A new, flexi- ble schedule was introduced at Roose- velt this year. Students were enrolled in seven classes. These were rotated consecutively five per day, making a complete cycle every seven days. The extra hour in the day was used for E or Enrichment period. The depart- ments received priority for certain days, enabling them to call all their students together for special lectures and films. ASR was also able to use E period for assemblies, Student Council, and other meetings. In the new schedule, students were required to take live subjects and were allowed six or seven with faculty per- mission. Many students completed their program with a class from the Home Economics, Industrial Arts, Business or Art department. Borrowing an expression from Teddy Roosevelt, the Sophomore Oflicers chose Speak Sophly and Carry a Big Stick as a class theme. Determination, a lcey Word in the attitude of the class of '69, enabled them to achieve good results in such activities as the Clothing drive, United Cood Neighbors drive, and Pep Week competition. They also were especially strong in school spirit, making many weekly contributions to the teams. One of these presentations was a turkey given to the Football Squad prior to the Metro League Championship game. The Sophs sold decals to raise funds for their class and they sponsored an ASB dance in the Spring. To become a Spur or Ruff, a student was required to have a 2.5 grade average and have been active in school and community affairs. One hour of service to the school each day was required of each Spur, as an assistant in one of the oflices, a library aide, or a teacheris secretary. ln addi- tion to this, the Spurs worked in various community areas including the Handicap Center, Neighborhood House, Seattle Day Nursery, and many others. ln addition to ushering at games and serving with Spurs at school functions, the Roughriders Worked at the Handicap Center, Anti-Tuberculosis League, and were available to help handicapped and needy people throughout Seattle. The desire to excel in The Varsity Football season began with a Ted victory over the Spartans. With a stout defense and an interception, the Teds Won, 7-O. The Lynx then fell, 32-22, with Bob Cornell legging 153 yards. The Scots were next to fall, 34-12. The defensive team proved to be one of the toughest in the city, holding the Eagles three times within the Ted's live yard line. The Boughs won this muddy game, 6-O. Hale was then ambushed, 33-18, as the Riders piled up 457 yards for a season high. Art Hall scored three touch- downs and broke the Metro rushing record by carry- ing the ball 261 yards. In the most thrilling game of the season, the Teds beat the Barns on the foot of Steve Coccia. A 66-yard pass play from Jim Currie to Hugh Klopfenstein spear-headed the Boughs' scoring. The Beavers then shot down the Teds in the upset of the year with a 12-7 victory. But the Boughs bounced back and defeated Sealth, 10-7, for the third Metro Champion- ship in four years under Coach Don Harney. The Iunior Varsity ended the season with a 2-3-1 win-loss-tied record, and the fourth place in the Northern Division. According to Leonard Thrapp, the coach, the Sophomore football team had a great deal of potential. The line was extremely lar e and the defense allowed only 44 points to Ee scored against them. Four opponents failed to cross the goal line. The squad started the year slowly, but gained momentum through the season. Along with the new sophomores, several seniors who had never participated joined the team. The team trained after school in Ravenna Park for short runs, for long jogs, the runners were given the chance to run wherever they chose. When asked how the team trained, Coach Snowden explained that there was no specific way. He emphasized that it was just all hard, hot work. ln this respect, cross country teams are in a group by themselves. The demands of turning out for a cross country team, staying on the team, and ulti- mately succeeding are far greater than those of any other sport. The squad this year was unique in that it worked harder, was more enthusiastic, and showed more team spirit than almost any previous team. Not only T was the home field marred by building con- struction and heavy equipment, but since there were only four returning lettermen, the majority of the players were juniors. The Teds recovered from a first-game, six-run shutout at the hands of Shoreline, by dumping Gar- Held, 4-0. Hale proved more difficult, gaining a 5-4 victory over the 'Riders' The team de- feated their next two opponents, lngraham, in a thirteen inning marathon, l-Og and Bal- lard, 3-0. Thieves won't hurt you, viewers of this year's Senior Play, Thieves' Carnival, discovered. The ro- mantic comedy, written for a modern setting by Jean Anouilh, was deliberately set back into the 1890's by director, Miss Norma Wills. It portrayed the attempt of the elderly Lady I-Iurf to amuse herself by enter- taining three pickpockets masquerading as ruined Spanish aristocrats. The result was that the youngest thief, Gustave, and Lady I-lurf's heiress niece, Juli- ette, fell in love. The performance, although simple in appear- ance, required precisioned timing due to live clarinet music accompanying entrances, exits, and scene changes. Also necessary was a combination of modern and stylized acting. Three separate sets, antique props, and elaborate costumes contributed to the intricacy of the over-all production, while the repeated use of masks and disguises demanded a polished performance on the part of the actors. l The Three Musketeers Manoevre is the classic routine for nurse- maids. The Music Committee chose the song and dance numbers while the Dance Committee was in charge of the choreography. The Technical Committee built all scenery and props, and the Costume Com- mittee provided the costumes for the cast. Revue orchestra members, chosen through auditions, produced all orches- tral music accompanying the Rhythm and Riot Revue. Student director Jerry Iensen coordinated their efforts. Editions of the Roosevelt News have looked the same for the last nine years. However, to begin the 1966-1967 school year, the RHS News staff chose a new format which gave the school newspaper a different appearance. The RI-IS News staff, composed of both newspaper and advertising staiis, worked under the direction of Mr. Peter Ryboclc and the editors for the fall and spring, Nancy Wilson and Zenaida des Aubris. The News staff, meeting during sixth period, and the advertising stali, during seventh pe- riod, planned the layouts and prepared the content for the publication of the Roosevelt News. Assisted by 1nter-High, a Nathan Hale Sentinel-Roosevelt News was published on October 28, 1966. The hope of stimulating a spirit of com- radship in an area neither athletic nor academic between the two schools, was expressed by the schools' editors. Two student-formulated publications, Laila Writer and La Dance Vie, were sold to the student body of Roosevelt during the spring of this year. Lab Writer, a collection of the better creative efforts of Roosevelt students, was unique in that distinguished contribu- tions were chosen by a selective board which met weekly throughout the year to read, discuss, and vote on manuscripts. All members, including Mrs. Sally Bryan, adviser, had an equal voice in the acceptance of all works. La Douce Vie, under the direction of two editors chosen by the students of Madame Sarah Vybornyls French classes, was prepared for publica- tion through the joint efforts of several committees, and was printed professionally this year for the lirst time. La Douce Vie provided a means of self-expres- sion while developing the student's familiarity with a foreign language, while the effort put into Lula Writer made it one of the best high school literary magazines in the state. The theme of the 1967 Strennons Life focused on the school itself as a unique and vital community. Several new changes were made in this year's annual including larger pictures, a different arrangement of the sections, and an addition of four more pages to the book. Staffers not only met third period each day, but also spent many hours before and after school working on the annual. The Strenuons Life Stalf combined pleasure with work to create a new boolc which reiiected the new challenges Roosevelt met this year. The Staff also faced a great loss. ln January, 1967, Karl Figley, Sports Editor, was critically injured in an automobile accident and remained in this condi- tion at the time of publication. Each individual felt the loss of Karl's wonderful personality and leader- ship.
