where the laws of fair play and sportsmanship are taught. So our school creed begins-and I believe the man Theodore Roosevelt would have phrased this virile idea in lust this way. In his essay The American Boy Theodore Roosevelt declared: A boy must work hard and play hard. He must be clean-minded and clean-lived. lt is only on these conditions that he will grow into the kind of Amer- ican man of whom America can be really proud. Theodore RooseveIt's whole life was characterized by this statement. We can profit by the splendid example of this great man, soldier, statesman and President. -Walter E. Let's imagine that he is here today and that we are going on a tour with Teddy himself as our guide. Everyone ready? Mr. Roosevelt, the floor is yours. Before beginning the tour let me give you a few facts about my school. Roosevelt was established in T932 as a continuation of the old Business High. When it first opened, the enrollment was about l,OOO. This number rapidly doubled and the school became seriously overcrowded for several years. As a solution, another high school was built in this area and the enrollment gradually receded to nearer its original number. Courses of study naturally evolutionize over the years. When first opened, Roosevelt offered mainly business education. Soon academic subiects were added until, in 1941, we held the highest rating for academic education in the city. ln 1951 we were rated among the highest in the country in the academic field. This year has recorded several memorable events: the last mid-term graduation, repairs on the inside and outside of the building, an epidemic of Asian fiu which absented over one half the school population, and the death of our beloved former principal, Miss May P. Bradshaw. Now let's begin our tour with a message from our capable Principal and her assistants. if Mrs. Wells, Principal A MAN TO EMULATE-THEODORE ROOSEVELT: There are three qualities about our patron, Theodore Roosevelt, that make me proud to be in a school that bears his name. First, his perseverance in overcom- ing his own physical weakness, second, his complete honesty, and third, his deep patriotism and love of our country. This man, who as a boy was frail and sickly, worked diligently and constantly to overcome his physical handicaps. By the time he was ready for college, he had succeeded and soon after that was a Rough Rider. Today we do not even remember or care that Theodore Roosevelt was an ailing youth. We remember only the energy and vigor which characterized him all of his adult life. Theodore Roosevelt was a scrupulously honest man. He practiced the honesty he preached so that when it became necessary to investigate wrong-doing in the departments under his supervision he did not hesitate. He pursued until the department had been purged of even the suspicion of dishonesty. He set a standard of patriotism that we would do well to follow today. He said, Patriotism stands in national matter as love of family does in private life. I believe that a man must be a good patriot before he can be a good citizen of the world. Before we become good world citizens, let us first be loyal, stead- fast true Americans. 5 ZWZZMMM
