One of the major results of Roose- veltis remodeling program was the new library, which included many modern facilities. Ticket sales were relocated on the second iloor in the stockroom. The Social Service Committee conducted various drives as well as giving a Christ- mas party for the Orthopedic Hospital. For the first time, Finance Committee allowed sports to divide its own budget instead of designating a certain amount to each area. The Stage Crew's banging while building sets contrasted greatly with the quiet of study hall on the other side of the stage curtain. Phil KirbY, Jana Slezak, Jim Davis, Sue Smidt, Bill Programs are provided to give direction to activity. i i ' Ad Council revised its program by placing more emphasis on counseling students With curriculum and discipline problems. By Working on the All-Metro League Sportsmanship Trophy, attending a safety conference at Sand Point Naval Air Station, and promoting the levy and transfer program with the Inter-Sights radio broadcast, Inter-high provided a student council between fourteen Metro League high schools. With the theme, Something Better Beginningf ASB included the areas of Student Cabinet and ASR Committees. Meeting third period during Student Government, Student Cabinet tried to fit the changed atmosphere of the construc- tion into the pattern of school life. With the Franklin exchange, the PTA ski sale and the support of transfer students, ASR Committees had an active year. Working with students and linking high schools, Ad Council, Inter-high, and ASR were an integral part of Rl-IS. Inter-high-Pat Shaw, Terry Williams, Tim Dearborn, Remy Newland, Terry Timberlake. I6 1967-68 will be remembered by Roosevelt students -and faculty as the year that the bene- fits of construction began to be utilized. The new physical environment provided by the changed building displaced many of the ties and much of the security of the old building for the upperclassmen, but opened the door to new possibilities and adaptations. Confrontations with non-functioning restrooms, stairways designated For Emergency Use Onlyf and masses of students clustered between classes around the alcove gave way to more efficient operation as early confusion cleared. Progress was marked by vending machines in the alcove, round and square tables in the new lunchroom, blue, red, and green plastic desks, rugs on the floor, and expanded facilities for the class- rooms. But the change also extended to new attitudes and programs beyond those due to construction. A revised ASR constitution, re- juvenated Boys' Club, and the formation of GIRC and the Ruifettes oifset the loss of pro- grams such as Revue and the decline in student independence through Operation Tighten Up. A magazine drive and the new method of assembly production by a special class reflected innovation. Periodic voluntary cleaning of the seal by students reflected continued ties with old traditions as the year brought its possibility of Something Better Beginningf, ASR Committee Chairmen-Back row: Jim Clifford, Jim Davis, Bob Caplan, Dave McCaEree. Sportsboosters continued to support the Roosevelt athletic teams through Pep Week, activities of committee members at games, and frequent donations of soft drinks and other refreshments to the players. In addition, they organized two all-school assemblies. The Elections Committee, initiated last year, coordi- nated every election held at Roosevelt. Comprised of silkscreen, poster, and stu- dent bulletin committees, the Communi- cations Committee was aided in its program to keep students informed by the acquisition of four new silkscreen frames. The PTA Dance Committee members, in addition to their advisory work on all dances, organized two them- selves. A new addition to Roosevelt this year was the Special Events Committee, which directed such varied programs as Traditions Week and Homecoming, as well as aiding other committees in vari- ous dances, drives, and presentations. Miss Wills, director, and student directors, Carla Van Dam and Chris Wienker, work together to improve a scene. The work of both the directors and Stage Crew was invaluable in preparing the Senior Play, presented on December lst and Znd. The directors organized the play and helped the actors to develop their roles, while the Stage Crew did the technical work on the production. The Stage Crewis work also included the creation of one backdrop, a cellar scene, for the play. The other backdrop showed a street of Paris , it was rented from a Hollywood studio because classes held backstage provided the crew little time to paint. However, it was aided in its attempt to give the stage an attractive appearance y the replacement of the old act- ing curtain and the addition of a new black background curtain given by the PTA. Miss Wills reviews the script. How beautiful he is! Men are big and beautiful, and as loyal as dogs? f u fi1 LL it a ifaff it 1 53, 5 , If it's not oil, by the time we get through, it will be? 'ir U5 ' Careful attention to detail results in a polished performance The Roosevelt Drama Department, under the direction of Miss Norma Wills, presented the Senior Play, The M adwomcm of Chaillot, in two performances on December lst and Qnd. The plot was centered around the struggle be- tween individualism and objective materialism, between good and evil. The nonconformists of Chaillot, a district of Paris, were slowly being suffocated by the impersonal businessmen of the area. Countess Aurelia, the Madwoman of Chaillot and an eccentric lover of life, lured these men through a trap door in her basement with promises of oil below, thus sending them into the sewers of the city forever and over- coming evil and greed. The talents of many Roosevelt students were revealed in this de- manding production. I swear to lie, conceal and distort everything, and slander everyone. l ,., , FQ, --Q T A L 1' A Q1 Q., 3 L. A 8. The Roosevelt News was the work of the editors and reporters, as well as the journalism classes and the Ad Staff. Each reporter covered a beat,', a specific area of the school. When he found an interesting idea for a story, he would,,rep.ort back to the editors, who would have it written up for the paper by a member of News Staff. The Ad Staff got the adver- tisements for the paper, which supplied a large part of the funds necessary for its printing. During the second semester, the position of managing editor was introduced to assist the edi- tor-in-chief in the organization of the front page. The change gave him more time to work on the paper as a whole. Besides this, another change was made. Offset printing was used for the paper instead of let- ter press. The Roosevelt Roughriders completed the 1967 football season with a record of three wins and five losses. Although suffering four straight defeats to Gariield, Ingraham, Shoreline, and Hale, the team proved that the desire to win was still strong in a 19-O victory over Shorecrest in the last game. Six returning lettermen and two sophomores, along with eighteen juniors and seniors, made up the varsity team. The Roughriders were first among the worldls high schools when they walked out onto the newly installed Astro-turf at Memorial Stadium to train for the pre-season Jamboree. According to Coach Harney, the turf was one of the greatest things to happen to Metro League Football in years. It made fast players faster and improved the over-all quality of the games by making them more colorful and al- lowing the players' numbers to be more easily seen. The turf also made possible the introduc- tion of double-header games so that more teams could play on it. It is hoped that in the future the whole Metro League schedule can be played on the Astro-turf. The Junior Varsity football squad ranked third in the Northern Division. They finished the season with a 3-2-1 win-loss-tie record. The team fought to a 6-6 tie with Shorecrest. Their only losses were to Ballard and Shoreline. All three victories, over Hale, Ingraham, and Lin- coln, were shut-outs-14-O, 7-O, and 27-O. The Sophomore team faced many problems which contributed to their O-7 win-loss record. Five of the team's most promising players were lost, two to the varsity squad, and three due to various qualifying factors. Additional losses due to injuries required players to cover posi- tions in which they had had little or no experi- ence. The inexperience of most of the larger players was an added disadvantage. Two new coaching techniques used were Marine-type exercises and the Stacked-I, which placed three backs behind the quarterback, allowing for easier shifting of the backfield. West, principal, surrounded by the library, September 1967. The 1967-1968 school year has seen greater changes in the physical plant at Roosevelt than any other in its forty-five year history. Both stu- dents and faculty have experienced countless inconveniences and frustrations trying to maintain meaningful instruction in the midst of demolition and reconstruction. However, through the cooperation, determination, and resoureefulness of students, faculty, and par- ents, this year has become one of the most educationally productive in our history. Our sparkling new facilities will make pos- sible an even stronger instructional program in the future. Their ilexibility will encourage further innovations as we experiment with more efficient instructional methods. www Y 'T' 4213? The resource center made available texts, tape recorders, and other outside ma- terials. Students were permitted to practice speaking and to play special tapes. With the larger language classes this year, films'-and film strips were also utilized by the teachers. The Music Department made gains with the addition of a new music room and two vocal groups, the Classicantors and the Trouvieres. Mr. Taylor stressed the new lookl' which in- cluded the new music and choir rooms, practice uniforms, storage rooms, and stereo equipment. Classes were resumed in October, on a limited basis, prior to the completion of the dressing rooms and showers in the second semester. However, both the Sophomore and Junior gyms received a new room for dancing and tumbling. T, I. Though the lunch- room was finished for the beginning of school, the kitchen was not, and for sev- eral weeks, the lunchroom staff served Herfy Burgersv and milkshakes. New facilities included a lunch line, snack bar, and milkshake counter, breakfast was also available. The kitchen staff had the additional duty of preparing lunch for University Heights Elementary School. Custodians, working day and night, coped with the dirt and confusion of a school under construction. They also undertook the customary supervision of lockers, a duty somewhat changed by the recent installment of lockers in all halls throughout the school. The secretarial staff was responsible for bulletins, absentee lists, attendance records, and the issuing of report cards. Although each of the eight secretaries erformed separate tasks, all aimed at keeping Roosevelt functioning properly. 99 ff .f g -QP' J! , 1 3. v X ' Jw,.,...,,,,Wm - W, , H+- 1 , ' . New faces as well as a new school urged the Sophomores to be active. Their theme, Even the Bad Times Are Goodf' set the mood for what became a year of tedious construction, never end- ing class competitions, and or- ganizations to join. The Class of '70 won the Senior Class Pencil Sale, and, combined with the Juniors, the ASR Magazine Sale. It was the year of adjustments for the whole school, but with the security of still having two more years ahead, the Sophomores con- centrated on becoming a part of Roosevelt High School. They found this difficult in a building that had changed so much during the few summer months. But with the aid of drives and other, more traditional activi- ties, the Juniors were able to ac- complish as much as previous classes. The sale of GQ buttons proved successful due to the hard work of the Junior Class Drives Committee. Juniors also worked with Seniors on the annual Jun- ior-Senior Dance. Illustrating con- cerns beyond the boundaries of Roosevelt, they sent gifts to serv- icemen in Viet Nam. As they were elected to school oflices, Juniors realized the responsibilities and promises of their Senior year, and awaited it anxiously.
