Much of the skill and commitment came from this year ' s seniors, who include, Kendell Wilske, Sue Tjarnberg, Allison Lytle, Andi Johnson, Ansa Ahmed, and Brian Jacobsen. When asked their chances of continuing their success next season. Coach Mike Dowd sounded confident stat- ing that few seniors were leaving the team, and therefore it should be very strong. By selling advertising, the team managed to raise enough money to play on Roosevelt ' s home field for the first time for many years. Coached by Jay Boitano and led by seniors Nick Engrissei, Nick Terzopoulas, Adam Dworkin, and Steve Loft, the team managed a 5-7 record when Strenuous Life went to press. With many talented underclassmen, the baseballers should win many games in ' 84. 1 96b Softballers Slide Through Season Manda Dunlop shows her smooth release Roosevelt ' s Softball team put forth a solid effort throughout the ' 83 season, compiling a 5-5 record when Strenuous Life went to press. Skipper Bud Thrapp coached a relatively young team that consisted of only three seniors: Manda Dunlop, Peggy Wyne, and Maureen Costello. Next year, with the aid of three returning Cos- tello sisters, along with many other fine juniors, the team should prove tough. Team members Steve Moore, Tim Gordon and Mary Brantley led the show on the ground with several impressive runs. Lori Hess, Damon Dickens and Jeff Taylor put on an aerial attack in the long jump, triple jump and pole vault, respectively, leaving many opponents in dismay. The new 1922 Charelston Marathon champions. Homecoming week got off on the right foot with each class dressing in their own style. Freshmen dreamt of sunny summer vacations with their Hawaiian Day, Sophomores went for a big change on Transvestite Day. Juniors showed their respect for Grandma and Grandpa on Old Peoples Day, while Seniors showed off their muscles on Sports Day. Tuesday came and people tried to bring back the days of the Roughriders by dressing in Western attire and then showing themselves off with a Teddy Roosevelt lookalike contest. Wednesday got going with a bang back to the ages of Bonnie and Clyde on Twenties to Forties Day. Thursday brought us closer to this day and age traveling into the Fifties and Sixties. The week ended with a lot of pep on Spirit Day. Tradition week came to an end with a great football game against Ingraham and the traditional Homecoming Dance. They made all activities special for everyone. They started the year off by doing a great job on all dan- ces, especially the traditional homecoming dance. Later in the year, the Senior Luncheon was held and it was an unforgettable occasion because the seniors ' best, worst, and most well-known traits, according to their peers, were revealed. As the year progressed, there was more opportunity for the cruise committee to pick the perfect evening to dance the night away under the stars. Then came the last and most memorable dance of their several years at Roosevelt as the Prom Committee planned for all seniors to have a great time. However, the most memorable experience they could have had this year is the final minutes when eac senior was handed their diploma, and then went ahead to face their future. It started off with an outstanding homecoming week. They sparked student involvement with roll representatives. This helped with the selection of classes in the spring and teacher evaluations. They led Rider pride super high with smooth class elections. They let spirit loose with the two cleanup days making us shine out! A major project that they pursued was going to Centerpark, an adult care facility for the handicapped and the elderly, once every month where they provided entertainment and refreshments. The Spurs sponsored the education of an Amerasian girl in Thailand named Sineerat. One of the ways that they raised money for this was by selling Turkey Grams. The Spurs also went trick or treating for Unicef and took part in the March of Dimes drive. The Ruffs provided teacher Santa Claus pictures at the Hollyben-y festival. They also rang bells at Christmas time for the Salvation Army and sponsored a Ruff raffle. In addition, the Spurs ordered sweatshirts and the Ruffs t-shirts so they have been easily identifiable throughout this year. These are only a few of the various Spruff undertakings this year. They, along with their helpful advisors, Mr. Anderson and Mrs. Hurd, deserve a hearty congratulations and a pat on the back for a job well done. They had weekly meetings where the students talked about the 28 different countries they were from. The purpose of the club was to bring the in- ternational students together and to make the school aware of them. The officers were: Kim Faulkner, president (who spent her second semester in Australia); Liza Wilcox, vice president; Juliette Demargne, treasurer; and Mei-Li Hung, secretary. They ended the year in good spirits after donating a lot of time and effort to help with Fircrest ' s Annual Easter Egg Hunt. This year, the Martial Arts Club worked really hard to improve their skills at this specialized sport. Roosevelt ' s tradition of excellence, spirit, and compassion started in its first year, 1922. In 1923, The Strenuous Life spoke to our spirit: The body of (Theodore) Roosevelt is buried but the Roosevelt Spirit still lives. That can never die, but will remain forever enthroned ... And the 1924 annual devoted many, many pages to ex- tracurricular activities — plays, sports, clubs, music, debate, service groups — and yes, even then the Rooseuelt News was awarded High Honors. We ' ve held on to the tradition of offering a well-rounded education and of excellence. The maintenance of high standards, the emphasis on the academics, the arts, and the demonstration of human kindness here at Roosevelt High School are all based on an established tradition. As long as we continue to recognize and cherish this tradition, Roosevelt will continue to be known as one of the best high schools in the State. P.A. Teachers instructed many ex- citing and stimulating classes to broaden the students ' horizons. One new addition to the curriculum was the Chinese cour- se, which provided an exotic and fun challenge for students who were able to take it. Even with larger classes and fewer staff members, the teachers were still able to create an at- mosphere conducive to learning and a worthwhile educational ex- perience.
