Let's imagine that he is here today and that we are going on a tour with Teddy himself as our guide. Everyone ready? Mr. Roosevelt, the floor is yours. Before beginning the tour let me give you a few facts about my school. Roosevelt was established in T932 as a continuation of the old Business High. When it first opened, the enrollment was about l,OOO. This number rapidly doubled and the school became seriously overcrowded for several years. As a solution, another high school was built in this area and the enrollment gradually receded to nearer its original number. Courses of study naturally evolutionize over the years. When first opened, Roosevelt offered mainly business education. Soon academic subiects were added until, in 1941, we held the highest rating for academic education in the city. ln 1951 we were rated among the highest in the country in the academic field. This year has recorded several memorable events: the last mid-term graduation, repairs on the inside and outside of the building, an epidemic of Asian fiu which absented over one half the school population, and the death of our beloved former principal, Miss May P. Bradshaw. Now let's begin our tour with a message from our capable Principal and her assistants. He further suggested that, in the life of action, of strenuous per- formance of duty, we should rather run the risk of wearing out than rusting out. Successful completion of the program offered at Roosevelt High School demands consideration of this philosophy of the strenuous life, the welfare of our Nation demands such life. Bruce Catton, editor of American Heritage, has stated that the Rough Rider credo of the great President . . . is as sound now as it was a half century ago. . ' -Erna R. Chapman I believe in Roosevelt High School as a citadel of learning, where democracy is a permanent part of the curriculum of every subiect and where the laws of fair play and sportsmanship are taught. So our school creed begins-and I believe the man Theodore Roosevelt would have phrased this virile idea in lust this way. In his essay The American Boy Theodore Roosevelt declared: A boy must work hard and play hard. He must be clean-minded and clean-lived. lt is only on these conditions that he will grow into the kind of Amer- ican man of whom America can be really proud. Theodore RooseveIt's whole life was characterized by this statement. We can profit by the splendid example of this great man, soldier, statesman and President. -Walter E. Horn Mrs. Chapman, Assistant Principal Mr. Horn, Assistant Principal 4 if Mrs. Wells, Principal A MAN TO EMULATE-THEODORE ROOSEVELT: There are three qualities about our patron, Theodore Roosevelt, that make me proud to be in a school that bears his name. First, his perseverance in overcom- ing his own physical weakness, second, his complete honesty, and third, his deep patriotism and love of our country. This man, who as a boy was frail and sickly, worked diligently and constantly to overcome his physical handicaps. By the time he was ready for college, he had succeeded and soon after that was a Rough Rider. Today we do not even remember or care that Theodore Roosevelt was an ailing youth. We remember only the energy and vigor which characterized him all of his adult life. Theodore Roosevelt was a scrupulously honest man. He practiced the honesty he preached so that when it became necessary to investigate wrong-doing in the departments under his supervision he did not hesitate. He pursued until the department had been purged of even the suspicion of dishonesty. He set a standard of patriotism that we would do well to follow today. He said, Patriotism stands in national matter as love of family does in private life. I believe that a man must be a good patriot before he can be a good citizen of the world. Before we become good world citizens, let us first be loyal, stead- fast true Americans. 5 ZWZZMMM x t T, , S 0 i ' MT' F P if acwffy X' JV H I ,,,- 1 . Vrrk k sv g h? . . y YQ . . Their desks are eternally piled high with work but they are always willing to be interrupted in order to lend an ear and a helping hand. The assistant principals, as you can see, are happily endowed to counsel students and encourage them to overcome their problems. The main work of our coun- selors, in this room at the left, is programming. Miss Stevens helps plan the schedules of lovver-semes- ter students and takes charge of standardized and special tests given at Roosevelt. Mr. Myers, in addi- tion to preparing schedules for the upper-semester students, is Chair- man of the College Bureau and handles student iob requests. 471 SJ X! 1.2 Officers President Mrs. Fanny Weissberg Vice President .Mrs. Lenora Drew Secretary Mrs. Leona Cobb Treasurer Mrs. Louise Montague The members of the Home and School Association meet several times a year for a closer under- standing between parents and teachers. They contribute to a li- brary fund for book bindings and a needy-student fund. This year they enabled the school to purchase new risers for Choir use and needed furnishings for a faculty lounge. Here you see some of them sitting in class as each parent followed his child's schedule on 'Back to School' night, when teachers explained the courses of study. Their iob is to heat, repair and clean the building, and we are ever aware of the immaculate results. Fifteen members comprise the staft. Here we meet: Mr. Dryer, Assistant Gardenerp Mr, Sullivan, Custodian, Mrs. Sinnet, Matron, Mrs. Gallahan, Matron, Mr. Balderson, Chief Engineer, Mr. Leahy, Chief Custodian, Mr. McCord, Cus- todian, Mr. Rockford, Head Gardener. 1 ff, Never a dull moment should be the motto in the Business Ottice. The active daily routine of Mrs. Josephine Dore, secretary, Mrs. Shirley Herman, clerk, and their student aides is apparent as we drop in on them here. Whether it's a sore throat or an open cut, one can always turn to Mrs. Pauline Nowlan, our School Nurse, for help. She and her assistant, Carolyn Mullen, perpetually supplement their medical aid with a smile and a friendly word. ost E-Q.- 1 I V14 -M V, -.2 , . . an H in 4 ft 'ix ml O if Sem 'or IE'-s yan.. y A uw -fir' fi S. Without classes there would be no school. Our course of study is divided into a tour-track program: hon- ors, college preparatory, general and basic. Every student must take a prescribed amount ot English, social studies and physical education. Those preparing tor college or wishing to obtain a good gen- eral background find math, science and languages a must. Business education is taken by those who are thinking of non- protessional careers. Home economics helps the girls become acquainted with proper home management. Each student receives a schedule card at the beginning of the semester listing the periods and room numbers of the subiects he plans to take. Come with me now and take a look at our cIasses. viii THE 'l'HlPD PEPlCD MW' i 611 fig' f 't for one to improve in appropriate and fluent use of his The English Department provides opportunl y own language. Here we look in on a sophomore English class demonstrating that parliamentary pro- cedure and bulletin boards are helpful in the practical application of communicating effectively with each other. 36 Effective speech has become increasingly important. People are often iudged by their voices vocabulary and sentence structure. We are fortunate to have Mr. James J. Campbell, a speech therapist employed by the Board of Education, spend one day each week at Roosevelt giving special assistance as you see in this classroom. Audio-visual education gives the student a better understanding and appreciation of his textbook material. The audio-visual aids used in school are maps, globes, tape-recorders, pho- nographs and films. They really are better than this in better weather. Get your hot dogs here and Ice Cold Cokes are familiar cries heard at Roosevelt's football and basketball games. The frankfurters-hot dogs -and Coca Cola are traditional refreshments at sporting events all over the United States. When Americans become excited at these events, they become hungry. Therefore, munching on red hots and sipping cokes lend tremendous atmosphere to athletics at Roosevelt. The hot dogs are sold by the Cadets and the cokes are sold by the R Club. Nea..-1-g,1, .T3t13,f.sI'.f wi, -N Visitors to our school on a non-uniform day might witness a DAILY DRILL like that shown here if they should peer into our stadium early or late during school hours. It takes much practice in civilian attire to make a good show on parade occasions. When another year nears its close, new officers must be chosen at Roosevelt. This is done by having the non-commissioned officers attend an Officer Candidate School fO.C.S.J held for a period of four weeks and directed by the existing officers. After a rugged period of training, the officers for the next year are chosen by averaging O.C.S. test grades, academic records for the preceding semesters and a composite grade in military science. In this way a promotion list is established from which selections are made. Captain Giasson, our military instructor, gives the boys such good training that the officer candidates are always bound to receive their commissions. I can't resist an expression of sincere admiration for this particular Cadet Corps-the Fifth Regiment. 71 ' ?L - Wlllldllllll iulmi iillllfllmm 1L--.,,.,. - 91-11. -Y l ll Z. lr The 0V'gc6Zl77liZdfi rw li' 2--em .4 fegiij Q e - -:gre ,D x ,J The Club Room is one place where activity is al- ways in progress, for this is the headquarters for all our organizations.
