This year’s Spring Musical “Guys and Dolls” was a much loved at- traction at the stage of Roosevelt High School. The story concerns a horde of typical Broadway characters. Half of them are gamblers, and the action concerns them, their girls, and their troubles. The chief trouble is deciding between the rolling of the dice and the beating of the heart. The other half of the characters include the Salvation Army Mission who are set on converting the corrupted gamblers. Thanks to Mrs. Forsman and her productions crew, the spring musical went over well with dynamic sets and creative costumes. Sara Petersen This year’s sportsboosters gave out great effort and spirit as they brought us another tremendous year. Their year was spent making locker and football breakthrough signs, a lot of hard work, but they had fun. With the spirit the class of '85 has, next year’s sportsboosters should be just as good. Emerson HOMECOMING 83-84 This year's Homecoming Week was definitely one to remember! The activities got underway on Monday with Beach Day sponsored by the Seniors. Tuesday brought Generic Day to Roosevelt halls compliments of the Juniors. Sophomores con- tributed to Tradition Week by initiating Jock Day. Not to be out done, the Freshmen produced Inside-Out Day on Thursday. Friday’s Spirit Day brought out everyone’s Rider Pride and was a traditional and spirited end to the week. Other Homecoming activities included the Ruff sponsored Tug-of-War and the Pumpkin Carving Contest. The game Friday night paired our Roughriders against the Garfield Bulldogs and the week came to a close with the Homecoming Dance afterwards. From Jock to Generic, spirit seems to run in the Shorack family. Teddy takes first place! “Ultra Brite” really got Shelley noticed! 98 OUR TRADITION LIVES ON Hurry up, I have to go to the bathroom! Eat your heart out Annette Funicello. 99 SUPER SENIORS The enthusiasm of the seniors this year showed as the committees successfully planned out the memorable events of their final year at Roosevelt. The Luncheon Committee started out first by making all the arrangements for the luncheon. This was also the place where the seniors received awards given to them by their peers. As this passed along, the Cruise Committee sailed their way into choosing the perfect night to boogie down upon the waves. Then what could be next but the prom? This big event was held at the Seattle Trade Center and the theme was “Stepping Out.” And last but not least was the moment that everyone will always remember. Commencement, the day when seniors were handed their diplomas and entered the doors to their future. Luncheon Committee: Back Row: Chris Welander. Representing Roosevelt The Associated Students of Roosevelt had a very busy and successful year. They began the year with the annual canned food drive and a school clean-up day before the open house. They also elected Mr. Jacobsen and Mr. Anderson as the ombudsmen to help with student-staff problems. A.S.R. communicated with the student body through roll reps and they renovated the Activity Center in the spring with the never-ending help and support of Mr. Champion. Jessica Hirschfelder Interhigh Student Representative Alison Hinojosa Committee Coordinator Colin Johnson Vice-President Mr. Champion A.S.R. Advisor Activity Coordinator. Andy Dale President Torch Enlightens Students Andy Dale Secretary Maud Steyaert Treasurer Alexis Masnik President Jennifer Woodrum Vice-President The Torch Honor Society is the largest organization in Roosevelt, consisting of students who have earned a 3.2 or higher GPA. The most important service provided was one-on-one tutoring for students needing help in specific subjects. Members also had access to free Mariner tickets through the society. In addition, students had the oppor- tunity to participate in the Intervention program. The Honor Society also held the second annual assembly to honor students who made a significant contribution to Roosevelt in ways that are important but are not usually given public recognition. These activities, as well as the Torch officers light the way. Mr. Miller Advisor Torch banquet, were very successful. 103 SPIRITED Roosevelt’s senior service organizations, the Roughriders and Spurs, had an exciting year filled with many activities. One of their most important projects was going to Centerpark, an adult care facility for the handicapped and the elderly, where they provided entertainment and refreshments on a regular basis. This year the Spurs sponsored the education of an Amerasian girl in Thailand named Sineerat, and raised money through bake sales and car washes. They also served as hostesses at Open House and ushered at the musical production and graduation exercises. The Ruffs sponsored the Homecoming Tug-of-War and rang bells at Christmas time for the Salvation Army with the Spurs. Both groups had a highly productive year, due in part to their insightful advisors Mr. Anderson and Mrs. Hurd. The Spruffs provide a unique service to our school and our com- munity and deserve our hearty appreciation and thanks. Keep up the good work! President Dana Outcalt Vice President Sara A. Among these were a chocolate sale, the production of the state JCL publication the Vox Latina, a Latin promotion program presented to Seattle Junior High Schools, an authentic Roman banquet accompanied by a mock Roman wedding, and a campaign to raise money for the National JCL Convention to be held in Richmond, Virginia this summer. Three of the members in this group should be recognized this year. Maud Steyaert. national JCL vice-president, Jane San tana, 1983-84 state JCL secretary, and Brian Menard, state treasurer. The purpose was to find certain checkpoints in the forest with only a map, clues, compass, and their legs. They had six competitions against other high schools, as well as practice meets. They ran from checkpoint to checkpoint in parks around the greater Seattle area. Hopefully Mr. Ross will guide this group to success next year too. The Ethnic Student Union once again presented the Martin Luther King Jr. assembly. They also held a talent show in the spring and a banquet where they gave special recognition to minority students. They held many fund raisers in order to give these scholarships. Ms. Carr, their advisor, helped the club to get more minority students involved in the activities. Our task is to continually strive for excellence in all facets of our lives at Roosevelt High School. May our heritage continue to inspire our students and faculty. Mathematics is not a spectator sport INSTRUCTION The ’83-’84 school year was one of adjustment for both the faculty and students at Roosevelt. The addition of new teachers to Roosevelt's staff brought beneficial ideas and teaching methods to our scholastic environment. The new school policies also affected the faculty. These included a revised final schedule, a stricter attendance policy, and Saturday school. Most teachers greeted these changes with a positive attitude and used their best efforts to make them successful. Fortunately for Roosevelt, the instruction staff adjusted admirably to these changes, thus continuing a tradition of academic excellence. The year was definitely a successful one. I’ll take it out and thaw it out. This lovely dream I’ve frozen. And boil it up and sit me down And dip my old cold toes in. — Shel Silverstein This poem captures the whole essence of an annual, or should I say Annual Staff's attitude of what a yearbook is all about. We do our best to capture all that has happened during the year. Apologies to anyone who feels we have missed a vital part of high school life, but in such a large and diverse school there are many more things happening than can comfortably fit into one 200 page annual. We hope that you enjoy what we have collected here. May these pictures and their commentary bring back many memories when you are an old grey geezer flipping through the pages of this 1983-1984 Strenuous Life. Thanks to all the special people who donated their energy and talent to the production of this annual. In particular I would like to thank Mr. Elarth, our advisor; Milt Bean, of the American Yearbook Company; Rowland's Studio, the staff, and photographers. Again, we hope you enjoy the 61st edition of “Strenuous Life, ” and all the memories it carries with it. ‘'' A special wish of good luck to the class of 1984!
