Cadets MILITARY COMMITTEE Mr. D. B. Lloyd, Chairman, Miss H. M. White, Mr. F. Barnard, Captain F. Jackson, Mr. R. M. Warren. Battalions, Attention! With this familiar cry reverberating through the Roose- velt Armory, the Fifth Regiment marched off to win three second places. Ten years ago Rocsevelt's Cadet Corps was nothing but a battalion. Now it has grown into Washington's largest regiment, comprised of nearly one-fourth of the student body of Roosevelt. It required a great deal of hard work and perseverance to build that battalion into a regiment worthy of following the footsteps of the great T.R.'s Rough Riders . To the martial strains of the Wfasbington Port March, our band, so vital to all of the competitions, again placed among the best in the city. The Fifth Regiment Band is the largest and best equipped in the brigade. To a great extent this is due to the untiring efforts of Mr. Jackson, the Band instructor, and to the cooperation of the Home and School Association. Although second place was not what the band expected-well, there is always next year. At the beginning of this Cadet year, Mr. Lloyd took over the position of Chairman of the Military Committee. Mr. Barnard became our Military Instructor, replacing Lt. Brown, due to the latter's serious illness. Miss White continued her work as supervisor of Cadet social events, and as manager of the Post Exchange. We wish this new committee the best of luck in its future work. Of the greatest pleasures that l know Surely this is one- To sit wondering, vainly guessing, musing o'er a play While impatient rustlings sleep, and the lights tiptoe away. As the curtain lifts and the story unfolds, no longer am I me For my soul's a magic carpet, and my dreams are far and free: Exotic lands they traverse, by glorious songs and noble deeds inspired Until at last, when the tale is told, my thoughts return refreshed, alive-not tired , Oh, the glamour, the enchantment, the sheer intoxicating power! For I have lived a thousand lives in one elusive, blissful hour. Dramatics SCENES FROM THE SPRING PLAY- A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM SCENES FROM THE OPERETTA- MARTHA OSCARS We admire your courage. You have stood up wonderfully under a diet of opera and classical plays thrown your way by the Roosevelt opera stars in the last year. Is there a single person who cannot remember even a little bit of Martha , Von Flotowis comic opera, presented early last December? Although she was really a great lady, Martha, in the throes of a fanciful whim, spent a whole year as a servant. And, as all good stories go, Martha and her lady-in- waiting, who also became a hireling, fell in love with their respective masters, who were the best of friends. Martha , the title role, was played by Portia Kahler. Virginia Duncan and Berma Overby gave fine performances as Nancy, the lady-in-waiting. Rumsey Beery gave a splendid portrayal of Lionel, the hero, and Jack Lansdale did just as fine a job of Plunkett. And of course we couldnit forget Wilton Mendelson, who was perfect as Sir John. Elsie Melton, Bettie Saunders, Judy Leichhardt, Louis Marengo and John Yeatman deserve credit for their work in the minor roles, and please donit forget the choruses they worked pretty hard, too. With the good will of Christmas time in mind a group of French students gave The Bishop's Candlesticksv from Victor Hugo's uLes Miserables. Shining forth triumphantly was the acting of Berel Firestone as Jean Valjean. Bill Des Marais, who played the part of the bishop, was quite good. You will probably see him often in the next yearis offerings. Jane Snyder and Yolanda Tiburzi, who enacted the parts of Mademoiselle Bap- tistine and Madame Magloire, respectively, deserve a lot of praise. The policemen, played by Wallace Adams, Donald Frazier and Arthur Alberding, did their duty. If we could have understood French, it would have been much more wonderful. In March, for our spring play, we continued the classical trend and gave Shake- speare's immortal comedy, A Midsummer Night's Dream . It probably was a night- mare for Miss Galbraith, what with Eugene Fry trying to get the mumps at the last minute 'ni everything, but I think everybody enjoyed it, even if they didn't catch the more subtle puns. There was such a multitude of good actors and actresses that it would be prac- tically impossible for us to remember every one of them, but we can try, can't we? Now let's see-there was Gene Mendelsohn and Claridore Oliker as Hermia, the love interest-Doris McWhirt and Enid Heatley as Helena, more love interest- Bill McGhee and Eugene Fry as Lysander. Morris Toranto, Arthur Law. Betty Pine, Pearl Pollack, Ross Porter and Harry Burch played the remaining major roles. Oberon, king of the fairies, was played by Leon Herbert and Charles Baker. Phyllis Rands and Bernice Bittner took the part of Titania, the fairy queen. Billy Mann, as Puck, and the Artisans and fairies rounded out the cast. Now, whom do you pick for an Oscar,'? ARTIE BOYD d has made himself very Coach Boy well known to Roosevelt for his ex- cellent football team and equally fine track team. BOYS' ATHLETICS For the past few years Roosevelt sports have definitely been on the upward grade. This year Roosevelt outclicl itself in showing to the world that our teams are to be seriously reckoned with from now on. Through playing a hard and clean game, each team of which we all can be justly proud. sport has had a bll Foot a Under the guidance of a new coach, Roosevelt's 1939 football team came into its own. Coach Artie Boyd predicted early in the season that we would win at least two inter-high games, and this is precisely what happened. With Danny Boothe as captain and such excellent players in the lineup as Bernie K lker and Lester Wicklein, it was not surprising that Roosevelt defied past tradition ' ' . With such a start as this in the football hall of fame, ore successful season o and won two inter-high games ' cl ain at the helm, we expect an even m nd with Coach Boy ag next year. 3 Basketball Championsl l This year the Roosevelt basketball team came through and took the inter-high championship. Not satisfied with that they also won the metropolitan area championship. With the big three, George West, Hymie Perlo, and Ernie Travis, setting the pace for the rest of the team, Roosevelt turned back the defending champions fEasternD twice to gain these honors. With this fine record in mind and the superior ability of Coach Littman to turn out champion teams, next year's quintet will fight hard and we believe successfully to retain our well-earned title. Baseball With the majority of last year's star players back again, the prospects for an inter-high victory look very pleasing, to say the least. For how could a team with a coach like Coach Littman, and such excellent players as Travis, Perlo, Wichlein, and Vermillion fail to cause the other schools a great deal of worry? Although so far this season inclement weather has halted our progress, once the team gets in it's stride, there'll be no stopping them. Track Although graduation cost the track team many of last yearis stars, so many equally competent newcomers are on the 1940 team that a lot can be expected from it. Tim,' Council heads the team this year as captain and with the reliable aid of such boys as Brier, Lancaster, Cornfield, and Norton, we have the right to look for the best results. Golf Roosevelt has had a monopoly on the interhigh championship for the past three years and the team has no idea of losing that monopoly this year. Leading the Rider's attack this year is captain Lloyd Johnston. Other members of the team are Arthur Meyers, Bill Brownrigg, Joe Barse, Charles Griffin, Preston Wannan, and Irwin Breier. We are all waiting eagerly for good results again this year. Boys' Swimming Team Members of the Roosevelt Boys' Swimming Club, under the direction of Mr. Sharitz, have been regular visitors at the Shoreham swimming pool during this past year. There they have received instruction in junior and Senior Red Cross Water Safety. Boys who are in this club not only gain valuable training but also receive passes to all swimming events at the Shoreham pool. Leon Herbert not only captained the team, but reigned as President this past year. Tennis With David Kay setting the pace, the tennis team is all set for a big season. Other reasons why we have the right to hope for an interhigh victory are in the form of the other members of the team. They are Charles Gottlieb, Richard Bruce, Ben Fisher, Arthur C. Farrington, Jr., and Allen Weiss. Mrs. Martinez, who has been the piloting force behind the team during Past years, believes she has a good team this year but will not say anything concerning the outcome of this yearis matches. R. P. MARTINEZ LUCILE KIRSCH Women's 100 yard Breostroke Champion for the District of Columbia GIRLS' ATHLETICS Along with the upward swing of popularity of boys' sports, the girls of Roosevelt High have taken a greater interest in the more strenuous side of school this year. After many years of persuasive argument, the Physical Education Department finally established a system whereby the seventh and eighth semester girls are allowed to participate in various outside activities instead of having regular Gym classes during school hours. Among those activities listed, almost every girl found her favorite, but for those few who didn't want to take advantage of these sports, a special hygiene class was started. Some of the activities on the list were golf, swim- ming, ping-pong, tennis, basket-ball, baseball, badminton, ice-skating, and roller- skating. Although every group seemed to have a full quota, it was noticed that a few were more popular than the others. Ice-skating ranks very high and the girls are fast becoming second Sonja Heiniesv. Archery classes are also quite full, but there are two girls who are destined to ago places -Clayborne Steele and Pattie Moore- both of whom rank high on the city lists. In the ping-pongv group, we find a real star in the person of Jane Stauffer. lane is the Women's Table Tennis Champion for the District of Columbia, and we are proud to have her a member of the class of june, 1940. Base-ball and basket-ball have long been favorites with the girls and Miss Moody and Miss Saunders say that now even more girls attend the afternoon sessions. Although not especially outstanding as a player, Jane Boal shines as a base-ball reporter for the school paper. Swimming also is one of the most popular activities, as there is a long procession of girls going to the Shoreham Hotel Pool every Wednesday after school hours. A member of the swimming group is Lucile Kirsch, who is the Women's 100 yd. Breaststroke Champion for the District of Columbia. Of course these are only a few of the outstanding people in a few of the out- standing groups, for if we tried to mention all the notables in the class of 1940, we could fill ten pages of names and noteworthy achievements. We are all grateful to Miss Moody, Miss Saunders, and the other teachers, who have worked with us so many long hours after school.
