Girls Club strove to promote friendliness and good feeling among all girls, giving each the opportunity to contribute her ideas and efforts to the organization. During the year the Girls' Club sponsored many programs and extra-curricular activities. These were based on the theme Down the Trail Together. The first event was the fall sign-up, when all girls were able to join the committees of their choice. The Little Conference was held soon afterwards, and following that was the Father-Daughter Banquet. The theme of this event was Pardners : it was highlighted by a square dance after dinner. At Christmas time the Girls' Club helped sponsor the Holly-Berry Concert. Some of the girls publicized the event while others made refreshments and served as hostesses. A special program, the Careers Assembly, was presented for all girls. The speakers told of vocational opportunities for women in the Marines, the airline industry, and the field of medical technology. Early spring brought the second semester committee sign-ups. Each new committee was assigned a task in producing the second Little Conference with the theme of Pow Wow , The Girls' Club's year ended officially with the election and inauguration of new officers late in May. The Junior Varsity Team captured the North Division crown with a perfect season of five wins and no losses. This victory was heightened by the fact that Roosevelt's goal line was not crossed once in five games. The Hrst four games were easily won by the second team. ln the Hnal game with Shorecrest, the J. However, a determined effort by Roosevelt in the last seconds of the game caught a Shorecrest runner in the end zone for a two-point safety and another victory. In addition to setting up a volleyball team which played in tournaments at Lincoln and Ingraham, RHO Club also offered archery, apparatus, badminton, basketball, track, and tennis, For the first year, a coeducational class in individual apparatus was organized. The officers of RI-IO Club sold pom-poms, attended an all-city conference, and kept a record of attendance points for participants interested in earning letters. All activities were aimed at cultivating each girl's individual abilities. Another extra-curricular sport, skiing, was supported enthusiastically during winter months. Weekends found several Roosevelt students serving on the American Ski Patrol, over 150 Teds receiving PTA instruction, and numerous others in private classes or skiing on their own. Highlights of the second half of play were a one point victory over the Ballard Beavers and a resounding defeat of the previously unconquered Ingraham Rams. The Teds then met West Seattle of the Southern Division to vie for third place in the city and a berth in the State Tournament. The team overpowered the Indians and went to State. Under the new rules for the Tournament, the Roughriders played Cascade of Everett in the first round of the regional playoffs. With a good offense, the Teds passed Cascade in the second quarter and kept their lead to win the game. The next game matched the Teds with Ingraham. The season officially closed with the all-State meet, in which the Teds Hnished eighth. Roosevelt's ski team competed on a city-wide as well as a state-wide basis, The major competition was held at Stevens Pass on March 14. Teds, though hampered by injuries, placed second. Steve Doolittle President Brent Pelligrini Vice-President Jan Nordl u nd Secretary Susie Hagist ASR Seniors experience mixed emotions . . . The Class of '64 began its third year at Roosevelt with the announcement of its theme, Big Wheels On the Move. Chosen to supplement the ASR theme of On the Move, this theme represented the position of leadership and responsibility which the Seniors held in school affairs. Financing the events of graduation was a challenge, but the Seniors met the expenses with a number of projects. About forty-five dollars were raised from the sale of candy at the Senior Play. At Christmas, the Class offered students snap-shots of themselves with Santa Claus. RHS decals and plastic annual covers were also sold. As a service, the Class sponsored the sale of Roosevelt pins and graduation announcements. Seniors also participated in the planning of the Jr.-Sr. Dance and the Campus Day Dance. Preparation for the Hnal whirl of events began in November with a class decision on white graduation gowns for the girls. The graduation social calendar was led off by the traditional Senior Luncheon, followed, amidst a flurry of last-minute excitement, by the Senior Prom. The Prom was held in the Grand Ballroom of the Olympic Hotel. Commencement exercises, a confident step into the future, climaxed the Seniors' activities together. Reprcsenlaliue Bruce Dearborn Treasurer Miss Hardy Adviser Kay Wallace asks Randy Melquist's opinion before a class vote on the color of graduation gowns. Music, soft lights. and formal attire highlighted the Senior Prom, held in the Grand Ballroom of the Olympic Hotel. 'i ,, it A. Commencement marks the end of a Senior's high school career. Greg Burnside President Roger Stanard Vice-President Molly Dack Secretary Sue Crockett Juniors reach midstream . . Enthusiasm best described the '64 goal of Roosevelt Juniors. Through their spirited participation, the Juniors supported and Won many school activities. Victorious in Color Week, the Map Stock Sale, and the Canned Food Drive. they also had a higher percentage of student pass sales than the other classes. Junior spirit began with football, when they won the attendance record at the lngraham game. After printing signs for Homecoming Week, the class expressed their enthusiasm by giving a party for their Varsity Team. Meanwhile members of the class collaborated with Seniors to produce the combined class dance, ln the Midst of a Memory, presented at the Tennis Club on November 30. January brought basketball and more dancing. Juniors again demonstrated their spirit as in the fall by attending games Where they distributed rosters of their team players. The Junior Class supported an ASR dance in this same month. This event, Dollar Daze, helped to build Junior Class funds. In the last month came the election of ASR officers, Senior Committee Chairmen, and Senior Class officers. With this and the planning of Senior activities, the class of '65 enthusiastically looked forward to their last year at Roosevelt. The Sophomore officers led their class in a round of activities in which they were aided by their advisers Mrs. MacLane, first semester, and Mr. Stenfors, second semester. One of their major projects was starting a grounds clean-up program: here Sophomore roll rooms took turns devoting a roll period to picking up papers around the school. An exchange with Bellevue, in December. gave Sophomore officers a chance to visit another high school for a day. The Sophomore Class actively supported the varsity team by making signs and pin-on tags for pep assemblies. Rosters which they made were given out at the Queen Anne football game. The Sophomore team was not neglected either. Bulletin notices publicized Sophomore basketball games, and before Sophomore football games, cards were sent to opposing teams. The class gave a party for the team at the end of the football season to celebrate their winning the Northern Division Championship. The team enjoyed cupcakes and cookies while their coaches congratulated them on a Wonderful season. The Sophomore Class closed the year by presenting the PTA dance in April and looked ahead to the coming year with the election of new class officers. Students went to Portable 19 once a week for an hour of supervised reading. Teachers used this free period for correcting papers and holding conferences with students. Honors classes were available for Sophomores and Seniors while Juniors could substitute Lab Writing I or Journalism for Language Arts 1 lA. Additional courses were offered to students who desired to go beyond the required subjects. Aspiring thespians signed up for Speech Arts and Drama I-IV and Seniors interested in literature took Senior Reading. Language arts teachers supervised the production of the Annual, News, and Revue. Roosevelt students saw world events more clearly because of developments in the Social Studies Department. Reference libraries were enlarged while many classes received new and better texts. Teachers had fewer students to instruct during the day, making it possible for them to spend more time working with individuals. An experimental honors United States History class was conducted by Mr. Eggleston and Mr. Brink. When the class did not meet as a single unit for lectures in the auditorium, it was divided between the two teachers for separate sessions. Conventional honors classes were available as well to Sophomores and Juniors. As before, the department offered optional courses to interested students. Matching the rapid advancement of their field, the Science and Mathematics Departments enriched their programs with entirely new courses and teaching techniques. In addition to conventional mathematics courses, Roosevelt students took such classes as Probabilities and Statistics. Algebra and geometry texts compiled by the School Mathematics Study Group provided a new approach to understanding the fundamentals of mathematics. Two innovations appeared: a workshop or study library for math students where programmed material, film strips, and research books were available, and an electronic digital computer which was used during the spring semester. A Comparable developments appeared in the sciences. Botany, once offered as a separate subject, was included in the biology course. Many chemistry classes emphasized learning by experimentation rather than by lecture. Physics students used new study material prepared by the Physical Science Study Committee. The aim of the Foreign Language Department was not only to teach students the rudiments of the language but to have them learn about a foreign culture. With this goal in mind, French teachers invited Patrice Castelaine. Roosevelt's exchange student, to tell their classes of life in Marseilles. Latin and German students saw slides while Russian enthusiasts enjoyed Mr. Obrastoff's tapes. Spanish and French teachers purchased foreign novels for the enlightenment of advanced language students. Mrs. Vyborny's French IX and X scholars, led by Steve Gaddis. produced La Douce Vie. a magazine of French prose and poetry. Business education has two goals - vocational training for office occupations and general education stated Miss Lohren, head of the Business Education Department. Students who wished to make their careers in the business world worked for a Statement of Proficiency. After they had completed eight basic courses and specialized in clerical, retailing. bookkeeping, or secretarial Work, these fledgling clerks received their recommendations. The majority of students, however, merely took elementary courses to learn useful skills. iii' . 'tii g. Karla Alford and Marlea Moore become acquainted with business machines in Office Practice l. The Art Department offered a variety of courses. Classes such as painting and drawing taught basic techniques while commercial art encouraged practical application of these skills. The Music Department climaxed hours of preparation with their presentation of I-landel's Messiah at Christmas. During the year, both choral and orchestral classes were available. In addition, the department offered Music Survey. The lndustrial Arts Department supplied a wide selection of subjects from gas engines to architectural drawing. Through the Home Economics Department, students learned the fundamentals of sewing and cooking as well as studying family relations. After this semester of academic learning, Teds attempted to apply their knowledge in the physical education classes. The main goal of the gym teachers was to make their students become more physically fit. The girls' PE. classes offered a variety of activities, emphasizing those that would be useful after high school. Over in the new gym. the boys exerted themselves in calisthenics, rope skipping, obstacle courses, tumbling, track, volleyball, badminton, weight lifting and pingpong, Talented tumblers could take an advanced tumbling class at 7 : 40. X f finding meaning hrough knowledge A wise Greek once proclaimed in two words a profound precept for the man of his day - 'Know thyself. Much later an Englishman suggested that man properly should study mankind. But today men seem more interested in racing to the moon or in splitting the atom than in study and healing the growing ills of man as represented by our crime, corruption, divorce, suicide, and mental and moral breakdowns. No doubt we will always be fascinated by the study of our natural world and how to control it: but if in studying this we neglect to study how to control ourselves, our atomic world may end in holocaust. Part of the answer, as I see it, lies in getting our studies into better balance so that we may really know ourselves, Therefore, along with our science and technology, I suggest that we re-emphasize the humanities and the arts, and that more of us study the rich disciplines of ethics, politics, economics, philosophy, and religion. In self-knowledge gained through broad studies I believe we can meet the challenges of our day and ind the fulfillment we want from life. Qin? . This, then, is enough. The search contains its own object. In asking, participating, searching, Man wills meaning. Index Cir - H Acknowledgments.
